T’Challa’s ‘What If…?’ episode proves he was the best hero the MCU could have

He might be Star-Lord now, but he's still looks great in purple.

In just two episodes, What if…? on Disney+ has proved its worth as a beautiful reexamination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Episode 1 emphasized the heroic capabilities of Peggy Carter and Steve Rogers in a world where Peggy has the super soldier serum and Steve becomes a proto–Iron Man, but it was Episode 2 that showed what the heart of a hero truly looks like and how strong it beat in the chest of T’Challa as embodied by the late Chadwick Boseman.

Episode 2 asks the question “What If…T’Challa became a Star-Lord?” and quickly sets up a premise in which Yondu and the Ravagers accidentally kidnap the prince of Wakanda instead of Peter Quill. Just like in Peter’s story, Yondu raises T’Challa to become an outlaw called Star-Lord, but that’s where the similarities end. Peter Quill’s Star-Lord is obscure and kind of a jerk at the beginning of Guardians of the Galaxy, but T’Challa’s Star-Lord is famous and beloved for his dedication to improving the lives of the galaxy’s inhabitants. He’s surrounded by a familiar cast of characters — Yondu, Nebula, even Thanos — and T’Challa’s stunning impact on them is where his innate heroism becomes undeniable.

SEE ALSO:

Marvel’s ‘What If…?’ is like a love letter to every MCU fan theory

None of the main players in Episode 2 are fundamentally different than they are in the MCU canon. Yondu is still an adoptive father who lies to his son for fear of losing him. Thanos is still a mad titan who single-mindedly pursues balance. Nebula is tricky, sarcastic, and has a contentious relationship with her father. Their circumstances may have changed, but even without their trademark baggage (Yondu’s entanglement with Ego, Thanos’ lust for the Infinity Stones, Nebula’s torture and disfigurement) they are recognizably themselves. The fact that they act differently, and arguably more morally, is due to the influence of T’Challa in their lives.

T’Challa, like the rest of the characters, is fundamentally himself in space. He is a leader, a hero who longs to help people beyond the borders of his home, and his goodness is so profoundly affecting that it changes the course of history. Seeing what T’Challa is capable of, up to and including reasoning with Thanos, which indirectly saves Drax’s family, prevents countless genocides, preserves Nebula’s bodily autonomy, and negates the entire Infinity Saga with a single conversation, is confirmation that he is the best of what any planet in the galaxy has to offer. That is the caliber of hero the MCU has lost, and who no one could possibly replace.

Many great actors’ final performances are imbued with retroactive meaning, reading differently as the audience projects a changed significance on their last appearance. The late Chadwick Boseman’s performance in What If…? is not one of those. His last time voicing T’Challa doesn’t need retroactive meaning because everything noble and significant about his character is present from the moment you hear Boseman’s voice. Both Boseman and T’Challa were heroes without equal in their realities, and What If…? gives those heroes a sendoff that more than demonstrates their impact.

Walmart has the best price (by far) on this early 2020 MacBook Air

SAVE $299.01: The gold MacBook Air (early 2020) with a 1.1GHz Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM, and 256GB of storage is on sale at Walmart for just $799.99 as of Aug. 19 — that’s 27% off its $1,099 MSRP.

The best place to buy Apple gear this fall continues to be *checks notes* not the Apple Store.

As of Aug. 19, you could snag an early 2020 MacBook Air with 256GB of storage, a 10th-gen Intel Core i5 processor, and a gold finish on sale at Walmart for just $799.99, or 27% off its $1,099 MSRP. That’s a whole $100 cheaper than the latest MacBook Air’s base model, even when you factor in Apple’s special Education Pricing.

For comparison’s sake, this exact configuration has been priced at $899.99 on Amazon since late July, per data on the price-tracking site camelcamelcamel — and even before then, it’s only gotten as low as $893.92. Meanwhile, Best Buy’s inventory of the silver version has completely sold out at full price. (Amateur hour!)

Our definitive breakdown of the best laptops out right now

You’re probably wondering: What am I missing out on by opting for this MacBook Air instead of the slightly newer one with Apple’s M1 silicon? The answer is a resounding “not much,” aside from a fanless design and a slightly longer battery life: There’s a Touch ID button, a bright 13.3-inch Retina display with True Tone for natural-looking onscreen hues, and a whisper-quiet Magic Keyboard — no terrible butterfly switches to see here, thank thee lord.

The specific variant that’s on sale at Walmart comes with 8GB of RAM a 1.1GHz quad-core i5 processor with Turbo Boost up to 3.5GHz, which is plenty of power for apps and multitasking, says Mashable tech reporter Brenda Stolyar. (You can read her full review of the machine here, if you feel so inclined.) In short, it’ll make a stellar study buddy for the upcoming school year or a worthy upgrade from any previous MacBook Air models.

How to make a TikTok

Making a TikTok is easy, anyone can do it!

There are so many different kinds of videos posted on TikTok — from dance videos to Booktok — and it can be challenging to figure out how to recreate TikTok trends. While there are many moving parts when making a TikTok video, they are all made in the same way. Our guide walks through the basics of making a TikTok from hands free recording to adding a sound.

Follow the steps below to make your very first TikTok!

How to make a TikTok:

1. Open TikTok

2. Tap the plus sign on the bottom center of your screen

2. Add sound

You can add a sound by tapping the “Add sound” icon on the top center of your screen. From there you use the search bar to search for the sound you want or you can choose from your favorite sounds. When you tap a sound it will play, so you can make sure it’s the sound you were looking for. To confirm it is the sound you want to use, tap the pink checkmark next to it.

Tap add sound to access TikTok sounds.

Alternatively if you are watching a TikTok and you want to make a TikTok using that sound, tap the name of the sound on the bottom of the screen. Then click the pink oval at the bottom of the screen that says “Use this sound.”

When you select a sound and go to record your video, chances are the part of the sound you want to make a video to isn’t what initially plays. To avoid this, before you record your TikTok edit what part of the sound plays through by trimming it. To trim a sound select the music note icon, this icon will only show up once you have selected a sound.

Best sex toys for women: Take pleasure into your own hands

BEST DEALS ON SEX TOYS:

  • Sona 2 and Gigi Cruise bundle — $169 (save $93.90)

  • Womanizer Pro 40 Clitoral Vibrator — $99 (save $24.25)

  • Sona 2 Cruise — $125.10 (save $13.90)

If Instagram is to be believed, then self care for women basically amounts to face masks and daily affirmation apps.

Hot take: Sex toys are the ultimate self-care purchase.

Orgasms release oxytocin, the anti-stress hormone that gets you warm and fuzzy when cuddling, while dopamine, a neurotransmitter that regulates sleep, also makes an appearance. It stands to reason, then, that “I need to get laid” is a thing that actually makes sense to say when you’re having a rough week.

SEE ALSO: Best vibrators (the good, the great, the orgasmic)

Sex toys allow you to give yourself that needed boost whenever you damn well please, and it’s empowering to not have to rely on someone else (though toys are great for spicing things up with a partner, too). Getting to know your body is also key in developing a positive relationship with yourself — the most important relationship you’ll ever have.

Not all sex toys are made equally: Your favorite could be an oral sex simulator or clitoral stimulation via sonic waves, or maybe the Game of Moans dildo sword is what makes winter come. Whatever your preference, there’s so much more available to you than those $10 vibrators at Spencer’s in the mall.

Note: For the purpose of this article, we are looking primarily at toys that are intended for use by people who are assigned female at birth, which means they are recommended with the same enthusiasm for anyone with a vagina regardless of gender identity.

‘Twelve Minutes’ is the Hitchcock game I’ve always wanted to play

This is the end you'll try — and fail — to avoid, again and again.

Lies.

The first time I loaded up Twelve Minutes and pushed past the intro screen, I watched as the letters spelling out the title slowly faded from view until only four were left: L-I-E-S. It was a warning, and a sneak preview. Twelve Minutes is not to be trusted.

The new interactive thriller conceived by Luis Antonio, a Rockstar Games and Ubisoft veteran, and published by Annapurna Interactive hides many secrets. It’s a dark, sometimes torturous, and yet strangely compelling dive down the rabbit hole of lies: Both the ones we wield against others and the ones we tell ourselves.

No one in this brief, character-focused story gets to have a name, but they all come packing deeply layered identities. As players, it’s our job to tug at the corners of those identities by unearthing snippets of information and then using that knowledge to delve deeper into the central mystery of why a happy couple’s joyous evening would be violently interrupted by a murderous cop and his obsession with a pocket watch.

The quirk to all of this is right there in the title. Twelve Minutes is a reference to the game’s core time loop, in which a husband walks into his apartment after work and a series of inescapable events play out. Your wife is always there, waiting to share a special dessert and some happy news. That cop is always going to show up about five minutes later, shattering what should have been an idyllic evening.

And without your influence, the scenario is always going to end the same way: Wife and husband facedown on the floor, hands ziptied behind them, while an angry cop gets to the business of murdering them. We watch all of it unfold, every time, from a bird’s eye view that gives us a fully detailed view of each of the apartment’s three rooms while leaving faces obscured.

The influence you can have on how a loop plays out is forever limited by what you know. You use the mouse cursor to move, converse, and investigate points of interests in the apartment. Your clicks equate to a growing understanding of what’s really going on. The loop always resets in the end, but the idea is for you to step into each one armed with new information that you can use to suss out even more details.

‘Twelve Minutes’ is not to be trusted.

Conversations with your wife and the cop unearth family histories and unseen secrets. The clutter and build-up of a lived life scattered all around the apartment opens the way to clues. You’re meant to poke and prod everything, and find as much useful information in the environment as you do in dialogue.

Twelve Minutes doesn’t hold your hand or guide you along in any way, beyond some basic control explanations right up front. This is a game of observation and experimentation. If you spot a phone number somewhere, you can call it. If you find out a new detail in your wife’s personal history, you may find you can probe her more directly in future loops thanks to the added context.

It’s a thought-provoking and suspenseful kind of fun that wears its influences proudly. The floor tiling outside the apartment — which you get a clear look at only once, the first time you start the game — is an obvious intentional homage to the Overlook Hotel carpet in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. The single-apartment setting summons up memories of Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope, and the fixed overhead perspective is a similarly Hitchcockian flourish.

This is a thriller that’s studied at the feet of masters. When Twelve Minutes greets us for the first time with a Shining nod, it’s forecasting the dark journey that awaits. The bird’s eye view that persists all throughout creates a sense of distance between player and scene, which serves as a constant reminder that the control we may think we have is an illusion. There’s another puppet-master at work here.

We’re never allowed to get close to the characters because this is their story. There’s no identifying with the protagonist, and there’s not even a protagonist at all, really. Our understanding of what’s going on at any given moment hinges almost entirely on the voice performances of James McAvoy and Daisy Ridley, as the husband and wife, respectively, and also Willem Dafoe, who brings his gravelly menace to the cop.

Antonio’s tightly designed house of cards always depends on players picking up on clues. Twelve Minutes does a great job overall of making key bits of information accessible without it being obvious, so long as you approach things with an investigative mindset. But as often happens with games like this — an adventure game, make no mistake — it’s easy for players to get tripped up when they form ideas about how things work that run counter to the developer’s intent.

I got hopelessly stuck at one point not because I didn’t know where to find the next tranche of clues, but rather because I misunderstood the mechanical requirement tied to moving the next phase of the plot forward. It was only after a spoiler-free email exchange with Antonio — mostly to ensure I hadn’t hit some game-breaking bug — that I realized what was going on.

Prepare to spend lots of time visiting this bathroom.

Prepare to spend lots of time visiting this bathroom.
Credit: luis antonio

With games like Twelve Minutes, these are often the moments where players will either turn to a guide for help or simply walk away to re-examine the problem later with fresh eyes. The point, though, is it’s not a completely smooth experience. I enjoyed my time with Twelve Minutes, but it doesn’t always communicate the rules as clearly as it could.

That’s certainly by design to some extent. The suspenseful core of this story works because of how opaque the rules are. There’s just a fine line to walk with an approach like that, and just on the other side of that line lies needless frustration.

The overall pace of Twelve Minutes also starts to weigh a little heavy as you reach the end stages of uncovering its mystery. Time loop games (think Outer Wilds) depend on some amount of repetition, and that’s definitely true here. It was smooth and nonintrusive during most of my six-hour playthrough. But there’s a final stretch of Twelve Minutes where you can easily piece together a big piece of the mystery yourself, and it makes finding the specific set of steps the game wants you to follow to get there a chore.

Problems like these feel unavoidable given the premise and structure of Twelve Minutes. And while they definitely led to their share of frustrations for me, those down moments were quickly washed away by the deepening mystery — which definitely has an ending, but it’s perhaps not where you might expect it to be once you get there.

It’s like I told you right up front: Twelve Minutes is an untrustworthy game. It’s driven by lies, thematically and literally. You’re offered the illusion of control in exchange for an unexpected story that twists and turns in ways you’ll never see coming. As the minutes tick down on each new loop, and the inevitability of its gruesome end approaches, all that’s left for you to do is hack away at the lies again and again until the dirty, horrifying truth is finally exposed — whether or not you want to see it.

16 best websites, apps, and accounts if you love looking at houses and real estate listings

Looking at houses can be fun and addictive.

Trawling around real estate listing has long been an internet pastime, but my goodness, did it ever become a hobby for folks during the pandemic.

It makes sense. With nothing to do — nothing but sit inside, perhaps in a home you no longer really loved — it was fun to peruse other houses. It’s lovely escapism.

Looking at houses, apartments, mansions, tiny homes, or other abodes online remains a great way to waste time, however, even if there is more stuff to do these days.

To help you in your house searching endeavors, we’ve collected 16 of our favorite places to look at houses online.

The classic sites and apps

These are the tried and true listing sites, which all have apps to use as well. They’re for perusing your area or searching for a new home in, say, Montana.

1. Zillow

The classic. The brand name. Zillow is what most folks surf when they’re looking at houses. You can download the app if you wan’t to scroll on your phone, too.

2. Realtor

Basically, if you know Zillow, then Realtor.com is going to feel very similar. It, too, has an app, which you can find here.

3. Redfin

Redfin is, again, a listings site with an app.

4. Trulia

OK, so you now have four different options to peruse listings in your chosen area. Trulia, too, has an app.

Other listing sites

5. Foreclosure.com

If you’re a bargain bin shopper or someone, perhaps, with fixer upper dreams, then Foreclosure.com might be the site for you. It’s exactly what it sounds like — a site for finding homes to buy that have been foreclosed upon.

6. FSBO

FSBO stands for For Sale By Owner. It’s a site that, as you might’ve gathered, allows folks to sell their own homes. It perhaps has listings that might’ve escaped sites like Zillow or Trulia.

Other Sites

7. Circa Old Houses

Circa Old Houses is a site for finding cool, old homes that are for sale. It’s fun to look through these classic houses and imagine your unique, perhaps haunted, life in them.

8. McMansion Hell

Pretty much the opposite of Circa Old Houses, McMansion hell — ran by writer Kate Wagner — dedicates itself to deconstructing the strangest feats of dumb, faux-fancy architecture.

Instagram accounts

9. @cheapnordichouses

If you’ve ever had dreams of packing up and living a simple life in the Nordics, then you could get lost on this account for hours. It features beautiful homes that are reasonably prices and, typically speaking, quaint as hell.

10. @brownstone_voyeur

As a city dweller who doesn’t plan to move anytime soon, Brownstone Voyeur really speaks to me. It’s an account dedicated to historic, grand homes.

11. @cheapoldhouses

You might already know Cheap Old Houses, considering it has nearly 2 million followers and inspired a TV show. If you’ve got the fixer upper bug, beware: You might suddenly want to actually buy one of these homes.

12. @zillowgonewild

Zillow Gone Wild is an account dedicated to the weirdest homes on the market. You never know what you’re going to get: a fake castle, a ship planted in the ground, or more stuffed animals than is humanly possible.

13. @tinyhousemovement

If you dream of downsizing, Tiny House Movement is perfect to browse.

Tik Tok accounts

14. @inspector_aj

OK, so this isn’t really a house account. But does feature homes. It’s run by a home inspector who walks you through homes and shows some of the truly wild (and incorrect) things going on in the house. It’s surprisingly addicting.

15. @Heider_RealEstate

Pure escapism. Typically speaking, you’re in for luxury homes (and some McMansions) in the Mid Atlantic area.

16. @zillowtastrophes

Their bio really says it all: “unique, weird, wild real estate.” It’s a collection of some of the strangest listings out there.
