Instagram is updating its comments with conversation threads

TwitterFacebook

Today, Instagram announced a major upgrade to its comments section that will let people thread different conversations under a single post.

The feature was first reported as a test on Android apps earlier this summer, but now, the company is adding threaded comments to everyone’s accounts on both Android and iOS.

When users hit “reply” on a comment after today’s update, the comment will appear in a nested thread. Before the update, all replies lived in one column, making it difficult to have multiple conversations on the same post. Read more…

GoFundMe is deleting campaigns created to support the Charlottesville attacker

TwitterFacebook

GoFundMe will not allow campaigns supporting the Charlottesville attacker on its platform.

On Monday, James Fields — the man accused of killing Heather Heyer after driving his car into a crowd of counter-protesters demonstrating against Nazis and white nationalists in Charlottesville, Virginia — told a judge at his arraignment that he can’t afford a lawyer.

Since his admission, Fields’ supporters have tried to start GoFundMe pages to boost his alleged $650-biweekly salary as a security guard, but the company is shutting down campaigns created in support of Fields.

Android phones could swipe the iPhone 8’s most important new feature

TwitterFacebook

Android phones sometimes follow Apple’s lead when it comes to key functionality features, and the next generation of smartphones could be no different. Future Android devices are expected to mimic one of the upcoming iPhone 8’s most anticipated new features: 3D facial scanning.

Qualcomm’s next generation of Snapdragon chips, which will be announced at the end of the year, will have greatly improved, new image signal processors (ISP) and will likely enable even better depth-sensing capabilities for smartphone cameras, according to a report from CNET.

That new processing power could potentially allow phones with the highest-tier Qualcomm chips — which in the current generation of devices include the flagships from OnePlus, Samsung, and HTC — to offer the same 3D facial sensing feature expected to replace Touch ID in the iPhone 8 as its go-to biometric security feature.  Read more…

Ingenious modder combines PlayStation and Xbox in one machine

TwitterFacebook

Why does it have to be console wars? In this deranged year of our lord, 2017, maybe we could all use a little console harmony instead.

That’s hardware wizard Eddie Zarick’s view, anyway. The latest tech creation highlighted on Zarick’s YouTube channel is the appropriately named XStation, and it’s the unholy union of a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in a single, console-shaped box.

Don’t confuse this with an older Zarick project from 2015, which also combined the two consoles but using a laptop form factor. XStation is a console, and consoles are better or whatever.

You can keep up with Zarick’s other projects right here. Read more…

Blizzard tries to rename Battle.net, fails

TwitterFacebook

Less than a year after mysteriously changing “Battle.net” to the “Blizzard app,” Blizzard Entertainment has doubled back.

The Blizzard app, formerly known as Battle.net, has been renamed as “Blizzard Battle.net,” combining the original name of Blizzard’s online service with Blizzard’s own name. Probably a good move considering Battle.net has been a staple of online gaming since the mid-’90s and established itself with that name for roughly 20 years.

If you’ve played a Blizzard game on PC, you have interacted with Battle.net — excuse me, Blizzard Battle.net. Blizzard Battle.net is an all-encompassing online service where people can buy Blizzard games and game subscriptions, add each other as friends and chat, and keep up on Blizzard game news. The service is part of Blizzard’s DNA, which is partially why the company added Battle.net back into the name. Read more…
