Garfield the cat just pissed off a bunch of people on Election Day

TwitterFacebook

The midterm elections have outdone themselves in terms of absurdity thanks to Garfield, the cartoon cat whose comic strip hasn’t been funny since President Ronald Reagan left the White House.

Yes, Garfield, the cat who loves lasagna and hates Mondays, is apparently apathetic about whether or not you vote, according to a post on the comic strip character’s Instagram account. Now people are arguing that Garfield’s gone full Melania online.

Facebook admits it didn’t do enough to prevent ‘offline violence’ in Myanmar

TwitterFacebook

A night before the U.S. midterm elections, Facebook has dropped an independent report into the platform’s effect in Myanmar.

The report into Facebook’s impact on human rights within the country was commissioned by the social media giant, but completed by non-profit organization BSR (Business for Social Responsibility).

And it affirms what many have suspected: Facebook didn’t do enough to prevent violence and division in Myanmar.

“The report concludes that, prior to this year, we weren’t doing enough to help prevent our platform from being used to foment division and incite offline violence. We agree that we can and should do more,” Facebook’s product policy manager Alex Warofka wrote in a statement. Read more…

The Rock’s call to vote is … really something

TwitterFacebook

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson posted a reminder to vote and it really is something else.

In his call to vote posted on Instagram on Monday, The Rock holds a poorly Photoshopped Kevin Hart in his massive, beefy arms. The Rock, playing the part of the hot paternal savior, appears to be flexing every muscle in his brawny body while cradling the tiny, incredibly stressed looking Hart.

Get out and VOTE. Don’t do it for me. Do it for our little ones. #vote ??

Instagram is working on a Stories feature for schools

TwitterFacebook

Instagram is unsurprisingly trying to make its platform more attractive for students to hang out on.

As spotted by computer science student Jane Manchun Wong and reported by TechCrunch, the photo and video sharing app is looking into school Stories.

SEE ALSO: Instagram adds ‘I voted’ stickers to Stories

The feature will seemingly allow users from a certain school to contribute to and view a communal Story. To alleviate any potential bullying, the Stories will be moderated by a human, which would be quite a bit of work if the feature was to be rolled out.

“School Stories are manually reviewed to make sure the community is safe,” reads text in the app’s code. Read more…

Whatever happened to Starman? SpaceX says he’s gone beyond Mars.

TwitterFacebook

Hey, so what happened to Starman?

It’s been nine months since we saw SpaceX’s heroic space suit-clad mannequin cruising through space in a Tesla Roadster.

On Feb. 14, we watched Starman disappear into deep space, after being carried carried into orbit by SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket, which launched its maiden flight and landed two of its three main boosters back on Earth — we were there.

And now, he’s made it past Mars.

According to a diagram tweeted by SpaceX on Monday, Starman is reasonably close to Mars, but beyond its orbit.

The snake ‘accidentally donated to Goodwill’ has been reunited with its owner

TwitterFacebook

Good news everyone: Toki the snake has been reunited with his family after he was accidentally donated to Goodwill. Whoops!

Toki the snake had been missing for six whole months before he eventually turned up at the local Goodwill in Fort Worth, Texas. His owner, Austin Pair, left him in his covered tank with plenty of food when they vacationed in Hawaii. When Pair came back, Toki was gone.

SEE ALSO: So, turns out snakes have been hitchhiking on planes. Have a nice flight.

“I had to kind of makeshift a lid for it,” Pair told the Star-Telegram. “He’d gotten out before, so I’d taped it, reinforced it, put weights on it — but he pushed the light fixture over and disappeared.” Read more…

Best gifts for your dad: Gift ideas for dear ol’ dad that go way beyond the played out tie

TwitterFacebook

Have you ever tried to buy a gift for the man in your life only to discover that all the internet can recommend is knives? This is not that gift guide.

This gift guide takes an expansive view of masculinity, one that tries not to place your dad in the dreaded Man Box. This masculinity is cultivated. Worldly. Not entirely reliant on tools or sharp things.

When shopping for your dad, try to think outside the standard Dad Gifts. Unless your dad is an avid tie collector and seriously *lives* for ties (who lives for ties?) then avoid this played out cliché. Instead, get him something that says “I see your hobbies and I respect them.”  Read more…

PSA: The creator of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ wants you to vote in the midterm elections

TwitterFacebook

On Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, the former United States of America was violently transformed into the Republic of Gilead, a totalitarian state in which only the worst people have a say in the political process. Taking power from the many and giving it to the few resulted in…pretty much everything terrifying about The Handmaid’s Tale.

How to turn on Hulu’s Night Mode

TwitterFacebook

Whether you call it night mode or dark mode, it’s a trend that plenty of websites and apps have embraced.

Hulu is joining the party by rolling out Night Mode to all web users. It swaps the traditionally brighter colors of an interface for darker tones, like grey or black. For classic software users or fans of Slack, it’s akin to changing the theme.

Night Mode on Hulu’s web version changes the whole site, from the homepage to the search box and the show pages. Switching to darker colors can lessen eye strain, but can make consuming content a more immersive experience. Sound like it’s up your alley? Night Mode is available for all Hulu users now.
