Amazon now lets you broadcast messages between Echo speakers

TwitterFacebook

The company introduced Alexa Announcements, a feature that effectively turns your Echo into an in-home intercom system if you have multiple speakers in your house.

SEE ALSO: Alexa now understands casual time-based music requests — but there’s a catch

Rolling out to Echo devices in the U.S. and Canada today, the new feature lets you broadcast a message to multiple Echo speakers at once. Just say “Alexa, tell everyone to come upstairs,” and “come upstairs,” will play on every Echo in your house. The command also works with “Alexa, announce…” and “Alexa, broadcast…”.  Read more…

11 invaluable life lessons from Cardi B

TwitterFacebook

Is there anyone slaying the game harder than Cardi B right now?

When Cardi’s forever bop “Bodak Yellow” came out in 2017, it was quickly adopted as an anthem for unapologetically celebrating yourself and fully enjoying the rewards of your hard work. The song was the first sign of Cardi’s “fairy-tale come-up,” as The Ringer called it, and through her lyrics, Cardi taught us that it’s okay to embrace your success, stunt on the haters, and tell everyone that tried to hold you back: “LOOK AT ME NOW.”

But that’s not the only lesson that Cardi has taught us.

Big shark swings by cops just doing their job

TwitterFacebook

Cops are used to surprises on the job, but seldom a casual great white shark.

South Australian Police looking to breathalyse and check up on boat operators last Friday were greeted by the animal, who cruised around them for about 10 minutes.

It’s estimated the shark, nicknamed Noah by police, measured around 4.5 to five metres (14 feet) long.

“I told the boys to back off a bit because the shark was right next to us,” fisherman Mark Oaks told ABC News.

“For probably the next 10 or 15 minutes we just sat around. The police brought the big boat in, which is where the footage from above the shark has come from.”  Read more…

Google bought more renewable energy than it needed last year

TwitterFacebook

Since 2017, Google pledged to power its data centres and offices with 100 percent renewable energy.

Now the tech company said it’s surpassed that, announcing in a blog post that it purchased more power from solar and wind than was used by its operations globally last year. Google said it’s the first company of its size to reach that goal.

Of course, Google isn’t completely powered by solar and wind.

For every kilowatt hour of electricity the company consumes, it purchases a kilowatt hour of renewable energy to replace it, which is sourced from a wind or solar farm built specifically for its needs. Read more…

NYC lifts ban on electric bikes, but hoverboards still illegal

TwitterFacebook

New York City is home to one of the biggest bike-sharing networks in the country, but until this week electric bicycles — regular bicycles with an electric motor to give rides a boost — were banned in the bustling city. The confusing ban has kept out bike-sharing companies and frustrated delivery workers.

On Tuesday, though, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that electric-assist bicycles, known as e-bikes, would be allowed to pedal through city streets. Any bikes that can travel faster than 20 mph aren’t allowed and hoverboards remain illegal.
