A study released this week revealed that Neymar has spent an impressive 14 minutes on the ground during the 2018 World Cup. His dramatic falls, slips, fouls, and spills have prompted countless memes, and have even inspired children to act out his most ridiculous moments.

TwitterFacebook

Lemme just state the obvious real quick: Dating is a pain in the ass.

Blind dates are awkward, people become disinterested and ghost, and dating the hot coworker always ends awkwardly. This is probably a pessimistic outlook, but sometimes, it genuinely seems like your chances of finding a match dwindle by the day.

Wikimedia Foundation says proposed European copyright laws infringe on human rights

TwitterFacebook

On Thursday, the European Parliament rejected a controversial proposal to overhaul the European Union’s copyright laws that critics say would significantly damage internet freedom.

The legislation — dubbed the Copyright Directive — was rejected by a vote of 318-278. That means the proposed rules, which passed the European Parliament’s legal branch last month, will now be debated in September.

The proposal is an attempt to modernize copyright laws for the digital age, and its proponents — which include high-profile musicians like David Guetta and Paul McCartney — say it will protect artists from having their work stolen on the internet. But its opponents fear the bill will open the door for widespread censorship. Read more…

Facebook patents hint at ‘skin smoothing’ and karaoke features for live video

TwitterFacebook

Who needs a skincare regimen when you have Facebook?

Two new patents — which were filed by the Menlo Park-based company last year but made public today — hint at new features that may be coming to a live stream near you. And one of them might help cover up all those “perceived imperfections.” (Facebook’s words, not ours.)

The first patent describes a process for “smoothing or softening skin appearance in videos or images in real-time.” The concept is similar to selfie filters that create that glowing, airbrushed look, but would work in real time during a live stream. The software would be able to make “perceived imperfections,” such as “skin blemishes, wrinkles, discolorations, [and] uneven surfaces” less noticeable, according to the filing. Read more…

Netflix tests new price increase strategy for ‘Ultra’ subscription plan

TwitterFacebook

Netflix price changes are always controversial. But luckily, it looks like the streaming company’s latest strategy for getting more money out of users won’t affect most of us (for now).

The streaming giant confirmed to CNET that it has been testing out a new tier for its pricing models for select users in Europe: a €16.99 per month “Ultra” subscription plan, which would provide exclusive access to HDR (high dynamic range) content.

Facebook labeled part of the Declaration of Independence as ‘hate speech’

TwitterFacebook

When Facebook removed a piece of “hate speech”  from its platform, it raised quite a few eyebrows. The reason? It was part of the Declaration of Independence.

A Texas newspaper, The Liberty County Vindicator, was sharing the historical document in “small bites” to make it a “little easier to digest” for readers leading up to July 4. Everything was going fine until the paper’s 10th post, which included this passage from Thomas Jefferson on King George III’s abuses against the colonies:

“He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.” Read more…

This 90-pound ‘blind’ robot dog definitely won’t kill everything you hold dear

TwitterFacebook

It’s dark out. It’s always dark these days. Something about ash from all the fires blocking out the sun? You can’t remember. It’s not like it matters. The MIT Cheetah 3 robot doesn’t need sun to hunt you down and dance on your soon-to-be lifeless corpse.

You recall when you first read about the “full-grown Labrador” sized robot. It was a Thursday in July, and you somehow happened across press release from EurekAlert. The document (remember documents?) described a 90-pound bot designed to navigate without relying on what would then be described as traditional visual cues. Instead, according to the MIT researchers who developed it, it used “tactile information” to move around.  Read more…
