Ubisoft might be on to something with Far Cry 6 in a way that its games historically haven’t been: It’s getting political. Or that’s the promise, anyway. And the promise is what matters for our purposes here.
A blog post from Far Cry 6 narrative director Navid Khavari, released on Monday, (which was also, notably, a very offline Memorial Day in the United States) laid everything out. It amounted to a hopeful look ahead and a tacit acknowledgment of Ubisoft’s recurring struggles with mixing games and politics — something the French publisher has repeatedly said it’s not interested in doing.
“Our story is political,” the blog post states right up front. “There are hard, relevant discussions in Far Cry 6 about the conditions that lead to the rise of fascism in a nation, the costs of imperialism, forced labor, the need for free-and-fair elections, LGBTQ+ rights, and more within the context of Yara, a fictional island in the Caribbean.” Read more…

Sifting through the masses on a dating app can be difficult and discouraging enough on its own, but nothing is worse than when you see someone you’d really rather not see while swiping. After years of it being a problem, Tinder’s introducing a solution.
After a testing phase in India, Korea, and Japan, Tinder is rolling out the ability to block personal contacts from appearing in the popular dating app’s feed of potential partners. Users can dig into the new feature by going to the settings menu and selecting the “Block Contacts” option. From there, they can go through their phone’s entire collection of contacts and block anyone they’d like to avoid for any reason. Read more…

Twitter’s Nigerian users face a dilemma: Leave the platform or tweet and be arrested.
On Friday, Nigeria banned Twitter — yes, the entirety of Twitter — from the country.
The move comes after Twitter deleted a tweet from Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday. The company also suspended Buhari from using the platform for 12 hours.
According to CNN, Twitter said the tweet violated its abusive behavior policies. Many Nigerians had reported the president’s tweet as well.
Ironically, the Nigerian government announced its “indefinite” suspension of Twitter on…Twitter.
The Federal Government has suspended, indefinitely, the operations of the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, in Nigeria.

Facebook started as a way to rate the attractiveness of female Harvard students. It eventually morphed into a way to post vacation photos, alienate friends and family with political views, shop for furniture, and even find love. Not content to merely worm its way into every other part of our lives, it looks like Facebook’s also getting in the newsletter business very soon.
That’s the word from Recode, anyway. Facebook is reportedly gearing up to launch Bulletin, a service that would let writers circulate newsletters to anyone who wants to subscribe, with both free and paid options, though the details around how that would work are unclear right now. We first heard about this back in January, but its supposedly imminent launch is newsworthy. Read more…

Our own Milky Way is a spiral galaxy, much like the one featured in this newly shared image captured by Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3. What you’re seeing is NGC 691, a spiral galaxy that’s roughly 120 million light-years away.
This beautiful image is more than just a snapshot, thoughHubble doesn’t operate all on its own. An image like this pulls together the details the space telescope is able to discern across multiple wavelengths. Those filtered images are then collected and handed off to a scientifically minded art team that decides which colors best represent each filter. Read more…

Simone Biles is back in competition, so it’s been another great week for fans of sensational gymnastics routines.
The gold medal-winning Olympian is well on her way to participating in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics in July and August, with a superior performance on the first night of the U.S. Gymnastics Championships. She finished the night with the top score in three of the four events she competed in, including the one below (and her score is good enough for second place in the fourth event, bars).

June 4, 2021 was the 32nd anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests in Hong Kong.
Naturally, more people than usual would look up pictures from the 1989 protests on that day. And, of course, the most infamous photos from Tiananmen Square are that of “tank man,” a single Chinese man — who is still unidentified to this day — that stood in the way of Chinese military tanks cracking down on the protests.
If users in the U.S. tried to search “tank man,” on Google Images, this is what they’d see:
However, if they attempted an image search on Microsoft Bing, they would have seen a very different results page: Read more…
