This burnt Christmas tree is a stark symbol of Australia’s devastating bushfires

This burnt Christmas tree is a stark symbol of Australia's devastating bushfires

Bushfires continue to devastate Australia, destroying homes, smothering cities in smoke, and killing people and wildlife alike. Temperatures in some parts of the country have exceeded 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) this week and are expected to climb above 50 (122 Fahrenheit), as part of a heatwave promising to further stoke the blaze. And it isn’t even three weeks into summer.

It’s a crisis, and not just a national one. These bushfires alone have have emitted 250 tons of carbon dioxide since August — nearly half of Australia’s overall emissions for the entirety of 2018.

As Christmas approaches, many Australians are understandably finding it difficult to find the joy of the season. Now, a new art installation in Sydney’s CBD is attempting to revive the holiday spirit despite the haze. Read more…

Instagram expands fact-checking worldwide, but it’s still ‘playing catch up’

Instagram expands fact-checking worldwide, but it's still 'playing catch up'

A full three years after Facebook began working with outside fact-checkers, Instagram is finally expanding its fact-checking operations to cover all of its users across the globe.

The photo-sharing app will now start fact-checking posts outside of the United States, the company announced. It’s a significant expansion of Instagram’s fact-checking program, which up until now has only partnered with third-party organizations within the U.S.

Instagram now works with 45 different fact-checking organizations around the world to identify false information within the app. Posts that have been debunked appear with “False Information” labels that obscure their content. The rules, however, are different for politicians: Instagram, much like Facebook, says it won’t fact-check “the original content of politicians.” Read more…

Lyft drivers have to complete safety training if they want to pick up passengers

Lyft drivers have to complete safety training if they want to pick up passengers

Lyft wasn’t joking about a mandatory “community safety education” course.

Any Lyft drivers that missed yesterday’s Dec. 15 deadline to complete an online 20-minute program that includes sexual misconduct training from anti-sexual violence group RAINN are blocked from driving on the Lyft ride-hailing app until they complete it.

The program pops up through the Lyft driver app, according to a Lyft driver who completed the course. It’s comprised of six short videos, expected to take about 20 minutes to view. The videos cover interactions with passengers, like avoiding certain questions and how to defuse a tense situation. One portion is devoted to reporting safety incidents and what behaviors aren’t allowed from passengers and drivers, with a focus on sexual misconduct. Read more…

This viral Twitter account wants you to stop chasing men who aren't worthy

“Let me tell u ladies about the beautiful feeling that is looking at someone u used to fantasize about, dream about, NEED, cry over, die for…and realize that he is ugly.

He is ugly, sis.

Look at his face. Look at it. It’s not…good. He’s ugly and u can laugh about it now.”

This is a popular tweet from @imdatfeminist, a Twitter account dedicated to help women get out of — or not fall into — toxic relationships. Instead it urges women to focus on themselves and their mental health. “Let me tell u ladies” is also the account owner’s personal favorite tweet thus far.

Here’s what it’s like flying on the ‘most expensive plane ticket in the world’

Here's what it's like flying on the 'most expensive plane ticket in the world'

YouTube’s resident “check out this expensive shit” dude, Casey Neistat, is once again doing PR for airlines out of the United Arab Emirates.

In a new video posted to his channel on Monday, Neistat takes his 11.6 million YouTube subscribers on a tour of The Residence on an Etihad A380, a ridiculously expensive and over-the-top private room on a plane.

The clip starts with Neistat briefly showing off his “seat” (which consists of 3 full rooms) before noting that Etihad gave him the ticket for free “which is awesome.” Before even taking off, he’s given noise-cancelling headphones, pajamas, the keys to the Wi-Fi, and of course a “loungewear robe.”  Read more…
