What to write in your Mother’s Day card to claim your spot as the favorite child

TwitterFacebook

Mother’s Day is this Sunday, and it’s time to show our appreciation for all the amazing moms out there. They pay for our stuff, they listen to us whine, and they put up with all of our shit longer than they really should.

Although it’s a day all about celebrating mom, for those of us with siblings, it’s also a day to prove we’re truly #1 with better gifts and cards. Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to show your mom you love her more than your brothers and sisters do, and to claim your spot as your mom’s favorite child.

The radical history of Mother’s Day you never knew about

TwitterFacebook

If you thought Mother’s Day started out as a ploy by greeting card companies to pocket your hard-earned money, you’re in for a big surprise.

Though the annual American holiday became a commercial affair years after its founding, it actually began in 1905 as a way to honor the legacy of activist Ann Reeves Jarvis.

In 1868, decades before her death, Jarvis organized a “Mothers’ Friendship Day” to help women from opposing sides of the Civil War talk to each other and find a path to reconciliation.

If that sounds like a timely approach to all that ails America today, you’re not alone. Organizers at the Women’s March thought so, too, and launched a Mother’s Day project called “Daring Discussions” in the spirit of bringing a divided country closer together.  Read more…

9 of the best British films you’ve never seen

TwitterFacebook

Fair warning: when I started this list I wasn’t planning to fill it solely with dark and depressing films, but that’s definitely what’s ended up happening.

SEE ALSO: ‘Broadchurch’ is the best British crime show you’re not watching

It might be that I’ve always been drawn to films with challenging subject matters, or it might be that British directors are just really damn good at making realistically gritty movies.

Either way, the nine films below aren’t always easy to watch. They are very good though and you totally should watch them — you just might need to be in the right mood. Read more…

Five-hundred twenty-five thousand six-hundred minutes, how do you measure a  — live musical television event?

SEE ALSO: Biggest problem with Fox’s live ‘Rocky Horror’: It’s not live

The latest live event for the small screen on Fox is the long-running Broadway musical Rent, Variety reported Friday.

You might know the musical, created by the deceased Jonathan Larson, for its earworm “Seasons of Love” (it’s the song that breaks down the number of minutes in a year, along with cups of coffee, sunsets, and most importantly, love). Or from its 2015 film adaption starring Rosario Dawson, Idina Menzel, Taye Diggs, and others from the original Broadway cast.  Read more…

Michelle Obama expertly blasts Trump without even mentioning his name

TwitterFacebook

Former first lady Michelle Obama was back on stage doing what she’s known to do: talking about childhood obesity and making Americans healthier. But this talk had some bite to it.

Naturally, the recent decision by Donald Trump’s administration to not push forward with federal rules to make school lunches healthier — something Obama championed for hard with her “Let’s Move” initiative during her eight years in the White House — was brought up.

Obama had some tough words at the Partnership for Healthier America Summit in Washington, D.C. Friday. Without mentioning Trump by name or singling out the U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue who announced his plan to “make school lunches great again” earlier this month, Obama made her very clear what she thought of the president and his administration’s move. Dude wrestles 16-foot python with his bare hands, because Florida

TwitterFacebook

When you think of Florida wildlife, you probably think of alligators. Well, the sunshine state also has 16-foot pythons creeping around, NBD.

While Florida is well, Florida, the invasion of Burmese pythons in the Everglades National Park is a huge problem. The snakes are not natural to the area. The National Parks Service believes they were introduced either accidentally or on purpose by pet owners. They can potentially destroy endangered plants and animals and mess with the “natural order of South Florida’s ecological communities.”

Because of that, the state pays hunters to capture and kill these animals, and snake hunter Dustin Crum caught a pregnant, 130-pound, 16-foot-10 python earlier this week with his bare hands.  Read more…

Trump wants aircraft carriers to stop using ‘the digital’

TwitterFacebook

The digital, it is bad.

President Donald Trump recently revealed he wants Navy aircraft carriers to go back to steam-powered catapult systems, according to a Time interview published on Thursday. And he insisted they would no longer be using “the digital.”

SEE ALSO: Trump’s Russian income is not being mocked at all. With few exceptions.

Aircraft carriers use what’s known as a catapult system to launch planes into the sky. They’ve long used steam power to do this, but USS Ford-class carriers will use electromagnetic power and computers, which Trump referred to as “digital” in the Time interview.  Read more…

7 movies to watch if your mother-daughter relationship isn’t all that

TwitterFacebook

Mother’s Day is great when your relationship with your mom is… also great. Is that everyone? No.

The waves of social media posts proudly proclaiming “my mom is my best friend!” can be heartwarming if you’re a Gilmore, but for a lot of people, they turn into guilty reminders of a relationship gone sour, either over time or from the beginning.

We picked out our favorite mother-daughter movies for those whose relationships range from Freaky Friday-complicated-but-working-with-it to Heavenly Creatures-style-mania. ‘Cause hey, if we’re gonna talk about moms, we’re gonna talk about all moms. Even the murdering ones.  Read more…

Lance Armstrong posts video of Lance Armstrong to prove Lance Armstrong isn’t dead

TwitterFacebook

Great news: Lance Armstrong is alive!

The former cyclist posted an Instagram video Friday to prove he is very much alive despite a very random internet report to the contrary.

In the video shared Friday, Armstrong is holding a smartphone showing the false article on a totally no-at-all-fake-looking site called fox-news24.com.

No one wants to name their baby Donald anymore

TwitterFacebook

For some reason — and we really can’t think why — no one wants to name their babies Donald anymore.

According to 2016 data from the U.S. Social Security Administration released Friday, the name “Donald” hit a new low and decreased in popularity quite dramatically.

Our president’s first name was ranked at just 443 in 2015 but last year it dropped 45 spots to an even more pathetic 488.

SEE ALSO: Dear Star Wars fans naming your sons Kylo: Why?

Anyone else catch that 45-point drop? Any connection to Trump being the 45th president? Anyway, The Donald and Donald Jr. can be somewhat reassured that the biggest decrease went to the male name “Jonael” with a 475-point drop. But still, the value of our president’s first name has dropped. He can’t say he has the best name. Read more…
