Watch the revamped Samsung Galaxy Fold buckle in a new stress test

TwitterFacebook

*Cringe*

Samsung has decided to offer up its re-tooled, supposedly more durable Galaxy Fold to durability reviewers, and the results are not pretty.

After a disastrous and embarrassing initial launch this spring, Samsung has finally debuted its redesigned foldable phone in Korea, parts of Europe, and Singapore (it should be coming to the U.S. soon)Mashable found that it certainly seems sturdier than it did before, but that impression from a few minutes of inspection at Berlin’s IFA trade show is no substitute for seeing how it performs after prolonged use, and under pressure.

YouTuber JerryRigEverything performed a durability test on the phone, and the Fold did not fare well. At the 6-minute mark, we get a lot more action videos of how the gears work. But soon, after subjecting the phone to durability tests, the screen loses an entire line of pixels and touch screen functionality.  Read more…

Happy 25th birthday, ‘Friends’! Here are 9 of the most iconic episodes of all time

TwitterFacebook

Friends is having a moment.

Thanks to the ability to endlessly stream its 236 episodes on Netflix (but in 2020, on HBO Max), and, perhaps, its female cast members’ mastery of the Tiny Shirt, Big Pants lewk, sitcom lovers are re-living, or discovering for the first time, the physical comedy, sweetness, and (often problematic) humor of Friends.

That’s fitting considering Sept. 22, 2019 marks the 25th anniversary of Friends‘ 1994 premiere. The world watched that day as Rachel Green waltzed into Central Perk in her sopping wedding dress, and the world (and Ross) would never be the same.

Mashable has combed through the archive to find some of the most iconic and re-watchable episodes of the series. A lot of these episodes center on the sticky catchphrases the show gave us; others mark the sentimental moments where we laughed and cried for the Friends. Read more…

Why José Andrés wants to feed people impacted by natural disasters

TwitterFacebook

José Andrés is on a mission. When natural disasters strike, the chef works to get people the meals they need.

“When people are hungry, we want to feed them,” said Andrés, speaking at the 10th annual Social Good Summit on Sept. 22. “So we make only the right decisions to make sure everybody is fed. Not a week from now, not a month from now, but right now.”

When Hurricane Dorian wreaked havoc on the Bahamas earlier this month, Andrés and volunteers from his nonprofit were on the ground cooking food for the people who were most effected. “We began doing what we do best: adapting,” Andres said on the Summit stage, speaking alongside atmospheric scientist Kait Parker and Dr. Maria Neira, director of public health, environment, and social determinants of health at the World Health Organization. Disney almost bought Twitter in 2017, but Bob Iger saw too much risk

TwitterFacebook

What would Disney’s Twitter look like in 2019? Would it be a happier, more welcoming place? Would the Nazis still have a platform? Would Donald Trump?

There’s no answer for these questions, but it’s noteworthy to learn that such a twist of fate almost came to pass. In Robert Iger’s upcoming book, “The Ride of a Lifetime,” the Disney CEO talks about how his company almost acquired Twitter in 2017 but ultimately stayed away.

“The troubles were greater than I wanted to take on, greater than I thought it was responsible for us to take on,” Iger said of the acquisition-that-almost-was in a New York Times profile on Sunday. Read more…

Halloween candy battle royale fight is splitting Twitter apart

TwitterFacebook

Move over, partisan political feuds, because there’s a new debate lighting up Twitter: which Halloween candy is the worst?

It started thanks to Liz Dueweke, news anchor for Seattle’s Fox Q13, when she shared the below tweet asking Twitter which of six popular Halloween treats “has to go. Forever.” The options: Snickers, Reese’s cups, Milky Way, KitKat, M&Ms, and Twix.

One has to go. Forever. Which one do you choose? pic.twitter.com/IBFF1nuvr0

— Liz Dueweke ? (@LizDueweke) September 21, 2019

For her part, Dueweke said she’d ditch Milky Way which is a perfectly fine answer.

An important caveat, though: this question excludes terrible candy like Almond Joy, Mounds, or Three Musketeers.  Read more…

NASA scientist Kate Marvel lays out the unpleasant realities of rising seas

TwitterFacebook

NASA data shows the ocean’s gradual, inexorable rise.

“There’s a lot of things we’re really sure about,” NASA climate scientist Kate Marvel said at the 10th annual Social Good Summit on Sept. 22.

“We’re sure sea levels are rising,” emphasized Marvel, a researcher at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies.

Scientists are also sure that greenhouse gases — notably carbon dioxide — are trapping heat on the planet, downpours are getting more intense, and rising temperatures are driving increasingly extreme Western wildfires.

Yet sea level rise (often) isn’t as conspicuous as Earth’s dying glaciers, historic droughts, and plumes of smoke from escalating wildfires. When we peer down into the water sloshing against a harbor’s walls, the ever-shifting tides might obscure the sea’s creeping rise. Still, as the planet’s relentlessly warming oceans expand and great ice sheets melt into the seas, the saltwater incessantly rises.  Read more…

Jonathan Safran Foer challenges everyone to fly less to fight climate change

TwitterFacebook

Social Good Summit on Sept. 22.

This year’s Summit focused on discussing solutions to climate change, and Foer shared his own plan to fight climate change on an individual level.

“My plan — eat vegan for breakfast and lunch, vegetarian for dinner, don’t fly for leisure in 2020, three cab rides a week maximum,” Foer said.

He also gave out his personal email address and invited the audience to send him more suggestions.

For years, I kept telling myself, “Someone has to do something.”
