What we know about Prime Day so far: Dates, participating brands, more

In the shopping realm, there’s one telltale sign that nature is healing: Prime Day *isn’t* in October.

When is Prime Day 2021?

June 21 and 22! A press release from Amazon confirmed that Prime Day 2021 will begin on Monday, June 21 at 12 a.m. PT (3 a.m. ET), and conclude on Tuesday, June 22 at 11:59 p.m. PT (2:59 a.m. ET June 23).

Amazon has deviated from its usual mid-July time slot to try something new — and to avoid competition with the Olympics. June may also offer better timing for summer travel plans and graduations. The change from the traditional July date seems like less big of a deal when considering that last year’s Prime Day was less than two months away from Black Friday. Prime Day 2020 was postponed (a few times) due to concerns about the coronavirus, officially landing on Oct. 13 and 14 of 2020. It’s good that it’s back. The people need a summer shopping holiday to offset the winter holiday chaos, okay? Read more…

Earthlings, rejoice: We’re visiting Venus again. Twice.

Earthlings, rejoice: We're visiting Venus again. Twice.

Memo to Elon Musk: You were paying attention to the wrong planet all along. Venus, not Mars, is where it’s at.

That much was confirmed Wednesday, when NASA announced the two winners out of dozens of entries in its $300 million planetary probe contest. VERITAS and DAVINCI+ were chosen as the agency’s next two Discovery missions — and both have our mysterious sister planet in their sights.

The growing community of Venus exploration boosters inside and outside NASA, which I wrote about last year, had hoped at least one of these missions would be anointed — but dared not dream it would be both. Some planetary scientists have been waiting for this day for decades. Leading luminaries promptly lost their shit.  Read more…

Watch: Teen scraps graduation speech to call out ‘dehumanizing’ abortion law

Watch: Teen scraps graduation speech to call out 'dehumanizing' abortion law

You don’t have to wait to change the world.

It appears graduating high school senior Paxton Smith knows that well: The class valedictorian didn’t waste time or mince words when giving her commencement speech in Texas on Sunday. Instead of delivering a pre-approved speech on teen media use, D Magazine reported, she used her platform to decry a bill Texas Gov. Greg Abbott recently signed that bans abortion in the state at six weeks, a time when most people don’t know they’re pregnant.

While her voice shakes at first in the video above, Smith gains confidence as she goes on. (The speech starts at the 4:30 mark.) Read more…

A conspiracy theory about a party supply store went viral on TikTok. Then the police showed up.

A conspiracy theory about a party supply store went viral on TikTok. Then the police showed up.

When you hear the words “viral TikTok video,” you probably think about funny challenges and pop song lip syncs. But there’s another type of content going viral on TikTok: Conspiracy theories.

In fact, TikToks espousing all kinds of wildly false claims have found an incredibly large audience, and while there’s something fascinating about viral conspiracy theories, they can have devastating real world consequences — as one online party supply company recently learned the hard way.

Ionized, a small business that sells novelty items like glow sticks and party hats on Amazon, has endured weeks of endless harassment, a ruined Amazon sales channel, and even visits from law enforcement. All because of a viral TikTok video spreading a QAnon-inspired conspiracy theory alleging that the company is secretly running a child trafficking ring. Read more…

Thousands of Tesla cars recalled for loose brake bolt

Thousands of Tesla cars recalled for loose brake bolt

Nearly 6,000 Tesla cars are being recalled due to loose brake bolts that could lower tire pressure and lead to a crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a recall last week for certain Model 3 (2019-2021) and Model Y (2020-2021) cars. The safety agency estimates only 1 percent of the potentially affected cars actually have the defect.

In 2020, Tesla delivered 442,511 Model 3 and Y cars.

The problem was discovered in December 2020 in a 2021 Model Y with a missing fastener on the driver-side rear brake. Tesla said no crashes or injuries have been reported because of the bolt issue.  Read more…
