The internet is having a field day with Paul Ryan’s oblivious #GOPTaxScam tweet

TwitterFacebook

Paul Ryan is boasting on Twitter about all the good the G.O.P. tax plan will do. In related news, the House Majority Leader might not understand how money works for most people.

Ryan, tweeting from his personal account, earned himself a good, old-fashioned public shaming on Saturday after he tried to hype the recently passed tax bill. The extra $1.50 in one “pleasantly surprised” Pennsylvania woman’s weekly paycheck is enough to cover an annual Costco membership, he wrote.

The tweet was so astoundingly dumb that Ryan actually deleted it while we were in the process of writing about it. But let his original intent sink in for a minute. This was Ryan’s idea of a positive outcome for the new tax plan. Read more…

Uma Thurman opens up about her anger at Harvey Weinstein and Quentin Tarantino

TwitterFacebook

In November, actress Uma Thurman said she was waiting to speak out about sexual harassment and sexual assault until she felt less angry. That day has arrived.

Thurman finally told her story to The New York Times in a devastating account published Saturday. In it, Thurman alleges that Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein attacked her multiple times. Thurman also recounts several strange abuses of power on behalf of her Kill Bill director, Quentin Tarantino.

The actress says Weinstein’s incessant flattery, as well as the high position he held, made her miss what would otherwise be seen as key warning signs. She connects her former agency, Creative Artists Agency, with Weinstein’s predatory behavior. And she feels deep guilt for failing to protect all the other women who Weinstein assaulted after her: Read more…

Facebook deletes angry DC fanboy group trying to bring down ‘Black Panther’

TwitterFacebook

Dear bitter internet trolls who are pissed that Black Panther is already blowing every superhero movie out of the water: boy, bye.

That’s basically what Rotten Tomatoes and Facebook told a short-lived campaign to bring down the upcoming film’s audience score before anyone even saw the damn thing. After critics who attended early screenings of Black Panther raved about it on social media, a Facebook group titled “Down with Disney’s Treatment of Franchises and its Fanboys” cropped up.

It accrued roughly 4,000 angry fanboys — before promptly being shut the hell down.

The group claimed it was motivated by a now familiar and hilariously misinformed conspiracy theory: Touted by DC fans, it alleges that Disney somehow pays off nearly every critic from every major publication to trash DC movies.  Read more…

Uber, Lyft pledge to co-exist with public transit, but they’re still a big traffic problem

TwitterFacebook

Let’s call them transportation goals.

With 15 transportation companies, including ride-hailing apps Uber and Lyft, signing an ambitious list of “shared mobility principles” this week, these companies are promising to “prioritize people over vehicles.”

The pledge, also signed by bike-share companies and other ride-hailing apps like China’s Didi Chuxing and India’s Ola, is about making cities livable and sustainable, meaning less pollution, more zero-emission vehicles, more shared curb space, and aligned goals with city governments, transit agencies, and other vehicles.
