Land your dream job by upping your LinkedIn game

TwitterFacebook

The Complete LinkedIn Marketing and Sale Bundle will help you boost your LinkedIn presence, and it’s on sale for $34.

Applying to jobs can feel a lot like dating — awkward first meetings, overanalyzing every message you send (while waiting not-so-patiently for a response), and the crushing knowledge that even if it does work out, it probably won’t last forever. Fortunately, unlike dating, there are actual courses you can take to make the job application process a whole lot easier.

A recent survey suggested that nearly 85 percent of jobs out there are filled via networking — and in 2019, the name of the career networking game is LinkedIn. Of course, you really only reap the benefits of the platform if your profile is optimized. Growing your connections, collecting colleague endorsements and recommendations, and creating a résumé that stands out from even the most competitive of crowds are just the start. Read more…

Facebook Messenger’s role in child sexual abuse online raises troubling questions

TwitterFacebook

A Sunday report from the New York Times lays bare a chilling statistic regarding the role social media platforms can play in facilitating child sexual abuse and the spread of child pornography online.

Of the 18.4 million reports of child sexual abuse worldwide in 2018, a staggering 12 million trace back to Facebook Messenger. That’s according to “people familiar with the reports.” Although it’s only one facet of a much more widespread problem, the outsize role played by Messenger is hard to overlook.

Even more troubling is the fact that efforts in the tech space to protect users could only worsen the situation. Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg wrote at length back in March about the company’s plans to create a more secure platform, and it’s a process that includes encrypting private content on the site. ‘Untitled Goose Game’ has everyone living their best chaotic lives

TwitterFacebook

Being alive today can feel like an exercise in surviving constant chaos. Everything is happening all the time, and feeling overwhelmed by existence has become our generation’s unfortunate norm. In the best of all possible worlds, this is the point at which a hero emerges — an icon who encapsulates the lawless rage that simmers beneath the surface of the populace and whose actions release the tension felt by all in the face of increasingly dire circumstances.

Our hero has emerged. That hero is goose.

Untitled Goose Game was developed by Australian game studio House House and released on Nintendo Switch, MacOS, and PC Sept. 20, and even though the game’s runtime is relatively short, its horrible goose protagonist has captured the deliciously chaotic heart of the internet. For example: Read more…

Here’s Robert De Niro firing F-bombs at Fox News, live on CNN

TwitterFacebook

We can always count on Robert De Niro to drop some F-bombs on live television.

The actor appeared on CNN’s Reliable Sources Sunday morning to discuss backlash he’s received from Fox News for speaking out against Donald Trump. (In particular, the network took issue with his iconic “Fuck Trump” moment at the 2018 Tonys.)

De Niro did not seem particularly affected by the criticism. “Fuck ’em,” he said, referring to Fox News. “Fuck ’em.”

—@BrianStelter asks Robert De Niro about criticism he gets from Fox for speaking out against Trump.

“Fuck em,” De Niro replies. “Fuck em.”

Stelter reminds him, “This is cable, so it’s not an FCC violation, but it is still a Sunday morning.” pic.twitter.com/9IOo1VvXCM

‘Batwoman’ star Ruby Rose reveals she had emergency surgery after stunt injury

TwitterFacebook

Actress Ruby Rose revealed on Thursday that she underwent emergency surgery earlier in 2019 after a stunt injury left her at risk of paralysis.

The Batwoman star discussed her experience in an Instagram post, which also included a graphic video of the surgery itself. (We don’t recommend watching if you’re squeamish, but it is pretty metal.)

“To everyone asking about my new Pez dispenser scar on my neck… A couple of months ago I was told I needed an emergency surgery or I was risking becoming paralyzed… I had herniated two discs doing stunts, and they were close to severing my spinal chord [sic],” she wrote. Read more…

Elon Musk brought little news but lots of hype for the SpaceX Starship

TwitterFacebook

SpaceX’s much-heralded Starship reveal on Saturday night was undone somewhat by the fact that it’s hard to maintain secrecy with a 165-foot vehicle.

The Elon Musk-hosted evening presentation in Boca Chica, Texas gave viewers on the ground and watching from home via the livestream an update on the long-in-development spacecraft. The SpaceX Starship is a reusable vehicle capable of carrying both passengers and cargo beyond Earth’s orbit and out into our solar system.

Musk has described it as a “multiplanetary” transport that “will allow us to inhabit other worlds. Nevermind the fact that SpaceX hasn’t actually launched a crewed ship into space at this point, as NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine pointedly made clear in a statement on Friday. Read more…

John Legend and son Miles play piano together in extremely cute video

TwitterFacebook

OK, time for the cutest thing of the day.

On Saturday, Chrissy Teigen posted a video to Instagram in which John Legend and their one-year-old son, Miles, play “My Favorite Things” together on the piano. Well, John Legend is playing and singing, and Miles is doing some experimental improvising on the side. It is all extremely adorable.

Netflix teases ‘El Camino’ with another familiar face from ‘Breaking Bad’

TwitterFacebook

Old Joe is back.

The junkyard owner played by Larry Hankin who appeared on Breaking Bad a few times is apparently returning in El Camino. He’s still doing his thing at the junkyard when he receives a call from… someone. Probably Aaron Paul’s Jesse Pinkman? But this is Breaking Bad-adjacent. Don’t be surprised if even this brief moment defies expectations.

Like all the teasing looks Netflix has shared so far, this snippet of a scene raises more questions than it answers. We won’t be waiting much longer, thoughEl Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie comes to Netflix on Oct. 11. Read more…

‘SNL’ admits what we all knew, deep down: Apple picking sucks

TwitterFacebook

Saturday Night Live doesn’t always have great politics, but on one issue it is absolutely correct: Apple picking sucks.

Aidy Bryant and Kate McKinnon play sisters who run a pick-your-own apple farm. If you’ve ever been apple picking, you’ll know the kind they’re talking about: A very foggy place swarming with bees where every apple is already on the ground because — so sorry — you just missed peak picking season.

Host Woody Harrelson is particularly funny here as Hank, a farm employee who “came with the land.” Even if roasting apple farms isn’t your cup of tea, stay for the petting zoo segment. “We found some animals, and now they’re in prison,” Hank says, later embarking on a sad anecdote about donkey depression. Good stuff. Read more…

Watch ‘SNL’ Weekend Update tackle the Trump impeachment saga

TwitterFacebook

Saturday Night Live is back with quite a bit of ground to cover, including the ongoing saga of Donald Trump’s looming impeachment. On Weekend Update, Colin Jost talked about how it’s felt to watch it all go down — most notably, how Trump can make something as serious and world-altering as impeachment feel like a full-on rodeo. (Further driving home this point is a clip of Rudy Giuliani screaming on Fox News.)

“[Impeachment] should feel like a huge historic moment, but with Trump even impeachment just feels silly,” Jost said. “You know, like the movie Nixon was a serious film directed by Oliver Stone. The movie about Trump is gonna be from the dudes who brought you American Pie.” Read more…
