'Project Runway' got awkward after a contestant mentioned the Kushners

Project Runway, a show about designers competing to create innovative looks under challenging circumstances, rarely gets political. But when it does… ooh boy.

During the episode that aired on Thursday night, designers had to pull together an outfit for host Karlie Kloss to wear in Paris out of thrifted materials gathered from Goodwill. The challenge tasked contestants to design a look that’s “super cool,” “wearable,” and “chic.”

Contestant Tyler Neasloney’s conservative white blouse and black skirt ensemble didn’t hit the mark for judge Brandon Maxwell, who said, “I cannot see Karlie wearing it anywhere, honestly.” Read more…

Haunting photo shows navy ship evacuating Australians trapped by fires

The Australian Navy’s HMAS Choules can carry 32 tanks and up to 700 troops. It can also carry Australians fleeing from historic bushfires.

On Thursday night the Royal Australian Navy released photos documenting the evacuation of Australian citizens from the small coastal town of Mallacoota, in southeastern Australia. Mallacoota was surrounded by flames.

One particularly striking image shows the imposing HMAS Choules shrouded in a thick, smoky haze. The Navy got the request to evacuate Mallacoota’s residents and tourists just before the new year, and brought two big vessels.

“When the call came out in the late afternoon of New Year’s Eve, the ships’ companies gladly stepped up to the challenge, and both ships were underway less than 17 hours later,” Choules Commander Scott Houlihan said in a statement released by the Navy. Read more…

Doorbell camera records man confessing to murder, police say

Doorbell camera records man confessing to murder, police say

He walked outside with a bloody knife and said he killed his own sister — and a doorbell camera recorded the whole confession, police say.

Michael Egwuagu was arrested on Friday for allegedly stabbing his pregnant sister, Jennifer Chioma Ebichi, to death, according to the warrant from the sheriff’s office in Travis County, Texas. Police said they were able to corroborate a witness’ account thanks to footage captured by a doorbell camera.

Earlier that day, Ebichi contacted the witness, Linda Mura, and another family member, her twin brother, to come to the home where the 32-year-old was later found dead. The pregnant woman had warned that her brother, a 25-year-old former football player for the University of Texas at San Antonio, was in the midst of a crisis. Read more…

FDA bans Juul’s most popular pod flavor but leaves a loophole

FDA bans Juul's most popular pod flavor but leaves a loophole

High schoolers around the country just cried out in unified despair: Their precious mint pods are not long for this world.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday issued new guidelines meant to curb the youth vaping epidemic that, among other actions, will officially halt the sale of mint Juul pods. The rules, which go into effect in 30 days time, focus on cartridge-based e-cigarettes and follow Juul’s voluntary move to cease mint pod sales late last year.

A voluntary halt in sales, however, is a far cry from an FDA crackdown. The new enforcement priorities make it official: Mint-flavored pods are now history.  Read more…

It sure looks like Amazon is retaliating against employee activists now, too

“Just following policy” has to be the weakest of all weak sauce defenses. But sure enough, that’s what Amazon is claiming following the news that it’s disciplining employees who have organized for climate change activism within the company.

A new report from the Washington Post exposes how the company’s HR department has warned employees that they could face termination if they speak to the press about Amazon’s impact on climate change without seeking proper public relations approval.

The employees are members of a coalition called Amazon Employees for Climate Justice, which also released details of the alleged retaliation on Twitter. Read more…
