Everything is not ‘awesome’ at Facebook, says Instagram co-founder

TwitterFacebook

Everything may be awesome and cool when you’re part of a team, as The LEGO Movie taught us. But apparently that doesn’t apply to the team at Facebook.

The social media giant has been rocked by a number of high-profile departures recently — the highest profile of whom were Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. The pair resigned late last month, after rumors of feuds with former friend and Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg.

At the Wired 25 summit in San Francisco on Monday, his first public appearance since the unexpected exit, Systrom finally gave us an on-the-record hint that all was not well in the House of Zuckerberg.  Read more…

Sudden price drop shows largest ‘stablecoin,’ Tether, isn’t so stable after all

TwitterFacebook

I mean, it’s right there in the name.

The largest so-called stablecoin by market cap, Tether (USDT), is supposedly pegged to the U.S. dollar and always worth $1. However, if there’s one thing we know for sure about the world of cryptocurrency, it’s that things don’t always go according to plan — a fact emphasized by Tether’s sudden plunge in value over the last 24 hours.

The stablecoin briefly traded below $.87 on the exchange Bittrex before climbing back up to the still-abysmal price of $.915 at the time of this writing.

Trump tells ’60 Minutes’ that climate change will ‘change back again’

TwitterFacebook

In a seemingly rare instance, Donald Trump was pressed about his views on climate change on Sunday in an interview with 60 Minutes’ Lesley Stahl.

Although Trump stepped back from his previous claims that climate change is a hoax, he stopped short of acknowledging that it is a manmade problem, and claimed that global warming will somehow reverse.

“I think something’s happening. Something’s changing and it’ll change back again. I don’t think it’s a hoax, I think there’s probably a difference,” he told the program.  Read more…

Riley Curry is growing up but still warming our hearts

TwitterFacebook

Riley Curry, daughter of NBA star Steph Curry and celebrity cook Ayesha Curry, may no longer be the delightful toddler interrupting her dad’s press conferences, but she’s still pretty darn adorable and capable of capturing our hearts.

Cameras caught Riley, now six years old, throwing down some mean dance moves during the final preseason game for her dad’s Golden State Warriors (a loss to the Lakers), proving that she’s still got what it takes to be captivating.

And judging by the reaction on social media, Riley still has what it takes to go viral.  Read more…

People are pissed that Sen. David Perdue snatched a student’s phone

TwitterFacebook

Senator David Perdue snatched a Georgia Tech student’s phone from their hands on Saturday, and people are pretty outraged.

When visiting the Atlanta campus to attend a campaign event for Republican gubernatorial nominee Brian Kemp, Perdue was questioned by a GT member of Young Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA) about voter suppression in Georgia.

The new ‘Doctor Who’ title sequence is a real trip

TwitterFacebook

For the eleventh series of Doctor Who, the beloved sci-fi show’s title sequence has taken a trippier turn.

The latest season features Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor, and she’s landed with a shiny new theme and a kaleidoscopic title sequence — albeit missing the TARDIS whizzing around — which debuted on second episode “The Ghost Monument.”

The sequence is the work of a visual effects artist only known as John Smith, who made his own opening back in 2010 as a 16-year-old fan and posted it to YouTube.

“I had no idea what I was doing, but was so excited for Matt Smith’s first series that I decided to try what every Whovian-turned-VFX-Artist does at some point… making my own title sequence for the show,” Smith wrote in a Facebook post. Read more…

Giant escaped pig lured back to his California home with help from Doritos

TwitterFacebook

Giant pigs aren’t exactly a common sight on the streets of southern California. But when one started tromping around in San Bernadino, local police came up with a solution that was equal parts ingenious and delicious.

Doritos.

The popular flavored tortilla chips turned out to be a very effective lure when it came to convincing the pig that it was time to return home. The San Bernadino County sheriff’s office even documented the extremely scientific pig wrangling on Instagram.

Well if this doesn’t go on the list of unusual calls… ? Highland Station received a call reference a pig “the size of a mini horse” ?? running around the neighborhood.
