Is the gig economy bill a disaster or triumph for ride-hailing? Depends on who you ask.

TwitterFacebook

Uber and Lyft have been warning drivers about the end of flexible schedules, and passengers about more expensive rides that take longer to arrive, all thanks to a California bill that passed this week.

But drivers and other gig workers are celebrating what could be a pathway to fair pay, benefits, and other employee rights, which some claim will come at only a slight cost to riders.

After the bill, called AB5, makes its way to the governor’s desk, it should go into effect on Jan. 1, 2020. It would make companies reclassify many independent contractors as employees, something Uber and Lyft have opposed.  Read more…

Kobe Bryant dunks on the children he coached because they made fourth place

TwitterFacebook

Kobe Bryant continues to make regrettable life decisions.

The NBA star turned youth basketball coach was not happy about his team taking home fourth place two years ago, so he brought it up again on Instagram. The Mamba League doesn’t look particularly happy either.

To celebrate the Mamba League’s 115-27 victory, he decided to remind everyone of the time they lost against the team they had just won against. Bryant posted what can only be described as a perfect snapshot of prepubescent disappointment on Instagram: a group photo of the team holding their fourth place trophies.

The company will continue to offer the upfront 2-year plan alongside the subscription model. However, the monthly subscription offers users the ability to continue paying indefinitely, extending Apple’s warranty until the consumer chooses to stop paying the recurring fee. Read more…

This is why the iPhone 11 doesn’t have 5G

TwitterFacebook

It’s not called the “iCamera,” but Apple spent zero time talking about how its brand-new iPhones, the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro, work as, you know, phones.

As other smartphone makers race towards 5G, Apple is holding back. There are both sensible business reasons and Apple-specific reasons for doing so.

5G right now is a mess. The only US-compatible 5G chipset ready for a fall launch is the Qualcomm X50. It’s in all of the existing 5G phones, but it doesn’t “just work” the way Apple wants its devices to work. It isn’t compatible with the US carriers’ upcoming multi-band networks, and it appears to make devices overheat in the summer. The antenna modules for the early 5G networks are also finicky at best.
