The internet is casting its own ‘Knives Out’ movie

Photos of Keke Palmer, Jack Black, and Jennifer Coolidge

If you haven’t seen Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, I won’t spoil it. I did plenty of that in my explanation of what the film says about Elon Musk. But let’s just say the cast did a fantastic job.

That’s become a hallmark of a Knives Out movie. There’s Daniel Craig as detective Benoit Blanc, a compelling mystery story, and a cast loaded with stars. The latest film, Glass Onion, featured Craig, Janelle Monáe, Kate Hudson, Edward Norton, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Dave Bautista, and Madelyn Cline, among other fun cameos.

With Glass Onion finally available to stream on Netflix, folks are already moving on to the next installment in their minds. People really want to cast this movie. And frankly, some people on the internet have some really good ideas.

For instance, now I NEED Jack Black in a Knives Out film. He’d absolutely ham it up to the perfect campy degree.

Ditto with Jennifer Coolidge.

For all those steeped in the drama within the Don’t Worry Darling extended universe, this is a perfect idea.

There are so, so, so many great suggestions online.

It’s fun to dream cast new Knives Out films for a few reasons. Of course, one reason is that any actor is a reasonable get. Chris Evans, Kate Hudson, Ana De Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ed Norton, Janelle Monáe have all said yes to these movies. And both installments were well-received by critics and audiences. So, presumably, lots of stars would sign on for the third movie.

But it’s also fun to dream cast these movies because director Rian Johnson really lets the actors cook in his films. They are full of camp and fun. Glass Onion shows that. Craig is a hammy revelation. Hudson is dialing it up to 11. Hahn steals every scene.

Johnson’s deal with Netflix guarantees we’ll get at least one more Knives Out mystery, and the writer-director has expressed interest in going even bigger in the future. Craig has said he’ll play Blanc as long as he’s asked, but the rest it up to our imagination.

Signing up for Microsoft 365 Family scores you a free $50 gift card at Amazon

Microsoft Office logos on purple background with holographic elements in corner

Get $50 toward Amazon for free: As of Dec. 27, buying a year of Microsoft 365 Family at Amazon scores you a free $50 Amazon gift card. With the 12-month subscription going for $99.99, it’s an indirect savings of 50%.

Every household has that list of core subscription services that are built into the budget without a second thought.

If Microsoft 356 Family is on your list, renewing for the next year at Amazon could indirectly end up paying for a few months’ worth of Disney+ or Netflix. The yearly service, still $99.99 like it is on Microsoft’s website, comes with a free $50 Amazon gift card — a circuitous savings of 50% when you use that free $50 on another purchase.

That savings could cover, say, a recurring streaming service fee for five or six months. (The gift card is a physical one that comes in the mail, so it can be a post-holiday surprise when you almost definitely forget that it was coming.)

Microsoft 365 Family unlocks the big Office apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook for six people, whether that’s a family with kids and parents who use them at school and work or a small business team. 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage is also included for editing and sharing files or photos with others on the account.

The service doubles as parental control software. Access to the Microsoft Family Safety app gives users access to advanced safety features like location tracking, screen time limits, web and app content filters, and drive safety reports.

How scientists might find life on a moon of Saturn while skipping the hardest part

NASA Cassini flying over Enceladus

Researchers believe they may be able to suss out whether microscopic aliens exist on one of Saturn’s 83 moons without having to land a spaceship there.

Enceladus — about 800 million miles away and 25 times smaller than Earth — has captured the imaginations of planetary scientists searching for life beyond the blue marble. The Saturn moon shoots geyser-like plumes containing bits of water and gas from its ocean into space. That constant spray creates a halo, which contributes to one of Saturn’s rings.

Scientists have pushed NASA to endorse future missions to explore the world, requesting financial support to land on its surface. One such proposal, the Enceladus Orbilander designed by Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Maryland, would study it from the moon’s ground — as well as from space — over a 1.5-year period beginning in the 2050s. The complex mission would cost an estimated $2.5 billion, according to The Planetary Society, a nonprofit focused on advancing space science.

Now a research group led from the University of Arizona has laid out a proposal for an approach that’s relatively simple, suggesting that all scientists would need to determine whether microbes live under Enceladus’ icy shell is an orbiting space probe. The study was published in The Planetary Science Journal this December.

“Our research shows that if a biosphere is present in Enceladus’ ocean, signs of its existence could be picked up in plume material without the need to land or drill,” said Antonin Affholder, the lead author, in a statement, “but such a mission would require an orbiter to fly through the plume multiple times to collect lots of oceanic material.”

Just how many times? Perhaps over 100 flybys, according to the paper.

To discover the presence of alien life, the research team has turned the problem on its head: Rather than trying to answer how much organic material would have to be found to prove that life is there, they are focusing on the maximum amount of organic material that could be present without life.

When Enceladus was first studied in 1980 by NASA’s Voyager 1 probe, it didn’t appear as much more than a little snowball. More recently, researchers have learned that the moon’s thick layer of ice conceals a warm saltwater ocean, spewing methane, a gas that usually comes from bacteria and other microorganisms on Earth. Between 2005 and 2017, NASA’s crewless Cassini spacecraft flew through Saturn’s rings and moons, revealing an abundance of new information.

Last year a collaboration between the University of Arizona and Université Paris Sciences et Lettres in Paris calculated that microbial life forms on Enceladus could be what’s causing the moon to burp methane.

“signs of its existence could be picked up in plume material without the need to land or drill.”

The possibility that actual cells would be detected might be slim, because they would have to survive the journey of ejection from deep within an ocean into the vacuum of space. The team of scientists say organic molecules, such as certain amino acids, would serve instead as evidence to support or rule out habitation.

If measurements came back above a certain threshold, it would make a strong case that microbes live on Enceladus.

But, Affholder said: “The definitive evidence of living cells caught on an alien world may remain elusive for generations.”

Blizzard webcams show America adapting to the devastating cold and snowfall

A snowplow plowing in Buffalo, NY

A Christmastime winter storm pummeled much of North America over the weekend, leaving 25 dead in the area around Eerie County, New York — which includes Buffalo — and entire communities buried under several feet of snow. In addition to snowed-in conditions in the Buffalo area, the storm was exacerbated by a larger cold weather trend, with snowfall and precipitation stretching across much of the United States and Canada.

Today (Monday) sees the country attempting to return to some semblance of business as usual. Thankfully, the holiday timing of the disastrous weather is sparing millions of people the need to commute to-and-from work in these conditions. Nonetheless, road crews are busy digging the country out of this snow.

It can all be seen on webcams, most of which had been set up prior to the storm for other purposes. Today, however, they show storm-battered communities coping with the blizzard, clearing crucial infrastructure, and cautiously getting back on the road.

Here’s a round up of winter webcams around the country:

This view of the Peace Bridge, which connects Fort Eerie, Ontario to Buffalo, New York, is a great example of real-time adaptation. The road is relatively clear of snow, even as the storm continues in Buffalo, and as you watch, you can see plows continue to operate throughout the day.

Watertown, New York is coming back to life amid the snow

This view of a lively downtown area in Watertown, New York, northeast of Buffalo, shows you how far the region has come in a short time. Cars are now moving freely — if cautiously — through the area even with snow piled up multiple feet on the side of the road.

Multiple live views of snowy Michigan show the state’s winter resilience

This live cam switches between several feeds all over Michigan, allowing the viewer to see pedestrians getting back to relative normalcy, as well as roadways now once again active. There are also breathtakingly scenic views of the snow covered landscape.

It’s still snowing at Lake Coeur d’Alene in Idaho

This normally placid view of a harbor on Lake Coeur d’Alene in northern Idaho currently (as of this writing) shows snow continuing to fall, and dark clouds continuing to pass overhead. Typically allowing a peek at conditions and activity on the lake for boaters and other vacationers, this camera instead shows the extent of the storm, which is dispersed across the entire country.

The winter views are incredible in snowy Washington state

This storm has been a tragic reminder of the devastating power of winter weather. However, this view of Leavenworth, Washington, in the Cascade Mountains, is a reminder of winter’s austere beauty. For the moment, the town’s Bavarian Village actually offers more astonishing snowy vista’s than Bavaria itself.

A note about climate change and winter storms

Importantly, intense winter freezes will still happen in a heating world. Earth is heating relentlessly, and winter is the fastest-warming season, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration data compiled by Climate Central, an independent organization that researches climate change. But dynamic weather moving through our profoundly chaotic atmosphere will frequently still have opportunities to spill Arctic air into the Lower 48. (Originally published on Mashable here).

Christmas Day has come and gone, and that means it’s time to snag a present for yourself (for cheap) in Australia’s infamous Boxing Day Sales. And, now that it’s 2022, forget the old days of traveling to the inner city to wade through huge crowds. You can score the best Boxing Day deals online, right now!

What is Boxing Day?

Boxing Day is the day after Christmas (December 26), and is a public holiday in Australia. Boxing Day Sales have been a thing in Australia since the 1980s. It was a chance for retailers to quickly sell off their excess inventory from the Christmas season, and traditionally involved a trip into the city, hours of queuing and navigating big crowds. Thankfully, these days you can save yourself a trip and snag a great Boxing Day deal online.

When is Boxing Day in 2022?

Boxing Day falls on Monday, December 26, the day after Christmas (December 25). However, early deals begin to pop up throughout this week leading up to Christmas, and stay online the week following. For example, Amazon Australia’s early Boxing Day deals have already kicked off.

What are the best items to buy on Boxing Day?

The Boxing Day Sales are a great time to score sizable discounts on big-ticket items like laptops, Hi-Fi, consoles and TVs. Online tech retailers will getting rid of stock to make space for the 2023 season, so keep an eye on stores like Amazon, The Good Guys, Bing Lee and Ebay. It’s also worth keeping an eye out specifically for the following products:

  • Appliances: Expect tech and white good retailers like The Good Guys and Bing Lee to go big this Boxing Day, dropping prices on pretty much all stock. This means it’s a great time to find good deals on big items like fridges, freezers, washing machines, as well as the small ones like kettles, toasters and more.

  • Games consoles: Console availability in Australia has been a challenge over the past few years, but things have definitely improved the last few months with PS5s and Xbox Series Xs readily available on Amazon and in gaming retailers. Boxing Day will no doubt bring some great prices on console accessories and games, and even on consoles if we’re lucky!

  • Smartphones: Amazon offers some pretty impressive deals on smartphones the whole year around, and some of these prices should be even lower for Boxing Day.

  • Toys: While many of the in-demand toys will be sold out from Christmas, any left over will be up for grabs! We recommend checking out Amazon for the best deals on Lego, especially for the massively popular Star Wars and Harry Potter sets.

  • TVs: We expect all of the leading retailers to offer some hefty deals on remaining TV stock from top brands like Samsung, Hisense, Sony, LG and Panasonic. It’s worth shopping around for the best TV deals, but you’ll likely have the best chances on The Good Guys, Bing Lee or Kogan.

  • Security and VPNs: Off the back of the recent Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, security companies will again be dropping their prices for Boxing Day – especially to Australians. If you need to renew your cybersecurity or VPN for the upcoming year, now is a great time.

TL;DR: As of Dec. 25, you can get the Carsule Pop-Up Car Tent for only $299.99 instead of $379 — a savings of 20%.

The stories we hear of people quitting their full-time jobs and living a nomadic lifestyle sure sound appealing, but come to think of it, living on the road doesn’t seem very convenient. The lack of a shower with no heating alone is enough to turn most of us off to the idea of going fully nomad.

But if you still want to get a taste of that life, the CARSULE Pop-Up Cabin can help you live comfortably in your car so you can camp out anywhere you wish without doing the most hassle task of all: pitching a tent. And for a limited time, you can get it on sale for 20% off.

A Kickstarter hit with 70 backers and almost $20,000 in pledges, the CARSULE, which we’ve featured before, functions as your living room outdoors. Unlike most standard tents that are only meant for sleeping, CARSULE offers more mobility, thanks to its cubic shape that allows for a 2-meter standing height and an interior that is roomy enough for a wide range of indoor activities. It can fit cars that have a tailgate that swings up, so you’re not limited by your internal car size. It also allows for unlimited configuration to accommodate your unique needs.

If you’re worried about the elements, CARSULE features diagonal ceiling tension lines that can hang accessories and prevent deformation. It’s also waterproof and UV-resistant, and its guy rope can withstand strong breezes. It installs quickly, too, which is the most important part, if we’re being honest.

Ready to try and live the van life? Who knows? Maybe it’s meant for you — even just for a day. The CARSULE Pop-Up Cabin normally retails for $379, but for a limited time, you can get it on sale for only $299.99 — a savings of 20%.
