5 negotiating tips girls can learn for a brighter future

TwitterFacebook

Girls facing tough situations can feel powerless, and it’s easy to understand why. They’re young and likely just beginning to find their voice. What’s more,  they may feel like they’re at the will of the people around them.

Enter: negotiation. Being able to negotiate can make all the difference for girls, both now and in the future. If they can learn to leverage these skills at a young age, it’ll start to feel more natural as they grow older.

“Whether girls are fighting to be in the classroom or the board room, to make informed choices about their futures, they need to be able to negotiate and effectively communicate,” said Dr. Geetha Murali, CEO of the non-profit Room to Read. Read more…

E-scooters get thumbs-up to scoot on most NYC streets

TwitterFacebook

Love ’em or hate ’em, electric scooters are now allowed in New York — which means the two-wheeled vehicles could soon be scooting through New York City.

The New York State Senate passed a bill Wednesday to pull back restrictions for electric-assisted bicycles and e-scooters. Scooter-share companies like Bird, Lime, Spin, Uber, Lyft, and many others haven’t been able to operate in New York City and other parts of the state, while the scooter craze has run rampant for the past year (and longer) throughout the country and abroad.

British channel ITV now requires women writers for all comedy programs

TwitterFacebook

One British TV channel has taken a step towards eliminating the standing trend of all-male comedy writers’ rooms by outright requiring women writers on all submitted projects.

ITV Comedy Controller Saskia Schuster announced the policy change at the Channel 4 Diverse Festival, an event dedicated to improving representation in TV and film, as an extension of her recently founded Comedy 50:50 initiative.

Schuster created Comedy 50:50 in response to the lack of women writers on the shows she’s previously produced for ITV and in the industry overall. The tenets of her initiative, which extend to ITV’s new contract process, require creators to have or prove an earnest effort towards creating a 50/50 gender balance in their writers’ rooms. In addition to that contractual requirement, Comedy 50:50 hosts a database of women writers who have at least one writing credit or an agent, for producers to peruse and discover underrepresented talent.  Read more…

Enthusiastic first reactions to ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ hit the web

TwitterFacebook

Spider-Man: Far From Home doesn’t hit theaters for another two weeks, but early reactions from critics promise we’re in for a web-slingin’ good time.

Marvel’s second standalone Spidey film and the final chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Three, Far From Home chronicles Peter Parker’s first heroic venture following the death of his beloved mentor Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame.

Tom Holland and Zendaya return as Peter and MJ, alongside MCU newcomer Jake Gyllenhaal as comic book character Mysterio.

Of course, no Marvel movie is complete without the appearance of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Nick Fury and Maria Hill, played by Samuel L. Jackson and Cobie Smulders. As an added bonus, Jon Favreau will reprise his role as Happy Hogan.  Read more…

‘Where is the CEO?’ Google’s founder skips shareholder meeting amid protests

TwitterFacebook

Alphabet’s annual shareholder meeting concluded with predictable results: every shareholder proposal was voted down despite protesting workers and increasingly pointed criticism.

At Google parent company Alphabet’s annual meeting Wednesday, shareholders advocated for a number of proposals meant to address numerous issues at the company, from sexual harassment and diversity, to the company’s policies regarding China and forced arbitration. As with Facebook’s recent shareholder meeting, there was also a proposal to limit Alphabet’s power by breaking up the company.

And, as with Facebook, these shareholder proposals had no chance of passing since Google’s two founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, control a majority of the most powerful shares. Read more…

How lightsticks became a must-have item for K-pop fans

TwitterFacebook

The flicker of tiny lighter flames once illuminated dimmed concert arenas during heart-wrenching numbers. Then it was phone flashlights waving brightly for all to see. But now K-pop fandoms have invented something much more high-tech to demonstrate their love for their idols: lightsticks.

These bright, beautiful lights are an essential part of any K-Pop concert-going experience. But why would fans pay top dollar for a glorified glow stick they’ll only use once in a blue moon?

To be honest, I didn’t quite understand it, being relatively new to the K-Pop wave myself. Until I saw BTS’ “Love Yourself: Speak Yourself” tour earlier this year. For the first time, I got to experience up close and personal an extraordinary phenomenon — what fans call “the ocean.” A sea of concert attendees, switching their lights on in the dark, bathing the arena in a blanket of color and light. Magical. Mesmerizing. Memorable.  Read more…
