Ubisoft dog vs. Keanu Reeves is the E3 content we’ve been waiting for

TwitterFacebook

Yesterday, Microsoft gave us Keanu Reeves. Today, Ubisoft presents: dog.

The multi-day video game expo where hundreds of developers and publishers descend on downtown Los Angeles to market the hell out of their upcoming projects (aka “E3 2019”) hasn’t even officially begun, but already the battle for best publicity stunt is underway. And, as it turns out, Ubisoft is way in the lead.

At the developer’s annual press conference on Monday afternoon, Ubisoft creators announced new titles, shared never-before-seen in-game footage, and welcomed Jon Bernthal, star of Ghost Recon Breakpoint and former The Walking Dead actor, to the stage with (wait for it) A DOG. Read more…

Anton Yelchin documentary gets emotional first trailer

TwitterFacebook

Anton Yelchin was just 27 when he died due to a horrible accident at his L.A. home. Though he was known best as an actor, the trailer for the upcoming Love Antosha makes clear that he was much more, and that he left behind a rich body of work and legacy that still resonates deeply with those who knew him.

Love, Antosha, directed by Garret Price, premiered this winter at Sundance and traces Yelchin’s career, personal life, and all the in-between spaces where he thrived and explored art and identity. It includes interviews with Yelchin’s costars and colleagues from Hollywood, including Kristen Stewart, Bryce Dallas Howard, and the stars of J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot. The trailer also reveals heartbreaking footage of Yelchin’s mother Irina Korina Yelchin.  Read more…

Welcome to ‘Deep Bookstagram,’ where dark, book-based comedy thrives

TwitterFacebook

Instagram has always been a safe haven for book lovers, a place where people can show off their private libraries full of white oak bookshelves, novels organized by color, aloe plants, and inspirational coffee mugs.

But there’s a deeper, stranger, and far murkier part of book Instagram, known colloquially as “Bookstagram.” Here, you’ll find some of the platform’s more eccentric thematic offerings — a satirical dating profile account for a Southern Gothic writer, a page dedicated to bizarro horror fiction, and one that celebrates the weirdest ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s Young Adult (YA) fiction.

This is a level of Bookstagram that only the bravest — and the most bored — typically enter. I call it “Deep Bookstagram.” In many ways it’s the exact opposite of traditional Bookstagram, which usually comes with a cheery, gratingly cozy demeanor. Deep Bookstagram loves to make fun of the sunny nostalgia of traditional Bookstagram. Deep Bookstagram isn’t afraid to be weird.  Read more…

Uplay+ bundles Assassin’s Creed, Rainbow Six, and all of Ubisoft into one subscription

TwitterFacebook

Here’s Ubisoft’s pitch for a games subscription service: pay $15 a month, get absolutely everything.

The service, called Uplay+, will be a PC-only proposition (for now) when it launches on Sept. 3. Users will get immediate access to a library of more than 100 games — Ubisoft titles of the past and present — as well as all their attendant add-ons and downloadable content releases.

This isn’t a streaming service, though Uplay+ will be coming to Google Stadia in 2020, with more details to come on that later. It’s more like Xbox Game Pass or EA Origin Access in that there’s a library of “free” games that you can click on and install at your leisure. Read more…

‘Big Little Lies’ is back to make wife guys of us all

TwitterFacebook

Big Little Lies didn’t need a second season. But in the world of television high demand can make second seasons appear regardless, and it’s the lack of necessity that makes coming back to Big Little Lies so much fun.

Forget closure. Forget questions. The premiere of Big Little Lies Season 2 delivers on what’s really important about the show: spending time with our five wonderful wives.

The glamor and allure of the five women at the center of Big Little Lies was a massive part of Season 1’s appeal and that continues into Season 2. Their clothes, their houses, their over-the-top rich (mostly) white lady-ness — they all blend together in an effervescent fantasy of wanting to know them and be them. It’s the easiest thing in the world to become obsessed with these women, these wives, and worship them as icons they are.  Read more…

Keanu Reeves stole the show at Xbox’s E3 event

TwitterFacebook

Leave it to Keanu Reeves, one of the greatest human beings to ever grace this planet, to outshine every video game that Xbox showed off at E3 on Sunday.

It turns out that Reeves is in the highly anticipated game Cyberpunk 2077, which is being made by the same developer who gave us The Witcher series. And to help hype up the game and the news of its release date, Reeves himself came on stage to deliver the good word.

Someone from the audience clearly yelled out to him that he is breathtaking, which is objectively true, and he yelled back that they, in fact, are breathtaking. And then he elaborated that everyone is in fact breathtaking, including you and me. Read more…
