Hackers are reportedly inserting porn into ‘Super Mario Odyssey’

TwitterFacebook

Lately it feels like the wholesome world of Nintendo just keeps getting increasingly horny, what with all the revelations about Mario’s nipples, genitals, and Luigi’s enormous schlong. We even wrote about the sexual undertones of some great Super Mario Odyssey photo mode screenshots ourselves.

But the latest NC-17 scandal out of Nintendo is a lot less fun and harmless than all that.

Recent reports indicate that Switch hackers appear to be inserting pornographic images into Super Mario Odyssey via the company’s version of profile pictures. And since lots of kids play that game, a Reddit thread of concerned parents cropped up on r/NintendoSwitch that included some examples of said images. Read more…

Here’s the fundamental flaw with self-driving cars: Humans

TwitterFacebook

The safety driver in a self-driving Uber was not being very safe — aka, not paying attention — when the vehicle in autonomous mode struck and killed a woman in an Arizona city earlier this year, police records show.

Included in a massive Tempe Police Department report this week were details about the March 18 fatal crash. The 318-page report found that Rafaela Vasquez, the 44-year-old driver, was frequently looking down and even smiling and laughing at what appears to be a cellphone streaming an episode of the talent search show, The Voice.

In the moments before the test vehicle hit 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg, who was walking her bicycle across a Tempe, Arizona, road, the test driver, Vasquez, was apparently streaming the TV show through Hulu. A video of the moments before the crash shows Vasquez looking toward her right knee while occasionally looking up and around. Read more…

The real hero of ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ was this cute headbutting dinosaur

TwitterFacebook

Spoilers ahead, but they’re very small, like Compsognathus.

Chris Pratt has the abs, smile, and square jaw. But the real hero of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is Stiggy the Stygimoloch.

Yes, the adorable dinosaur headbutted its way into our hearts by saving our heroes and kicking villain butt, and yes, Stygimoloch was a real creature.

The herbivore had a dome on its head, probably for defense against predators and battling each other for matesStygimoloch is also an excellent name for a metal band(It roughly translates to “Styx demon.”)  Read more…

Watch the trailer for the last episode of ‘Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown’

TwitterFacebook

“It is considered enlightening and therapeutic to think about death for a few minutes a day,” Anthony Bourdain says in the preview for the final episode of Parts Unknown, Season 11. “Life is but a dream.”

As the world continues to mourn the esteemed late travel documentarian, so too must we say goodbye to the TV series that made us feel not only closer to him, but to the world at large. The last episode of the eleventh season of Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown airs on CNN this Sunday, July 24, at 9 p.m.

As of now, it is still unclear whether CNN will air Season 12 of the show, which Bourdain was in the midst of filming at the time of his death. Read more…

The only people left in my Snapchat feed are two Snap employees

TwitterFacebook

Opening Snapchat lately feels like peering into the back of a dark, old wardrobe, and finding nothing but dust.

I still receive the odd enjoyable one-to-one or group Snap, but Snapchat’s desolation shows, badly, in the stories feed.

SEE ALSO: 7 social media apps you totally forgot about — and what happened to them

It’s no secret that Snapchat is losing out to Instagram. Instagram has 1 billion monthly active users, while Snapchat has 191 million. That’s fewer monthly active users than even the amount of stories that Instagram says its users create every day: 300 million.

Those gargantuan numbers are only comprehensible in comparison (where else is 191 million small?) But I can make sense of them on a personal level, too, because my own small social media universe reflects the morbid story that they tell.  Read more…

‘Luke Cage’ Season 2 totally nails how New York City would treat a superhero

TwitterFacebook

One of the coolest things about Netflix’s Marvel series is that it takes its New York City setting very seriously. The characters live at believable addresses, walk down identifiable streets, and even the little incongruities that would make an IRL New Yorker squint — Matt Murdock being able to afford a massive studio apartment while building a law practice from the ground up, for example — have in-universe explanations (only a blind person would put up with a glowing Midtown billboard shining in their window every night).

But New York City is more than a collection of neighborhoods. It’s the people who live there, and Luke Cage Season 2 is the first Marvel series that totally nails the way real New Yorkers would react to having a known superhero in their midst.  Read more…

Google Measure app is available (but glitchy) on even more phones

TwitterFacebook

Even more Android users can now measure things with their phones.

Google Measure — or what is essentially a virtual measuring tape in an app — is now compatible with any device that runs ARCore, Google’s platform for building augmented reality tools.

The Measure app was previously only compatible with devices that supported Project Tango, Google’s now-defunct augmented reality computing platform. But an update today makes the Measure app compatible with various Samsung Galaxy, Sony, and Pixel devices.

Trump appears to have *autographed* photos of murder victims at a bizarre anti-immigration event

TwitterFacebook

Is it a glitch in the matrix or is it just another day in the hellscape of this presidency?

Trump attempted to address the immigration crisis during livestreamed event on Friday. But he didn’t discuss the more than 2,000 immigrant children who have been separated from their families in recent weeks or the last-minute executive order he signed to halt on his own policy. Instead he used it to highlight the families of victims killed by immigrants.

The “angel families” are what Trump calls “victims of illegal immigration.” They were brought on stage clutching large photos of their loved ones and recounted how they dealt with “permanent separation” after the death of their loved ones. Read more…
