Kirstie Alley vs. U.S. curling squad is the Olympic argument we never expected

TwitterFacebook

Do not piss off Team USA’s men’s curling team — something Kirstie Alley is learning the hard way.

The actress tweeted an off-hand thought while watching the Winter Olympics on Monday, calling the sport of curling “boring.”

Im not trying to be mean but…… Curling is boring

— Kirstie Alley (@kirstiealley) February 20, 2018

Needless to say, the U.S. men’s curling team thought, yeah, it was mean. So, they fired back.

We’re not trying to be mean either but your movies weren’t exactly riveting theater Kirstie#justsaying #curling #rockit #TeamUSA https://t.co/8q9KtxvCPe

Facebook is seeking a tech journalist and a #content creator

TwitterFacebook

Facebook is looking to hire two editors, one focused on managing technology-related stories and the other working with the company’s Creative Shop for brand campaigns.

The recent job descriptions align with Facebook’s efforts to be more transparent and to provide meaningful interactions. The majority of stories about Facebook for the last year were and still are focused on its ongoing problem with fake news. In 2018, it appears Facebook wants more content on what the company does well from its own corporate blogs.

An Amazon HQ2 clue? Strange web traffic hints at interest in this one county

TwitterFacebook

The county board members of Arlington, Virginia might be doing a happy dance right about now, because it looks like Amazon is researching the shortlisted “Northern Virginia” area as a possible location for its second headquarters, HQ2.

Thanks to some seriously top-notch sleuthing from local news source ARLnow.com, the outlet figured out that one of its articles was receiving an unusually high amount of traffic from an internal page featured on Amazon.com — one that is not visible to the public.

The article Amazon employees were viewing? A December 2017 article about Arlington’s environmental building accolades. The piece, entitled “County Wins Top Environmental Award from U.S. Green Building Council,” received over 6,000 page views and 3,500 unique visitors who were referred from an Amazon web page that cannot be reached normal public. The page is presumably only available to Amazon employees through an intranet. Read more…

Volcano in Indonesia unleashes massive explosion

TwitterFacebook

Mount Sinabung in Indonesia has been erupting for about the past five years now, displacing tens of thousands as it sends debris flows toward populated areas. On Feb. 19, the volcano unleashed a far more explosive eruption that vaulted smoke and ash more than 25,000 feet into the air, prompting aviation alerts for aircraft to steer clear of the area.

The eruption, which occurred on the island of North Sumatra, was caught on video by residents of Berestagi, which is about 15 miles to the west of the mountain, as well as residents of towns further away. Areas under the ash cloud saw the sky turn from day into night, while a layer of volcanic dust fell onto the ground. Read more…

This Silicon Valley skier just gave the least impressive performance of the Winter Olympics

TwitterFacebook

The Winter Olympics have been full of mind-blowing feats of athleticism and artistry.

This is not one of them.

Elizabeth Swaney made her Olympic debut in the freeski halfpipe on Monday. It was … not impressive. She casually slides back and forth down the halfpipe, like she’s on vacation in Aspen instead of competing against elite athletes. She barely even attempts a trick.

After the Parkland shooting, the gun control debate isn’t fading away

TwitterFacebook

Three of the largest mass shootings in modern American history happened in the past two years, but that doesn’t mean Americans are always thinking about gun control.

In fact, data shows that with so many mass shootings taking place, Americans move on to other concerns within several days after each event. But after the Feb. 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida killed 17 people, something different is going on.

The credit may belong to the power of high schoolers to capture national attention in the absence of leadership from high-level officials.
