It’s been a whirlwind few days for MoviePass subscribers. There was the Thursday service outage, the Friday revelation that said outage was due to financial difficulties, the Saturday hype-pology, and continuing headaches all weekend.

Now, on Monday afternoon, the service is acting funny once again, and in a way that suggests larger troubles for the company. Users attempting to look up screenings are reportedly finding very few options to choose from.

Even in the busy borough of New York City’s Manhattan, Mashable entertainment editor and MoviePass subscriber Erin Strecker found only two theaters with screenings available: The Landmark at 57 West and Cinépolis Chelsea. Read more…

NYC gets its first e-bikes, with Jump bikes in the Bronx and Staten Island

TwitterFacebook

Back in April, New York relinquished its unreasonable ban on electric-assist bicycles within the city. And now the first bike-share fleets featuring e-bikes have arrived.

Jump Bikes, which ironically started in New York City, finally arrived in the Big Apple after riding into San Francisco; the nearby beach town of Santa Cruz, California; Washington, D.C.; and other cities more recently.

This weekend the e-bikes available through the Uber app (Uber acquired Jump earlier this year) were newly rentable in Staten Island, and on Monday, the bikes made a debut in the Bronx. Jump still also has its own standalone app, which lets you rent bicycles for $2 for 30 minutes, the same price via the Uber app. Read more…

Twitter asks researchers to help make site less toxic

TwitterFacebook

Twitter just began the hardest part of its cleanup effort.

The company announced Monday that it had selected academic partners who will help study “healthy conversation” as part of its ongoing effort to make Twitter less toxic.

The researchers will tackle some of Twitter’s toughest problems. One group, led by Leiden University political science professor Dr. Rebekah Tromble, will study echo chambers, “uncivil discourse,” and intolerance. The goal, according to Twitter, is to “develop two sets of metrics: how communities form around political discussions on Twitter, and the challenges that may arise as those discussions develop.” Read more…

Virgin America flight attendant has one more safety video dance

TwitterFacebook

A Virgin America flight attendant had one more safety video dance before the brand disappears forever.

People were heartbroken last year when Alaska Airlines announced that it would phase out Virgin America’s brand by 2019. The company bought Virgin in a $2.6 billion merger in 2017, and promised to keep the “flair” that frequent fliers loved about Virgin, like its colorful mood lighting and upbeat loading music.

Jonah Hill and Emma Stone reunite in Netflix’s ‘Maniac,’ which looks nothing like ‘Superbad’

TwitterFacebook

Jonah Hill and Emma Stone played high school sweethearts more than a decade ago in Greg Mottola’s 2007 comedy, Superbad. Now they’re reuniting on screen for the first time since then in a new Netflix limited series from Beasts of No Nation director Cary Fukunaga.

In Maniac, Hill and Stone star as Owen Milgrim and Annie Landsberg, respectively. The two choose to participate in some kind of mysterious pharmaceutical trial for a drug that purports to fix any troubles of the mind.

The 10-episode story is based on a Norwegian TV series of the same name, and it comes to Netflix on Sept. 21. This trailer doesn’t reveal much, but it definitely sets a mood. Read more…

Tesla is selling $1,500 surfboards now, but they sold out instantly

TwitterFacebook

Is Tesla taking merch too far?

Elon Musk has a knack for selling weird branded merchandise that has nothing to do with what his companies actually do — remember The Boring Company’s flamethrowers? Or the $400 leather jackets made from the same automotive grade leather that adorns Tesla interiors?

Tesla added surfboards to its gift shop on Saturday. The surfboards, which were briefly available for the perfectly reasonable price of $1,500, is a collaboration between Tesla Design Studio and Lost Surfboards.

In case you’ve ever wished you could surf a Tesla, the boards feature a “mix of the same high-quality matte and gloss finished used on all our cars.”  Read more…

Android predictive text keeps suggesting ‘sit on my face,’ and Google is fixing it

TwitterFacebook

Google has promised to stop its Android phones from suggesting “my face” when its users text “sit on.”

Cory Doctorow came close to a disaster when he texted his kids’ babysitter, “Hey! Are you free to sit” and Android’s predictive text came up with “on my face.”

“Needless to say, I have never entered that string into my Android device,” he insisted in his tweet.

I was SMSing our babysitter with the default Android SMS app; I typed “Hey! Are you free to sit” and autocomplete came up with “on my face.” Needless to say, I have never entered that string into my Android device. (This is not a joke)
