Tributes pour in for late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen

TwitterFacebook

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s death has prompted heartfelt tributes from tech luminaries, but he’s also been lauded for his work in sports and philanthropy.

Allen passed away on Monday, his family confirmed, after complications from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

“My brother was a remarkable individual on every level. While most knew Paul Allen as a technologist and philanthropist, for us he was a much loved brother and uncle, and an exceptional friend,” Allen’s sister, Jody, said in a statement.

While Allen left Microsoft in 1983 following a protracted dispute with Bill Gates over his share of the company, Allen held onto his shares, resulting in him becoming a billionaire after the company went public three years later. Read more…

The ‘Same Energy’ meme oddly makes perfect sense

TwitterFacebook

You know when you see two vastly different photos that just … give off the same energy?

It’s been a year for describing things by their vibes, from BDE to horse girl energy. The latest: comparing images that inexplicably give off the same energy.

Whether comparing a K-Pop star with a deflated rubber chicken or putting Cara Delevingne’s royal wedding attire side-by-side with Pearl from Steven Universe, there are certain moods that are just, well, the same.

Why does this make total sense?

Jeff Bezos is totally cool with governments investigating Amazon

TwitterFacebook

The world’s richest man is spending a billion dollars a year helping to launch the human race into space. Next to that goal, the threat of a government antitrust investigation into his trillion-dollar company is no big deal.

That was the impression Jeff Bezos gave at the Wired 25 summit in San Francisco Monday. In an unscheduled interview, Bezos enthused about his space startup Blue Origin — but also insisted he was in favor of the government turning up the heat on Amazon, which some observers say is a monopoly that needs to be broken up.

Everything is not ‘awesome’ at Facebook, says Instagram co-founder

TwitterFacebook

Everything may be awesome and cool when you’re part of a team, as The LEGO Movie taught us. But apparently that doesn’t apply to the team at Facebook.

The social media giant has been rocked by a number of high-profile departures recently — the highest profile of whom were Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. The pair resigned late last month, after rumors of feuds with former friend and Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg.

At the Wired 25 summit in San Francisco on Monday, his first public appearance since the unexpected exit, Systrom finally gave us an on-the-record hint that all was not well in the House of Zuckerberg.  Read more…

Sudden price drop shows largest ‘stablecoin,’ Tether, isn’t so stable after all

TwitterFacebook

I mean, it’s right there in the name.

The largest so-called stablecoin by market cap, Tether (USDT), is supposedly pegged to the U.S. dollar and always worth $1. However, if there’s one thing we know for sure about the world of cryptocurrency, it’s that things don’t always go according to plan — a fact emphasized by Tether’s sudden plunge in value over the last 24 hours.

The stablecoin briefly traded below $.87 on the exchange Bittrex before climbing back up to the still-abysmal price of $.915 at the time of this writing.

Trump tells ’60 Minutes’ that climate change will ‘change back again’

TwitterFacebook

In a seemingly rare instance, Donald Trump was pressed about his views on climate change on Sunday in an interview with 60 Minutes’ Lesley Stahl.

Although Trump stepped back from his previous claims that climate change is a hoax, he stopped short of acknowledging that it is a manmade problem, and claimed that global warming will somehow reverse.

“I think something’s happening. Something’s changing and it’ll change back again. I don’t think it’s a hoax, I think there’s probably a difference,” he told the program.  Read more…

Riley Curry is growing up but still warming our hearts

TwitterFacebook

Riley Curry, daughter of NBA star Steph Curry and celebrity cook Ayesha Curry, may no longer be the delightful toddler interrupting her dad’s press conferences, but she’s still pretty darn adorable and capable of capturing our hearts.
