‘Johny Johny Yes Papa’ is just one of many terrifying YouTube videos made for kids

TwitterFacebook

The internet is invested in the tale of Johny, Papa, and their sugary deceit.

“Johny Johny Yes Papa” is probably one of the more terrible things to curse your timeline recently. The nightmarish nursery rhyme went viral over the past week, drawing hundreds of thousands of new people into its lore.

In the most shared version, a child with an absurdly large head sneaks out of bed to gorge on sugar cubes when his father — known only as “Papa” — sternly calls out “Johny” and breaks into a Gangnam Style-type dance.

Hurricane Maria is the deadliest storm of the 21st century

TwitterFacebook

Puerto Rico was ravaged by Hurricane Maria one year ago next month.

Since the island’s long recovery began, the government and independent institutions have worked to figure out exactly how many lives were taken by the effects of the extreme storm.

Today, we have a new, better estimate — and it’s more than 46 times the old one.

According to a new study released by George Washington University (GW), 2,975 people died as a result of the hurricane. The government of Puerto Rico now accepts that number as an accurate death toll, updating their previous official estimate of 64. Read more…

This is the weirdest dog you will ever see

TwitterFacebook

Mr. Bubz the dog has seemingly come out of nowhere, blessing the internet with his snarls and nervous energy.

After a 14-second video of the pup snarling while a man offered some affection was uploaded to YouTube on Monday it quickly ramped up well over 10,000 views.

SEE ALSO: People really want their dogs to chill out with CBD and demand is sky high

And while Mr. Bubz currently only has a handful of post on his Instagram — the first of which was also posted on Monday — he already has over 10,000 followers.

Regardless of what launched Mr. Bubz into an overnight sensation, all I know is that I too love Mr. Bubz, and so should you. He’s not perfect! But who is?  Read more…

Meme perfectly explains the difference between freshman and and senior year

TwitterFacebook

There’s something so embarrassing, yet sweet, about how excited you were before the first day of school freshman year.

By the time senior year of high school or college rolls around, it’s easy to catch yourself doing things a bit differently than the wide-eyed kid you were four years ago. Thankfully there’s a meme that sums up the self-awareness perfectly.

After freshman year, levels of enthusiasm when it comes to getting school supplies quickly drops, right alongside a steady increase of the unshakeable plague that is senioritis.

Bees swarm hot dog stand in Times Square

TwitterFacebook

How many bees is too many bees? I am not 100 percent sure, but there sure were a lot of bees on this hot dog stand in Times Square.

Twitter was abuzz with bee chatter on Tuesday after an enormous number of bees overtook a Sabrett’s umbrella on 43rd Street in Manhattan. According to an expert cited by Gothamist, the bees were probably “expats from a nearby beehive” who decided to park close to home and wait for their queen. Very feminist!

After news of the bees spread throughout the city’s media hive mind, the New York Police Department roped off part of the street, then began to suck the bees up with a special bee vacuum. (In fact, the NYPD has long retained a bee cop.) Read more…

Google lets you create a sticker version of yourself with selfies

TwitterFacebook

With tools like Apple’s Memoji and Snapchat’s Bitmoji, you’re missing out if you don’t have an animated version of yourself on your phone.

Google is making that process easier on its iOS and Android keyboard extension, Gboard, with the addition of “Minis.” The feature will let you convert your selfies into stickers that are based on your likeness.

As per Engadget, the feature uses a combination of machine learning, neural networks, and artist illustrations to come up with cartoon emoji.

Europe is way ahead of U.S. when it comes to electric vehicles

Europe can’t get enough electric vehicles.

In the region so far this year, 195,000 electric vehicles were sold — up 42 percent from this period last year, according to a report from Swedish industry consulting group EV-Volumes.

That’s more than the U.S., which saw 122,000 electric vehicles sold in the first six months of 2018. Norway leads Europe with the most electric vehicle sales: 36,500 for the first half of 2018 already. But Germany is expected to take the lead by the end of the year.

Man catches foul ball in beer cup, then chugs

TwitterFacebook

If you catch a foul ball with your beer cup at a baseball game, the only reasonable thing to do is to chug the remainder of your beer.

A Cubs fan completed his legacy on Monday evening at Wrigley Field in Chicago during a game against the New York Mets. After successfully catching the foul ball hit by first baseman Anthony Rizzo, the man removed his hat, saluted the stadium, and chugged the beer. The crowd went “wild.”

Like Lyft, Uber CEO wants more riders on scooters, bikes

TwitterFacebook

Uber is a ride-hailing app, but lately it’s become an app for riding an electric bike or scooter, renting a car, and even checking when the bus is coming.

In an interview released over the weekend in the Financial Times, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi emphasized his goal of turning Uber into a diverse mobility platform. Translation: He wants the app to offer passengers as many different ways to get around as possible. It’s not just about ordering a car.

In the interview, Khosrowshahi said, “During rush hour, it is very inefficient for a one-ton hulk of metal to take one person 10 blocks.” Instead, he’d like passengers to get on a bicycle or an e-scooter. It’s quicker and easier. Read more…

The before and after dorm meme makes fun of over the top makeovers

TwitterFacebook

Seeing excessive dorm room makeovers fills me with a rage I can’t quite describe. Thankfully, there’s a meme that pokes fun at super extra before and after posts.

Everyone knows that college dorm rooms are sad, barren spaces for nightly existential crises, not glamorous Instagram-friendly #goals photo ops. After all, you’ll stay in a room for less than a year. Do you really plan on taking all of these decorations down, put them in storage, and then do the whole thing over again next August?

The wildly extravagant decor doesn’t even account for RA inspections! Most college residence halls don’t even allow coffee makers, much less fire hazards like curtains and upholstered furniture. It’s a housing code violation waiting to happen. Read more…
