Hubble captures a luminous spiral galaxy looking all chill and relaxed

Swirling around in the Virgo constellation, the Hubble Space Telescope captured a look at the spiral galaxy NGC 5037, NASA shared on Friday.

Located roughly 150 million light-years away from Earth, the galaxy was first documented by astronomer and musical composer William Herschel in 1785. This new, incredibly detailed image of the galaxy is a composite of images taken with Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3.

The full image shows NGC 5037 encased in a wide, bold border of dark space.

The full image of NGC 5037 reveals a broader look at the galaxy's surroundings, a largely black abyss with a smattering of distant lights.

'Cruella' and the 'Quiet Place' sequel signal a hot start for the 2021 summer box office

Nature is healing, and so, apparently, is Hollywood.

After a blockbuster international opening for F9 just a week ago, the Memorial Day weekend box office in the United States has got to be happy news for Hollywood executives. The weekend’s big winner is A Quiet Place Part II, which earned an estimated $48.4 million domestically, according to Comscore.

Disney’s Cruella is set to finish the weekend at number two, with an estimated $21.3 million. Both movies are in their opening weekends, and both opened wide in close to 4,000 theaters each. Note, too, that these numbers just cover the Friday-to-Sunday three-day weekendQuiet Place should hit roughly $58.5 million after Monday tickets are factored in, and Cruella should go up to around $26.5 million, Read more…

Shoes force us to confront the legacy of abuse of Native Americans

Shoes force us to confront the legacy of abuse of Native Americans

After the discovery of more than 215 Indigenous children’s remains at a former residential school in Canada, a shoe exhibit urges people to pay homage to their memories.

An artist, Tamara Bell, told CTV News she grew up hearing about children who died in these schools, and the news made her think of her mother who attended a residential school.

This educational system is a dark and, until recently, hidden chapter in Canada’s history. From about 1883 to 1996, Canadian authorities separated around 15,000 Indigenous children from their families, The Washington Post reported. Students weren’t allowed to speak Indigenous languages nor practice their families’ traditions and were physically and sexually abused, according to Canada’s 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission final report.  Read more…

How to turn off location history in Google Maps

How to turn off location history in Google Maps

Sometimes it feels a little creepy to open Google Maps and see a detailed list of the last few places I’ve been. I really wouldn’t want that information to fall into the wrong hands.

Google gets it, which is why the company introduced a simplified way to turn off location history from within Google Maps Timeline. The feature is now live for Android users and Google says it plans to eventually bring it to iOS users as well.

Less tapping? Yes, please.

Google’s new “Location History” feature will show up as a simple toggle right on your Timeline interface. It’s a super convenient change, since you can now easily disable history without going anywhere else in the app. Previously, erasing your location history took several extra, unintuitive steps within the Maps app.  Read more…

You want clips from the HBO Max 'Friends' reunion? We've got 'Friends' reunion clips.

For a show that ended more than 15 years ago, Friends is still pretty popular.

HBO Max subscribers were treated on Thursday to the highly anticipated Friends: The Reunion special (aka “The One Where They Get Back Together”). The two-hour event brought the show’s main cast back together for some games, celebrity moments, behind the scenes reminiscences, and table reads.

You’ll need an HBO Max subscription to check out the whole special of course, but on Saturday HBO released a trio of clips that offer a taste of the full thing. This first clip sees Lisa Kudrow, Jennifer Aniston, and David Schwimmer re-enacting a scene from “The One Where Everybody Finds Out,” and the iconic moment where Kudrow’s Phoebe catches Monica (Courteney Cox) and Chandler (Matthew Perry) being intimate. How to hide your ‘Last Seen’ status on WhatsApp

How to hide your 'Last Seen' status on WhatsApp

If you’re the type who has a tendency to answer WhatsApp messages at your own (very slow) pace, then chances are you don’t want people knowing when you’re on the app.

With WhatsApp’s “Last Seen” and “Online” status features, it lets your contacts see the last time you used the app and when you’re currently using it, respectively.

For those who want to remain incognito, here’s how to hide your status in a few easy steps.

1) Go to Settings

Whether you’re using iOS or Android, the Settings menu will be the same. Tap on the icon in the right-hand corner of the app.  Read more…

Tesla’s in-car cameras will now monitor your driving on Autopilot

Tesla's in-car cameras will now monitor your driving on Autopilot

If you own a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y, then it’s apparently now possible the in-car camera is or soon will be monitoring you while on Autopilot. According to TechCrunch, Tesla has reportedly enabled the capability through a software update.

The use of the new feature was originally spotted on Twitter, after a current Tesla owner took to the platform to post images of the latest software version on his Model Y.

Delivery was super smooth. Summon and lane departure avoidance disabled for now, increased follow distance, hard cap at 75, requires auto brights or kicks out of AP, cabin camera for driver monitoring.. nothing unexpected yetpic.twitter.com/gKIkHSGNI7

Want to skywatch for Starlink satellites? There’s a website that will help you.

Want to skywatch for Starlink satellites? There's a website that will help you.

There isn’t a constellation quite like the image a line of Starlink satellites cuts across Earth’s skies. And now there’s an easy way to figure out when you can see them.

The SpaceX-operated gear is meant to one day provide high speed, satellite-powered internet all around the world. It’s already semi-functional and open for live testing (at quite a cost), but the eventual orbital network, which is already approved by the FCC, will consist of 12,000 satellites in all.

This raises some questions about what the sky will eventually look like for amateur and professional skywatchers alike. There’s also the risk of a “space junk”-related orbital catastrophe. For now, though, SpaceX is sending them to space in batches of 60 and lines of them are circling the planet in formations that are (under the right circumstances) clearly visible from the ground.
