Byte is already incredibly popular. But can it overtake TikTok?

Byte, the long promised successor to Vine, has already eclipsed its predecessor by one key metric.

In its first week on the App Store and Google Play, the app was downloaded more than 1.3 million times, according to analytics firm Sensor Tower. That’s nearly twice as many downloads as Vine received in its first week on the App Store.

Sensor Tower further notes that the vast majority of Byte’s downloads have so far come from the United States, which accounts for 70 percent of its first-week installs.

Byte, which is backed by Vine cofounder Dom Hofmann, was released exactly seven years to the day Vine was initially launched. Of course, much has changed since Vine first introduced the looping video concept that launched a thousand memes and propelled some of the internet’s earliest influencers to stardom.  Read more…

Electric vehicles dominated the Super Bowl

The San Francisco 49ers may have lost the Super Bowl, but electric vehicles pulled through with a “W.”

Between a surprise Jeep electric bicycle and a first look at the upcoming electric Hummer, EVs had a strong showing in Super Bowl commercials.

Of the seven ads from car companies that played during the game, four featured electric vehicles.

Shakira’s halftime Super Bowl tongue is now a wonderful meme

Shakira's halftime Super Bowl tongue is now a wonderful meme

Shakira blessed us with the first meme of the Super Bowl LIV.

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira’s halftime set was incredible, but the real star of the show was Shakira’s tongue. Mid-choreography, the singer turned to the camera and did this:

Obviously, it’s prime meme material. Her dexterity! Her precision! Shakira is an icon, through and through. Move over, left shark. There’s a new halftime reaction video in town.

Yes, that was Jennifer Lopez’s daughter singing at the Super Bowl halftime show

Yes, that was Jennifer Lopez's daughter singing at the Super Bowl halftime show

Jennifer Lopez was joined by a truly special guest during her Super Bowl halftime show on Sunday: Her 11-year-old daughter Emme Maribel Muñiz.

Muñiz’s performance was a touching moment during a very high-energy show. Muñiz is an aspiring performer, and it stands to reason she’s got a future in the business. The 11-year-old fully nailed belting “Born in the USA” as her mother danced next to her, draped in a double-sided Puerto Rican/American flag.

“She will be performing on stage as the symbol of the American dream,” Lopez told Page Six ahead of the Super Bowl.

Lopez performed the halftime show with Shakira and the duo largely receive strongly positive reviews.  Read more…

Google’s Super Bowl ad will totally make you cry

Google's Super Bowl ad will totally make you cry

Google brought it with their 2020 Super Bowl with their commercial, “Loretta.” And by it, we mean a good cry.

The ad only shows a Google screen — just as with many of their past ads — but there’s so much more to this one. The first search in the commercial is “how not to forget,” which is innocent enough. But don’t worry, the tears are coming.

The narrator is an old man asking Google to remember details about his life with his deceased wife, — like the vacations they shared together and how she hated his mustache. He also uploaded photos of them together throughout their marriage, culminating in a sappy, but not maudlin, look into this (fictional) couple’s marriage.  Read more…

The Mr. Peanut Super Bowl ad revives him as Baby Nut, thanks to the Kool-Aid Man’s tears

The Mr. Peanut Super Bowl ad revives him as Baby Nut, thanks to the Kool-Aid Man's tears

Mr. Peanut is dead, long live Mr. Peanut. After killing off its 104-year-old mascot, Planters revived him in a Super Bowl ad on Sunday.

The spot shows actor Wesley Snipes delivering a graveside eulogy with actor Matt Walsh, the Kool-Aid Man, Mr. Clean, and others in attendance. The Kool-Aid Man cries, that tear falls on Mr. Peanut’s grave, and somehow Mr. Peanut is revived.

The twist? The legume is reborn as a baby. Seemingly feeding off the Baby Yoda hype, the brand dubbed the new character Baby Nut.

The lead-up to the Super Bowl proved to be a strange saga for the Mr. Peanut ad campaign. After debuting a spot showing the legume falling off a cliff and dying, Planters stopped running its death-related promotions after the real-life, tragic passing of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and seven others in a helicopter crash last Sunday.  Read more…
