March For Our Lives protestors borrow a page from the ‘Three Billboards’ playbook

TwitterFacebook

A seemingly endless variety of signs were on display at the March For Our Lives this weekend, but look closely and you may have noticed a few common trends emerging.

One is the bright red sign with bold black text, sometimes accompanied by others like it and usually calling out specific individuals or institutions for their inaction in the face of tragedy. Like so:

Emma Gonzalez’s March For Our Lives speech will go down in history

TwitterFacebook

You’re going to remember this speech for a long time.

At Saturday’s March For Our Lives in Washington, D.C., Parkland activist Emma Gonzalez stood silently crying at the podium for six minutes and 20 seconds — the amount of time it took for a shooter to steal the lives of 17 of her classmates.

“In a little over six minutes, 17 of our friends were taken from us, 15 were injured, and everyone, absolutely everyone, was forever altered,” she said. “Everyone who was there understands. Everyone who has been touched by the cold grip of gun violence understands.” Read more…

Apple’s Tim Cook calls for stronger privacy laws after the Facebook scandal

TwitterFacebook

Tim Cook looks at Facebook’s messy Cambridge Analytica affair as something of a wake-up call.

The Apple CEO has largely kept quiet on privacy issues since Facebook’s troubles sprung up last week. That’s when we learned that the political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica quietly, deceptively gathered data belonging to more than 50 million Facebook users in 2014.

Cook’s silence ended abruptly on Saturday when he fielded a question about the Facebook situation and how it affects his views on data privacy. Speaking at the China Development Forum in Beijing, Cook voiced his support for government regulation (h/t Bloomberg). Read more…

Bill Hader reveals the worst-behaved ‘SNL’ musical guest during his tenure

TwitterFacebook

Working with celebrities isn’t all sunshine and roses. Take it from two Saturday Night Live alums.

During a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Bill Hader and Jay Pharoah revealed the “worst-behaved” musical guest they’d ever encountered during their time on the show: Justin Bieber.

“He was in a bad place,” Hader told Andy Cohen as Pharoah agreed. “Maybe he’s in a better place, but then he was in a very – it was rough.” As he recalled it, Bieber “just seemed exhausted or at the end of his rope.”

And while a hot young celebrity acting out is hardly shocking, Bieber stood out because most SNL guests don’t act that way. “Everyone’s usually on great behavior,” said Hader. Read more…

All the best protest signs from the March For Our Lives

TwitterFacebook

Millions of marchers gathered in cities across the country for Saturday’s March For Our Lives — and they brought their best signs with them.

Teens have spearheaded this movement for meaningful action on gun violence, and that age group turned out to be particularly creative with their slogans. (No surprise there.) Students from Parkland, Fla., wore price tags reading “$1.05” — the value of a human life, determined after dividing the amount of money Marco Rubio accepted from the NRA by the number of students in Florida.

Even from the olds, there were plenty of witty, artful, and poignant messages to go around. Read more…

‘Black Panther’ is officially the biggest superhero movie in U.S. box office history

TwitterFacebook

We knew it was going to happen, and now it has: This weekend, Black Panther will cement its place as the top-earning superhero movie of all time at the U.S. box office.

The current Friday-Sunday estimate of $16.6 million for Black Panther will bring its cumulative domestic total up to $630.9 million (h/t Deadline). That gives it a small-yet-not-insignificant lead over The Avengers, which ended its May-September, 2012 run with a domestic take of $623.3 million.

It’s still early in the weekend, and Black Panther‘s estimate is likely to shift in either direction. But there’s little chance of the current estimate falling by the $7 million it would take to leave Marvel’s latest in second place for one more day. Read more…

The KFC Waffle Double Down is coming … but only in Canada

TwitterFacebook

The KFC Waffle Double Down truly is the Pamela Anderson of fast food menu items: Something so quintessentially, obviously all-American that it comes as a shock to realize … it’s Canadian.

Coming soon. 03.26.18pic.twitter.com/aAhtcbu6Wr

— KFC Canada (@kfc_canada) March 23, 2018

The sandwich is billed as a spin on the classic American pairing of chicken and waffles. It consists of two fried chicken fillets around a Belgian waffle – which has been drizzled with Canadian maple syrup aioli, in a nod to its unlikely country of origin.

Since the Waffle Double Down is not available in the U.S., you’ll have to settle for feasting your eyes on this video. Read more…

Trump’s Twitter ban on trans troops is official, but he can’t implement it yet. Here’s why.

TwitterFacebook

President Donald Trump’s tweets banning transgender people from serving in the military have become policy. It’s officially really official. Like for real this time.

But don’t expect the ban to take immediate effect.

That’s right. It doesn’t matter if the ink’s dry and the policy’s been filed in the Federal Register. Four federal judges have already temporarily blocked the ban from taking effect.

That’s because several organizations, including GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) and National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), sued the U.S. government after Trump tapped out three tweets in July that hurled us into this controversy, blindsiding top military officials and activists.  Read more…

Secret issues plagued Uber’s self-driving car program before fatal crash, report says

TwitterFacebook

Uber’s self-driving car program faced a major setback when one of its cars hit and killed a pedestrian Sunday night — but the program was struggling before the deadly accident.

SEE ALSO: New video shows self-driving Uber before fatally crashing into pedestrian

It appears Uber rushed to launch new programs, modified its safety operations, and didn’t hit goals, according to 100 pages of internal company documents the New York Times obtained and sources familiar with Uber’s self-driving efforts in Phoenix who spoke to the publisher.

An Uber spokesperson didn’t directly deny the Times report in a statement to Mashable, but they did tout the company’s commitment to safety and noted the emotional toll of the crash.  Read more…

Savage grandma’s diary entry is basically the 1925 version of ‘don’t trust men’

TwitterFacebook

Apparently people in the early 1900s were just as salty about dating as people are now.

@_ellaroberts tweeted this photo from her great-grandmother’s diary.

The note, written in 1925, says:

Brutal, Grandma.
