It’s official: ‘Our Flag Means Death’ will set sail for Season 2

Our Flag Means Death fans, it’s official: We’re getting a season 2!

HBO Max renewed the David Jenkins-created pirate comedy on June 1, several months after Season 1 wrapped with a crushing finale that separated Gentleman Pirate Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) from Blackbeard (Taika Waititi). If we hadn’t gotten a Season 2, there would have been riots. Riots, I say!

Our Flag Means Death became a hit during its 10-episode run this past March and April, gaining attention for its offbeat humor and excellent portrayal of queer relationships. Fans clamored for a renewal announcement for months — if you ever saw some version of #renewOFMD trending, now you know why.

There was never any doubt in my mind that Our Flag Means Death would be renewed for a Season 2. It was a critically acclaimed hit with a passionate fanbase, what else could a streaming service want? Well, it looks like HBO Max wanted to wait until the first day of Pride Month to announce the renewal of its queer pirate show. I mean sure, they’ve had months to announce a Season 2, but rainbow capitalism’s gonna rainbow capitalism.

Annoyance over the delayed announcement aside, I’m extremely excited to see where Jenkins and his team take the story. Bring on Season 2 and bring back Blackbonnet!
