Brett Kavanaugh protesters ignore police barricades, occupy the U.S. Capitol

TwitterFacebook

It’s very likely that alleged sexual assaulter Brett Kavanaugh will be confirmed on Saturday as a U.S. Supreme Court judge. The #resistance is having none of that noise.

With hours to go before the Saturday afternoon Senate vote, protesters gathered in front of the United States Capitol took steps to make sure they’d be heard. As a group, they busted through police barricades and took up residence on the Capitol Building’s east steps.

The dramatic moment was captured on camera and quickly went viral.

.@womensmarch just took the Capitol. Women, survivors, and allies walked straight past the police, climbed over barricades, and sat down on the Capitol steps

It was hard not do feel depleted this morning. But I don’t anymore. This was inspiring. We’re ready for thispic.twitter.com/YIlDrelaiz

Microsoft ‘paused’ latest Windows 10 update after users’ files disappear

TwitterFacebook

Microsoft’s latest Windows 10 update hasn’t gone as planned.

The company has temporarily pulled the Windows 10 October 2018 Update after reports the new software deleted some users’ files.

SEE ALSO: Is Microsoft hurting USB-C?

It’s a pretty serious issue, and one Microsoft hasn’t said much about, though it’s been widely reported on Reddit and support forums, according to The Verge.

“We have paused the rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) for all users as we investigate isolated reports of users missing some files after updating,” the company wrote on a support site.

It’s not clear how long the current “pause” will be in effect, but the company notes it will provide an update when the software is ready (and hopefully bug free). In the meantime, Microsoft advises anyone who has manually downloaded the update, but hasn’t yet installed it, to wait until the next update becomes available before installing. As for the unlucky people who have already lost files due to the update, Microsoft is suggesting they call the company’s customer support. Read more…

A rock casually used as a doorstop for decades is actually a $100,000 meteorite

TwitterFacebook

Next time you prop open your door with a makeshift doorstop such as a stone, you might want to give it a closer look. David Mazurek, a lucky man from Michigan, did just that and it really paid off.

After finally investigating the rock he’d used as a doorstop for literal decades, Mazurek discovered it’s actually a meteorite worth $100,000. ?

Mazurek was inspired to take the doorstop to Central Michigan University for inspection after seeing reports of meteorite pieces selling for thousands of dollars earlier this year, according to Associated Press.

“I said, ‘Wait a minute. I wonder how much mine is worth,'” he told the news organization. Read more…

The unannounced Pixel 3 XL is already for sale in one store

TwitterFacebook

Google’s big Pixel event is a couple days away and the leaks just reached a new level of ridiculous.

Does it even count as a leak if you can just walk into a store and try it out? That’s what Engadget’s Richard Lai apparently did. The Hong Kong-based writer reports that a local mobile phone shop is selling the still unannounced Pixel 3 XL.

It’s not clear if Lai actually purchased the device himself — the shop was reportedly selling the phone for the equivalent of $2,300 USD — but he was able to complete a rather thorough hands on with it.  Read more…

A Twitter convo about self-appreciation was the best thing on the internet this week

TwitterFacebook

This is One Good Thing, a weekly column where we tell you about one of the few nice things that happened this week.

This week, a bunch of people had a really nice conversation about change, self-acceptance, and personal growth. On Twitter. (Yes, that is possible.)

It all started when writer and 112BK host Ashley Ford posed a question to her followers on Sunday. “What’s something you hated about yourself as a kid or teenager that you now consider a strength?” she asked.

What’s something you hated about yourself as a kid or teenager that you now consider a strength?

Party Rock Anthem has the same BPM as a lot of songs, and it’s a glorious meme now

TwitterFacebook

Please take a moment to appreciate one of the internet’s greatest gifts: the Party Rock Anthem music video set to other songs.

LMFAO’s Party Rock Anthem captures the spirit of 2011, from the thick rimmed glasses, to the skinny jeans, to the inexplicable trend of wearing vests over T-shirts. Although the song is now rarely played at public events other than sweet sixteens and unfortunate weddings, it’s still a beloved piece of pop culture. It’s so thoroughly enjoyed, it went diamond earlier this year, snagging 10 million units through song sales and streams.

Crowdfunding campaign against Susan Collins surges after senator says she’ll confirm Kavanaugh

TwitterFacebook

Susan Collins, a Republican senator from Maine, announced Friday in a long-winded, tone-deaf speech that she’d vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. The decision may be the biggest mistake of her political career.

Before she announced her support, a crowdfunding campaign to unseat Collins in 2020 should she vote for Kavanaugh had already reached $1.8 million. Soon after she began defending Kavanaugh in her speech, the website crashed due to a high level of traffic. Liz Jaff, co-director of the “Be a Hero” campaign, confirmed the incident in a tweet.

Too much traffic for the page @Crowdpac is down but will be back up shortly and then you can show your rage and donate!

People are channeling their rage at Susan Collins through Twitter

It’s been an exhausting day/week/year for America.

Senator Susan Collins faced serious backlash on Friday when she announced her intention to confirm Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court, despite allegations of sexual assault from multiple women.

“My fervent hope is that Brett Kavanaugh will work to lessen the divisions in the Supreme Court,” she said in a speech that really didn’t need to beat around the bush for so long. “So that we have far fewer 5-4 decisions and so that public confidence in our judiciary and our highest court is restored.”  Read more…
