The days of detox teas and lip filler posts overrunning your Instagram may be numbered.

Facebook announced Wednesday (via The Guardian) that it is changing its policy around posts that peddle diet products and monetarily promote cosmetic surgery.

It will age-gate content that sells these products, making them invisible to anyone under 18. It will also outright ban posts that make “miraculous claims” about diet products with links or codes to buy.

But as with any new content policy, the devil is in the details. Facebook is drawing the (albeit fuzzy) line for the policy around posts that are clearly meant to generate sales of the product. How egregiously promotional a post has to be to fall under the policy is not yet clear, meaning the products and services could still have a strong presence on the platforms, if they’re careful about wording. Because when explaining massive layoffs to your employees, there’s nothing like a performance by legendary hip-hop artist Darryl McDaniels of Run-DMC to make it all go down easier. 

So appeared to be the thinking of WeWork (since rebranded as The We Company) co-founder Adam Neumann who, at a 2016 all-hands meeting justifying the decision to layoff 7 percent of the company’s workforce in an effort to cut costs, brought out DMC to play a set for those lucky enough to still be employed by the newly penny-pinching business. And yes, the tequila shots flowed. 

So reports the Wall Street Journal in what is, frankly, a bonkers recounting of the co-founder’s escapades over the past few years.  Read more…

Facebook has expanded its definition of terror organizations as it’s being pressured to respond to the growing threat of white supremacist “lone wolf” shooters, like the one who carried out the mass shooting in Christchurch, New Zealand.

“While our previous definition focused on acts of violence intended to achieve a political or ideological aim, our new definition more clearly delineates that attempts at violence, particularly when directed toward civilians with the intent to coerce and intimidate, also qualify,” Facebook stated in a blog post Tuesday. 

The Christchurch shooting, which was livestreamed on the platform, “strongly influenced” Facebook’s policy update, the company says, calling it a “terrorist attack.”  Read more…

Southwest Airlines joined most of its competitors when it stopped handing out peanuts on its flights in 2018, citing allergy concerns. But people really miss the nuts, we guess, so the airline is releasing a line of peanut-related products.

The merch is available on Southwest’s online shop, the Southwest Store, which should be familiar to all the die-hard Southwest fans out there. (If anyone is a Southwest fan, please DM me.) A super secret Facebook project is reportedly in the works.

CNBC reported Tuesday that Facebook has been working on smart glasses, meant to eventually replace smartphones. 

Apparently, it has also just entered into a partnership with Ray-Ban parent company Luxottica, presumably to make them “cool” “frames” people might actually want to wear (sorry, Google Glass). 

Google Glass actually also worked with Luxottica to up their fashion game, so, no guarantees on aesthetics there.

According to CNBC, the AR glasses are codenamed Orion. They would feature a graphic display users could see out of the corners of their eyes, and wearers could make calls, livestream their positions, and more with Facebook-powered AI.  Read more…
