This Lenovo tablet doubles as a smart display, and right now it's on sale for less than $200

TL;DR: The award-winning Lenovo Smart Tab P10 is currently on sale on Amazon for less than $200. It keeps waffling between a couple of different prices, but the last time we checked, it was listed at $194.46 — that’s 44% off its usual retail price of $349.99.

Every once in blue moon, the Mashable Shopping team comes across a product on Amazon that gives us what can only be described as an acute case of “pricing whiplash.” First it’s on sale for amount A. It sells out minutes later, then comes back in stock at amount B when we refresh the page. Then it’s back at price A upon another refresh, etcetera, etcetera, rinse and repeat. Read more…

Baby Sonic sprints into our hearts in Japanese trailer for ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’

Baby Sonic sprints into our hearts in Japanese trailer for 'Sonic the Hedgehog'

Through the darkness of teeth, comes a beaming light — a light we shall call Baby Sonic.

On Thursday, Paramount Japan dropped a trailer and poster for the upcoming release of Sonic the Hedgehog. The brief clip, voiced entirely in Japanese, gives audiences their first glimpse at Sonic’s origin story, embodied by a little blue ball with a case of the zoomies.

Exiting a year that gave us too many cute creatures to count, Baby Sonic is making 2020 look even brighter. But we have questions. Will Baby Sonic have teeth? Will they be regular teeth or baby teeth? Does Baby Sonic need my teeth? Here, take these teeth.  Read more…

Conservationists are petitioning for an dugong emoji

Conservationists are petitioning for an dugong emoji

This November, Pig the dugong celebrated his 21st birthday at SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium. The birthday boy was presented with a bean sprout cake and new toy at a party thrown in his honor, complete with conical hats and party games.

Sadly, Pig couldn’t blow out any birthday candles, because he is a dugong. However, his carers did pass on a birthday wish: for humans to help conserve his native habitat and save his species.

The IUCN Red List categorizes dugongs as vulnerable, with a population on the decline. According to SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium’s dugong supervisor Kerrie McDonald, conservation campaigns are hampered by the simple fact that many people don’t know what dugongs are.  Read more…

Incredible photos capture ‘Ring of Fire’ in the final solar eclipse of 2019

Incredible photos capture 'Ring of Fire' in the final solar eclipse of 2019

Break out the Johnny Cash and your best paper sunglasses for the final solar eclipse of the year, and the decade.

An annular solar eclipse traveled over Indonesia and surrounding regions on Dec. 26, visible in areas stretching from Saudi Arabia to Guam.

The phenomenon is also known as a “ring of fire” eclipse — occurring when the moon doesn’t completely cover the sun’s disk, meaning that instead of a total blackout, the slightly smaller shadow is surrounded by a bright circle of light when it’s centered.

You can see the path of the moon’s shadow across Asia in the below tweet from NOAA:

A rare #Annular, or #RingOfFire, #SolarEclipse happened on Dec. 26, which lasted 3 min and 40 sec. It was visible from most of #Asia and the #MiddleEast. See the imagery of the #SolarEclipse2019, captured by #Japan’s #Himawari8 #satellite here: https://t.co/G8TFeh1dM2 pic.twitter.com/TtZZ2X717k

End of an era: 2020 brings Tesla’s federal tax credit to zero

End of an era: 2020 brings Tesla's federal tax credit to zero

You better hope that new Tesla electric car you ordered gets delivered by Dec. 31.

That’s because the last batch ever of Tesla electric vehicle buyers will receive a federal tax credit by the end of the year. Tesla is at the tail end of a government incentive program for all EVs sold to receive a $7,500 subsidy. For Tesla buyers now in December 2019, the subsidy is down to only $1,875. Tesla will be the first carmaker to deplete the federal program.

Once any automaker sells 200,000 units of electric, low-emission vehicles, the credit starts dwindling. Congress decided on that number back in 2009. Tesla —a company that only makes all-electric vehicles — was the first company to hit the threshold in 2018. Since July, the amount was down to just $1,875 in federal credits. On the last day of the year, that subsidy runs out completely. Read more…

Nearly every drone would be tracked under new FAA rule

Nearly every drone would be tracked under new FAA rule

A proposal to track nearly all remote-controlled drones went public Thursday.

This new rule from the Federal Aviation Administration would affect nearly all drones in the U.S., both recreational and commercial. The only exception are drones under .55 pounds, which don’t require FAA registration.

Most photography drones, like the DJI Mavic, weigh about a pound and would need to comply with the new regulations. (FYI, the Propel Star Wars Quadcopter is 6 pounds.)

Called “Remote ID,” the new system would make it easier to track the location of nearly every drone flying, and identify its registered operator. The new process would be similar to registration for airplanes. Drone manufacturers would have to start incorporating tracking tools into their devices. Read more…
