Android's Messages app now has end-to-end encryption. Make sure you enable it.

End-to-end encryption for Google’s Messages app on Android is out of beta, meaning you can finally ensure no one can intercept your nudes between your phone and your partner’s. Shine on, you dirty diamonds.

Google announced end-to-end encryption in its Android Messages app last year, with the feature rolling out to beta testers. Now it is finally available more generally — and if you use the Messages app, it’s a good idea to activate it.

“When you use the Messages app to send end-to-end encrypted messages, all chats, including their text and any files or media, are encrypted as the data travels between devices,” says Google. “Encryption converts data into scrambled text. The unreadable text can only be decoded with a secret key.” Read more…

How to avoid flashing lights and photosensitive videos on TikTok

How to avoid flashing lights and photosensitive videos on TikTok

Here’s how to make your For You Page safer if you’re sensitive to flashing lights.

While TikTok’s curated For You Page provides an endless supply of content, users can unintentionally stumble across videos with intense visuals. Flashing lights may be detrimental for those with certain health conditions like migraines and sensory processing disorders, and may trigger a seizure in epileptic viewers.

An estimated 65 million people in the world have epilepsy, and according to the Epilepsy Foundation, one in 26 Americans will develop epilepsy at some point in their life.

“For the people with photosensitive epilepsy, exposure to flashing lights at certain intensities or to certain visual patterns can trigger seizures,” Epilepsy Foundation president Laura Thrall said in a statement with TikTok. “While the population of those with photosensitive epilepsy is small, the impact can be quite serious.”  Read more…

Wooden satellite could be orbiting the Earth by 2021

Wooden satellite could be orbiting the Earth by 2021

A satellite made of wood sounds like a concept ripped from the pages of Leonardo da Vinci’s sketchbooks. But Finnish company Arctic Astronautics wants to launch one into space by the end of 2021.

The WISA Woodsat, a microsatellite constructed out of plywood, was hoisted via weather balloon Saturday almost 20 miles above Earth. It was in the stratosphere to test the plywood construction in space-like conditions.

It was armed with a selfie stick to document its journey and a sensor package supplied by the European Space Agency.

A physically unimposing 4-inch cube, Woodsat’s “space plywood,” made by UPM Plywood, is dried out in a vacuum chamber and coated in a thin layer of aluminum oxide to keep it from degrading amid the highly reactive oxygen above the Earth’s atmosphere. Read more…

New WarioWare? Advance Wars?? ‘Metroid Dread’???? Nintendo’s E3 kicked ass.

New WarioWare? Advance Wars?? 'Metroid Dread'???? Nintendo's E3 kicked ass.

Even with E3 only happening in the most technical sense, Nintendo fans have got to be happy. The Japanese publisher delivered with exciting announcements at its Tuesday showcase.

The headline is unquestionably Metroid Dread, a new 2D game in the Metroid series and the first such Metroid game coming to consoles — yup, this one’s for Switch — in almost 20 years. There’s also a new WarioWare, bringing Nintendo’s oddball minigame marathon emceed by Mario’s arch-nemesis to the latest hardware.

We also got a big time deep cut with a remastered collection gathering together the first two Advance Wars games. If you’ve never played this superb turn-based strategy game — blissfully easy to learn, but lots of complexity beneath the surface — then you’re in for a treat.  Read more…

Disney orders Gaston from ‘Beauty and the Beast’ miniseres

Disney orders Gaston from 'Beauty and the Beast' miniseres

Disney is finally giving you that Gaston prequel you didn’t ask for (at least not seriously). A Gaston and LeFou musical miniseries set before Beauty and the Beast will go into production at Disney+, focusing on the hilarious duo’s adventures before Belle went and messed it all up.

Luke Evans and Josh Gad will reprise their roles as Gaston and LeFou from 2017’s live-action Beauty and the Beast, with Briana Middleton joining the cast as Tilly, LeFou’s stepsister. The miniseries is executive produced and written by Gad, Edward Kitsis, and Adam Horowitz.

“For anyone who’s ever wondered how a brute like Gaston and a goof like LeFou could have ever become friends and partners, or how a mystical enchantress came to cast that fateful spell on the prince-turned-beast, this series will finally provide those answers…and provoke a whole new set of questions,” said Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer, Disney Branded Television.
