How to make your New Year's tech resolutions stick (for real)

As your friend who shops for expensive calendars at Paper Source knows, New Year’s resolutions are mostly a scam by Big Planner. Still, if you’re going to make one, may we humbly suggest you turn your attention to your relationship with technology.

Technology can make our lives easier and more fun. However, it has also damaged our relationships, our country, our planet, and our sense of self.

Netflix’s ‘Spinning Out’ is binge-able, satisfying melodrama

Netflix's 'Spinning Out' is binge-able, satisfying melodrama

After the world lost both One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl in 2012, Netflix stepped up seven years later to fill the void left by both shows with Spinning Out. The drama series, which is set at a skating rink and ski lodge in Sun Valley, Idaho, showcases the competitive spirit and romance that ensues between a group of skaters who spend practically all their time at the lodge or practicing at the rink.

The series follows four figure skaters and one skier gunning for the Olympics: sisters Kat (Kaya Scodelario) and Serena (Willow Shields), fellow skaters Jenn (Amanda Zhou) and Justin (Evan Roderick), and Marcus (Mitchell Edwards), a skier who is friendly with Kat. If that wasn’t enough, Spinning Out also centers around Kat and Serena’s mother, Carol (January Jones), and Kat and Justin’s skating coach, Dasha (Svetlana Efremova). Read more…

Affordable 5G phones and more expansive networks

By now, you probably at least know what mobile 5G is. Carriers like Verizon are already advertising their 5G networks on TV, even though very few devices even support it in the cities where it’s available. The worst part is you can’t really get a 5G-compatible phone for less than $1,000 right now. Read more…

Making sense of the timeline in Netflix’s ‘The Witcher’

Making sense of the timeline in Netflix's 'The Witcher'

The Witcher‘s blend of fantasy, realism, and straight-up folk rock ballads make it one of the more interesting new shows to come out of Netflix in 2019. It is not, however, one of the streaming network’s most straightforward.

Taking place over three timelines, The Witcher weaves all over the place and bamboozles its viewers on purpose, making it hard to discern where and when its characters are at any given time. Whether or not this timeline gambit effective is a question for another time, but for now it’s given Witcher fans (witchies?) a pretty puzzle to parse until Netflix releases Season 2. Read more…

American Girl debuts first Girl of the Year doll with hearing loss

American Girl dolls are ready for 2020.

The Girl of the Year doll for 2020, unveiled on Dec. 31, will be the first with hearing loss. Her name is Joss Kendrick, and she’s a competitive, Southern California athlete who, according to her story, was born deaf in her left ear.

The doll will come with a hearing aid as an accessory that helps her hear out of her right ear.

Created in consultation with a team of experts in hearing loss, surfing, and competitive cheerleading, the new doll marks a broader shift in inclusion efforts at Mattel, the parent company of American Girl.

Major new privacy law in 2020: What you need to know about the CCPA

Major new privacy law in 2020: What you need to know about the CCPA

One huge change coming in 2020 is a new data privacy law called the California Consumer Protection Act, or CCPA. And its effects will be felt far beyond the Golden State.

The CCPA is basically California’s equivalent to the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR. The law, which was signed by Gov. Jerry Brown last year, grants California residents new privacy rights and consumer protections. It goes into effect at the stroke of midnight on Jan. 1, 2020. And, even if you aren’t a resident of California, it could affect you.

What is the CCPA going to do?

Residents of California will have the right to know what personal data is being collected about them and the right to request that this information be deleted. They will also have the right to know the details of how their data is being used, who the data is sold to or shared with, and they can request that their data not be sold to third parties. In addition, Californians will have the right to request access to their personal data. Read more…

20. Booksmart (2019)

Directed by Olivia Wilde, Booksmart has been called the Superbad of female friendships — which really undersells just how spectacularly original it is. Starring Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Deaver, with an exquisite performance by Billie Lourd, this coming-of-age, buddy comedy follows two high schoolers on their last night out before graduation. Perfect for that hair of the dog strategy. Read more…
