Why we like it

Roombas generally don’t have the ability to map and clean specific rooms until around the $500 price point. That’s what makes the Wyze vacuum so impressive. Its LiDAR tower emits 2,016 laser pointers every second to generate a floor plan of your home. On the app, you can edit walls or re-label areas, or create a schedule.

Why we like it

Shark’s largest self-emptying dock can hold 45 days of dust bin refuse before you’ll need to deal with it.  The vacuum itself maps out your home, then follows that map with methodical row-by-row sweeping. In the Shark app, you can select specific rooms to clean.

Why we like it:

Opting for a vacuum with LiDAR mapping is a smart move for floor plans more complicated than a one-bedroom apartment. The Roborock S5 Max solves bumper car woes by remembering the layout of each floor of your home and steering clear of the virtual boundaries you set. It also brings mopping to the table, which the cheaper S4 Max does not.

Are robot vacuums worth it?

The control of an upright vacuum comes with its own type of satisfaction. But if you’re not one to classify cleaning as cathartic, a robot vacuum could erase that huge, agonizing task from of your chore list. (And did we mention the joy of having “first day clean” floors all the time?)

But whether robot vacuums are worth it or not comes with a caveat: It can’t be just any robot vacuum. A cheap robovac that doesn’t do the job right — scattering dust, bumping into walls, getting stuck on area rugs — might actually create more work for you.

What to consider when buying a robot vacuum

  • Suction power: A vacuum is the one purchase that you hope sucks a lot. Suction power is typically measured in Pascals (Pa), with most current vacs ranging between 1,500 Pa and 3,000 Pa. Stronger sucking will be needed to pick up heavier pieces of debris (be sure to set a no-go zone around Legos) and to pull matted-down pet hair from rugs.

  • Floor type: Carpeting and high pile rugs will probably require stronger suction than hard floors, as well as special features like an extra-wide or self-cleaning brush roll to prevent hair from wrapping and clogging. Folks in homes with multiple floor types might consider a bigger, sturdier robot vacuum that can hurl itself and its wheels over mats, rugs, and transitions from carpet to hard floors.

  • Automatic emptying: Because robot vacuums are typically under four inches tall, their onboard dust bins are also small — which means they frequently require emptying. (Dustbins fill up particularly quickly in homes with pets.) A self-emptying vacuum takes that job out of your hands, emptying itself into a larger dustbin in its charging dock. These larger bins can typically hold weeks of dirt without needing to be cleaned or dumped out.

  • Home layout: Every robot vacuum is equipped with sensors and drop detection. But if your home has lots of rooms, lots of turns, or lots of close-together furniture, you’ll have fewer navigation issues with an advanced model that uses intelligent mapping to remember exactly how your home is laid out, including labeling of specific rooms, mental notes of staircases, and ability to deploy zone cleaning.

  • Low-profile furniture: No one should have to be scared about what’s accumulated under their couch over the past year. A robot vacuum measuring three inches or less in height should be able to scoot under most low-hanging couches and beds.

  • Battery life and square footage: One of the main complaints people have about their robot vacuum is that it craps out in the middle of the floor. Larger spaces require more time to clean, and it all depends on how annoyed you’ll be if it only finishes a few rooms at a time. Average run times for the list below range between 90 and 200 minutes, which translate to about 500 and 2,800 square feet covered on one charge.

  • App control: WiFi-enabled robot vacuums can be synced with a smartphone app to control scheduling, manual start, cleaning settings, as well as telling your vac to make its rounds when you’re not home. Low-end models that don’t connect to WiFi will usually come with a separate remote. If you’re used to asking Alexa or Google to turn off the lights or tell you the weather, a model with voice integration will blend in nicely.

Everything coming to Netflix in July

Five images: a young woman leaning against a locker, a man with a mustache, a young woman with close-shaven hair, a woman in Regency dress, a blood-spattered woman in a red jumpsuit.

Between the return of Stranger Things 4 and the release of The Gray Man, July is stacking up to be a pretty big month for Netflix.

The streaming service is also adding new series like the Lana Condor comedy Boo, Bitch and the video game adaptation Resident Evil. On the film side of things, look out for animated adventure The Sea Beast and Jane Austen adaptation Persuasion.

Here’s everything coming to Netflix in July.

Top pick: The Gray Man

To sell you on The Gray Man, all I have to do is list the cast: Chris Evans, Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas, Regé-Jean Page… Come on, that sounds like a solid ensemble right there. But The Gray Man has even more going for it: It’s directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, whose Marvel films have proven they can direct exciting action.

Netflix’s most expensive movie yet, The Gray Man is a thriller following the CIA’s most skilled operative (Gosling). When a villainous former colleague (Evans) puts a bounty on his head, he has to escape from the world’s most dangerous assassins.

How to watch: The Gray Man hits Netflix July 22.

How to change your Zoom background

Zoom

The results are in: The vast majority of people prefer to work remotely. And along with this rise in remote work, tech companies that help make telecommuting possible have blown up, too.

One particular company that’s benefitted from this all? The video conferencing service, Zoom.

With hundreds of millions of users, Zoom has been the standout in the move to remote work since the pandemic in 2020. Even as businesses and offices reopen, people continued to use Zoom to connect with coworkers for video meetings. Zoom has since expanded outside of the old-school business setting too with many podcasters, video makers, and livestreamers are now using the service to create content.

If you’re new to Zoom, that’s not a problem. The app is fairly straightforward and offers a pretty generous free plan to allow you to experiment. But, if you do happen to have a question about Zoom, it’s probably about its virtual background feature that everyone seems to love. It allows users to swap out their real-life background with an image or video while streaming with friends, family, and coworkers — no green screen required.

Here’s how to use Zoom’s virtual background feature:

Zoom Virtual Background Settings

  1. Download the Zoom Mac or Windows app.

  2. Open the application, sign in, and click your profile picture, followed by the Settings link in the drop-down menu.

  3. Head over to the Virtual Background tab. (If you do not see this tab, log in to the Zoom website, go to Meeting Settings, and make sure the Virtual Background button is toggled on under the Meeting tab.)

  4. In the Virtual Background tab, users can choose from pre-installed backgrounds or upload their own photos or videos.

  5. If you do have a green screen setup, select “I have a green screen” so the software can properly set up your background. If you do not have a green screen, Zoom recommends streaming from a location with a solid background color.

If you’re using Zoom from your iPhone or iPad, you can also change your background in the iOS app:

  1. Join a meeting, then click the More tab while you are logged into your account.

  2. Tap the Virtual Background option.

  3. Choose a background from the provided library or upload your own photos.

If you have an older computer or mobile device and are experiencing issues getting Zoom virtual backgrounds up and running, check out the system requirements to see if you can enable the virtual background feature.

It’s up to you to decide which exotic locale or classic movie scene to use as your background image. But if you’re looking for some free options to use, check out Zoom Backgrounds, a website set up precisely for that reason.

‘Wordle’ today: Get the answer, hints for June 22

Woman plays Wordle on her smartphone.

It is (nearly) Wednesday, my dudes, and that means a new Wordle is imminent. If you get stuck and start to get nervous about your streak, we’ve got some tips and hints to nudge you towards the solution every day.

You can skip to the very end of this article for the answer to the June 22 Wordle, #368 — or read on for a few tips and strategies to help you every day, and some subtle hints about today’s solution.

Wordle‘s sudden explosion at the end of 2021 led to a round of press focused on its creator. Former Reddit engineer Josh Wardle actually came up with the game in 2021 as a private exercise for him and his word game-loving partner. It eventually became a staple of their family WhatsApp messaging, and that’s when Wardle started to suspect he might have something special enough to merit a wider release.

Thousands of people around the globe now play this game each day, and fans have even created alternatives to Wordle inspired by the original format. This includes music identification game Heardle, Hollywood nerd faves Actorle and Framed, and variations like Dordle, Quordle, and the sixteen-word Sedecordle that make you guess multiple words at once

In fact, the word puzzle game has proved so popular that the New York Times eventually bought it, and TikTok creators livestream themselves playing.

Not the day you’re after? You’ll find the Wordle answer for June 21 here.

How does Wordle work? How do you do Wordle?

It works like this: When you visit the Wordle website, you’re greeted by 5-wide by 6-long grid of empty, white boxes. Each box can hold one letter, and so you guess at the answer by typing in a five-letter word and pressing ‘Enter’.

There aren’t any clues up front, so any five-letter word will do as an initial guess. That’s where the game of Wordle really starts. When you send a guess along, the color of each letter’s box changes.

  • If it turns green, that letter is in the daily word and you’ve placed it in the right spot.

  • If it turns yellow, the letter is in the word but you have it in the wrong position.

  • If the box turns grey, it means the letter isn’t in the word at all.

What’s the best Wordle starting word?

We have some ideas to help you pick the perfect first move (or as close to perfect as you can get without just magically guessing the exact right word). Such tips include choosing a word with at least two different vowels in it, plus a few common consonants such as S, T, R, or N.

What happened to the Wordle archive? Did the archive get taken down?

Yes, you used to be able to play the entire archive of past puzzles, but the archive was taken down at the request of the New York Times, according to the site.

Is Wordle getting harder?

If you’ve been finding Wordle too easy, there is a Hard Mode you can enable to give yourself more of a challenge. But unless you activate this mode, we can assure you that Wordle isn’t getting harder.

A subtle hint for the June 22 Wordle answer:

It’s a word with negative connotations.

Today’s Wordle is a 5-letter word that ends with…

The letter L!

‘Gone in the Night’ trailer shows Winona Ryder in twisty sci-fi thriller

Winona Ryder in

Sci-fi thriller Gone in the Night has dropped its official trailer, featuring Winona Ryder doggedly investigating a mystery in a very familiar fashion. If you enjoyed watching Ryder snoop around and look concerned in Stranger Things, this film might scratch that itch.

Previously titled The Cow, Gone in the Night follows the aftermath of a lovers’ getaway gone wrong, as Kath (Ryder) searches for an explanation behind her boyfriend Max’s (John Gallagher Jr.) disappearance. Her only lead is the young couple they encountered at the remote cabin they stayed at — specifically the woman (Brianne Tju) who Max supposedly ran off with.

Of course, from the looks of this trailer, the matter won’t be quite as simple as an absconding, unfaithful boyfriend.

Gone in the Night arrives July 15.

Elon Musk says he never told people to invest in crypto. Here’s what he has said.

Elon Musk and Dogecoin on a Bitcoin ATM

With the entire cryptocurrency market currently tanking and major crypto firms becoming insolvent, one would think Elon Musk might reflect on some of his recent statements with a little contrition. After all, Musk is a big proponent of cryptocurrency, right?

“I have never said that people should invest in crypto,” Elon Musk told the crowd during his virtual appearance at the Qatar Economic Forum after he was asked about the present state of cryptocurrency.

Musk continued. “In the case of Tesla, SpaceX, myself, we all did buy some Bitcoin, but it’s a small percentage of our total cash assets,” he said.

This appears to be true, technically. Musk does not seem to have ever uttered the words “people should invest in crypto” or any sort of similar straightforward investment recommendation regarding cryptocurrency.

So, where would people get the idea to invest in cryptocurrency because of Elon Musk then?

Musk has sure had a lot to say about cryptocurrencies over the years. And some of it has been quite promotional, so much so that it would be easy to see how someone would think Musk was offering investment advice. Or at least strongly hinting at such.

Most people with an interest in Musk consume his words on Twitter, where he is one of the platform’s top users, closing in on 100 million followers. Here’s a compilation of just some of the things Musk has said regarding cryptocurrencies on Twitter:

Let’s start with the time Elon Musk announced that his company, Tesla, would start accepting Bitcoin for vehicle purchases. Given that you have to buy Bitcoin to, well, spend it, and given that another way of saying “buy” is “invest in,” that seems rather promotional to me.

Musk later reversed course and suspended vehicle purchases via Bitcoin due to the negative environmental costs that were only later apparently explained to him.

But, Musk also felt the need to reiterate how much he still believed in crypto after his decision to suspend Tesla purchases with Bitcoin.

And, of course, Tesla isn’t the only Elon Musk company that promotes cryptocurrency.

Musk previously announced that SpaceX was going to launch a satellite literally named after the meme-inspired cryptocurrency, Dogecoin. The “mission” was also going to be paid for in Dogecoin as well as make history by making Dogecoin the “first crypto in space.”

Speaking of Dogecoin, it’s obvious the token is Musk’s favorite cryptocurrency as he’s plugged it more than any other crypto.

Here’s Musk simply stating “Dogecoin rulez.”

Here’s Musk plugging Dogecoin as the “people’s cryptocurrency.” In a follow-up he also explained to the “people” that there’s “no need to be a gigachad to own” Dogecoin.

Here’s Musk soliciting for developers to help build out Dogecoin.

This is Elon Musk saying he would “eat a happy meal on TV if McDonald’s accepts Dogecoin.” Again, people would need to acquire Dogecoin to use it!

And here’s his most recent plug of Dogecoin, tweeted during the big crypto crash which brought the crypto from its all-time high of 70 cents – which occurred when Elon Musk appeared on Saturday Night Live and plugged Dogecoin on network television – down to around five cents.

“I will keep supporting Dogecoin,” tweeted Musk.

When he was asked to keep buying by another Twitter user, he replied: “I am.”

And then there’s Elon Musk’s bizarre, not-so-subtle mentions of memecoins like Babydoge and Shiba Inu, both which pumped as a result of Musk’s Twitter shout outs.

Musk also appears to view crypto as a direct competitor to fiat currency and not just an investment vehicle.

To be fair, Musk has admitted that there are better things to invest in…even though he once again felt the need to hedge and share that he’s still bullish on cryptocurrency like Bitcoin and Dogecoin

But yes, after looking through Musk’s Twitter history, he does appear to be correct. He has never directly told people to invest in cryptocurrency.

So, remember, as Elon Musk would say: “Cryptocurrency is promising, but please invest with caution!”

Save $100: Building a new gaming PC setup on a budget? As of June 21, the Samsung CRG5 24-inch curved gaming monitor is $149.99 at Amazon, which matches its all-time lowest price.

A high-performance gaming PC or gaming laptop can be a hefty investment. But even with a limited budget for peripherals, you can still find an affordable gaming monitor that can keep up with the most powerful devices.

Complete your gaming station with the Samsung 24-inch CRG5 curved gaming monitor, which is on sale for $149.99 at Amazon. That’s $100 off and the best price we’ve seen on this monitor.

While the 24-inch display of the Samsung CRG5 sounds small, the curved design helps your experience feel immersive. It has a refresh rate of up to 144Hz along with AMD FreeSync to eliminate screen tearing and stuttering. It also provides a 3000:1 contrast ratio to offer deeper blacks and bright whites for additional image clarity.

Another helpful feature for gamers is its “eye saver” mode, which minimizes blue light and reduces eye strain during longer gaming sessions. And its flicker-free technology removes annoying screen flicker to better relax your eyes if you stay up all night playing Elden Ring again.

Get some free Amazon Prime Day credit when you see ‘Lightyear’ in theaters

Buzz Lightyear looking into the distance

TL;DR: As of June 21, you can get a $5 Amazon Prime Day credit with any purchase of Lightyear merch or a ticket to see the movie in theaters. Buy both a ticket and merch and you’ll get a $10 credit.

These days, plenty of people are heading back to theaters and remembering what it’s like to pay too much for popcorn in exchange for the ✨vibes✨.

To incentivize you to have such an outing, Amazon is offering a $5 Prime Day coupon to any Prime member who buys an Atom movie ticket to see Lightyear. Another $5 coupon is available for those who shop select Lightyear merch (ranging from themed UNO to action figures), so if you have kids who are a fan of the Space Ranger, you can buy them a toy and get $5 credit yourself.

Amazon’s offer is valid through Prime Day (July 12-13) and only available in limited quantities, so if you were planning on seeing Lightyear anyway, act fast and snag a coupon before they run out. The credit can only be used on Prime Day deals, but considering how many there typically are and the wide range (can anyone ever not find at least one thing they want on Amazon?), you’re probably going to be able to use your $5.
