Best 420-friendly dating sites for cannabis enthusiasts looking for love

Let’s face it: Dating is hard. Swiping endlessly on dating apps, blindly walking into a setup your friends assured you would be “perfect,” and waiting in vain to meet someone organically can sometimes be disheartening (to put it lightly). This is particularly true for those of us looking for a partner who’s chill with cannabis.

Sure, recreational weed hasn’t been legalized and/or decriminalized in every state, but you should be able to find someone with a mutual love for smoking a joint or enjoying an edible no matter where you live. (Life, and stoners, find a way.) That’s why we’ve scoured the web to find the best 420 dating sites and apps where you can connect with like-minded individuals who enjoy cannabis just as much as you do.

Whether you’ve had that super-awkward first date where you’ve suddenly become an unofficial criminal to the other person, or just want to skip the hassle of discussing it altogether, we’ve got you covered with a list of 420-friendly dating sites to make your search for a canna-lover as stress-free as possible. So, pack your favorite strain and get ready to meet your match.

Cannabis culture and 420-friendly dating in 2023

Before we introduce you to the world of 420-friendly dating, let’s take a second to look at some facts.

  • As of Aug 23, 2023, 21 states (as well as Washington, D.C. and Guam) have legalized recreational marijuana; Virginia and Minnesota will also legalize recreational weed in 2024 and 2025, respectively.

  • Approximately 88% of adults want to legalize weed. According to the Pew Research Center, 88% of U.S. adults favor legalizing marijuana for medical or recreational use. Only 10% of adults say it shouldn’t be legal at all.

  • Weed has the potential to improve your love life. In 2019, Match’s Singles in America survey revealed that smokers were 151% more likely to be dating someone when compared to nonsmokers. What’s more? Smokers were 109% more likely to have had multiple orgasms and had 3.6% more orgasms per sexual encounter.

More than filters: Finding a weed-friendly partner is easier than ever

By now, you’re probably thinking: This is great, but how do I find the right 420-friendly dating site for me? Luckily, there are unique dating sites designed specifically for this purpose — think High There! and My420Mate. If you’re more into the mainstream dating sites (we’re looking at you, match, and Zoosk), you can use filters built into the apps to find your ideal smoking buddy.

Some of the best 420-friendly dating apps even have filters specifically for weed users, making it super easy to find other stoners looking for love.

How much do weed-friendly dating sites cost?

Each site and app we mention below has a free version you can sign up for — though, these basic membership levels offer varying access to the apps’ features. However, if you’re serious about things, it can be worth shelling out the cash for premium membership tiers, which unlock more features that, in turn, should theoretically unlock more (or better) matches and, therefore, more dates. Price points exist for almost every budget, too, so you can choose the service that feels the best for you.

Here are the best dating sites for cannabis enthusiasts and 420-friendly singles looking for love in 2023.

UPDATE: Aug. 23, 2023, 4:20 p.m. EDT This article has been updated to reflect the Mashable team’s latest experiences with dating sites and apps. We selected a best overall option and removed two apps (Zoosk and EliteSingles) that weren’t providing good results for 420 singles.

PlayStation announces price and specs for Portal, its remote-play device

A rendering of the playstation portal

PlayStation has released more details about its remote-play device, the Portal — including its specs and price.

The portal will set you back $199.99. The device should deliver similar performance to playing on an actual PS5 console. It has adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, like PlayStation’s DualSense controllers, and features an 8-inch LCD screen that can deliver 1080p resolution at 60fps.

But there are a few catches. You need to have a PS5 to use the Portal because it’s just for remote play. It’s not a standalone unit such as the Nintendo Switch or the Steam Deck. You also need a WiFi connection to use the Portal because, again, it needs to connect to your PS5.

“PlayStation Portal is the perfect device for gamers in households where they might need to share their living room TV or simply want to play PS5 games in another room of the house,” said Hideaki Nishino, senior vice president of platform experience at Sony Interactive Entertainment in a blog post about the Portal. “PlayStation Portal will connect remotely to your PS5 over Wi-Fi, so you’ll be able to swiftly jump from playing on your PS5 to your PlayStation Portal.”

The Portal is neat looking and garnered generally positive reviews from a couple of outlets that got brief hands-on experience with it.

PlayStation did not announce when, exactly, the Portal will drop, saying only that it would “will launch later this year.”

10,000 feet down, scientists find ‘enormous’ octopus colony

an octopus garden in the deep sea.

In the lightless deep sea, an octopus settlement thrives atop a tranquil volcano.

Scientists at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute sent a deep ocean robot to an “octopus garden” located some 10,500 feet (3,200 meters) below the ocean’s surface, in a dark marine region dubbed the “midnight zone.” Here, the only natural light comes from glowing critters.

The deep sea scientists captured high-resolution imagery, shown below, on the recent journey to the Davidson Seamount, located far off the California coast. (More footage will be added as it becomes available.) They spotted a whopping 5,718 octopuses over a six-acre area, including 4,707 females nesting over their eggs.

The octopus species, M. robustus, might be drawn to the warmth at this specific location, the researchers speculate. Warm water still vents from the extinct volcano, perhaps speeding up the development of the growing embryos, a process that can take years in the profound cold of the deeps. The brooding females were “scattered across hydrothermal springs that emanated warmth, barely visible by the hazy, shimmering boundary between cold ambient seawater and warm venting fluid – like a mirage,” the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute wrote in a release. “Dead octopuses and lone embryos were quickly scavenged by other deep-sea species before being replaced by new arrivals.”

The deep sea research was published in the peer-reviewed journal Science Advances.

Deep sea exploration missions are vital. Scientists want to shine a light — literally and figuratively — on what’s down there. The implications of knowing are incalculable, particularly as deep-sea mineral prospectors prepare to run tank-like industrial equipment across parts of the seafloor. For example, research expeditions have found that ocean life carries great potential for novel medicines. “Systematic searches for new drugs have shown that marine invertebrates produce more antibiotic, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory substances than any group of terrestrial organisms,” notes the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Taylor Swift teases ‘Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version)’ in a new trailer

A still from the trailer for psychological thriller series 'Wilderness'

Taylor Swift, the mastermind, has given us the first hint of Reputation (Taylor’s Version) in the form of a snippet of “Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version).” The song appeared in the trailer for Amazon Prime Video’s new series, Wilderness.

This isn’t the first time Swift has debuted a re-recorded track in an advertisement. The yet-to-be-released “Wildest Dreams (Taylor’s Version)” debuted in the trailer for “Spirit Untamed,” “Love Story (Taylor’s Version)” was first heard in an ad for Match, and “Back to December (Taylor’s Version)” accompanied the trailer for The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2.

If there’s one thing we can be certain of it’s that Swift is always going to get that check.

In true Swiftian fashion, the timing lines up with the international leg of The Eras Tour kicking off tomorrow (August 24) in Mexico City.

In the trailer for Wilderness, “Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version)” soundtracks a series of ominous clips from a romantic roadtrip gone awry. Based on Where She Went by B.E. Jones, the UK original psychological thriller follows the revenge-stricken aftermath of the roadtrip.

Wilderness hits Amazon Prime Video on September 15.

Music makes family in this touching trailer for ‘Flora and Son’

A woman with a guitar walks on a street.

Writer/director John Carney — the brilliant mind who brought us Once and Sing Street — is back to warm hearts and yank tears with his latest musical drama, Flora and Son.

The film follows a single, working-class mom in Dublin who’s having trouble connecting with her increasingly rebellious teenage son. In a desperate attempt to reach Max (Orén Kinlan), Flora (Eve Hewson) pulls a guitar out of the trash as a gift for him, but when he rejects it, she decides to give it a whirl herself. It also doesn’t hurt that Eve’s virtual guitar teacher is a swoon-worthy dude across the ocean, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Though Max might not be a huge fan of the guitar, he is a big fan of music, just like his mom — he even makes his own beats, Flora discovers. What ensues is a touching tale of a mother and son finding unity in harmony, and a newfound understanding of each other blessed and borne from music.

Jack Reynor, who previously co-starred in Sing Street before his unforgettable turn in Midsommar, also appears as Eve’s ex, Ian.

How to watch: Flora and Son will premiere in select theaters on Sept. 22. It will then have its global premiere on Apple TV+ on Sept. 29

Wordle today: Here’s the answer and hints for August 23

Woman plays Wordle on her smartphone from the living room of her home receiving an 'Impressive' result using just three guesses

It’s Wednesday! And while the idea of Fyre Festival returning is a reality we’d rather not think about, the good news is there’s another Wordle puzzle to solve. We’re here for you, as we are every day, with some tips and tricks to help you figure out the solution.

If you just want to be told today’s answer, you can jump to the end of this article for August 23’s Wordle solution revealed. But if you’d rather solve it yourself, keep reading for some clues, tips, and strategies to assist you.

Where did Wordle come from?

Originally created by engineer Josh Wardle as a gift for his partner, Wordle rapidly spread to become an international phenomenon, with thousands of people around the globe playing every day. Alternate Wordle versions created by fans also sprang up, including battle royale Squabble, music identification game Heardle, and variations like Dordle and Quordle that make you guess multiple words at once.

Wordle eventually became so popular that it was purchased by the New York Times, and TikTok creators even livestream themselves playing.

Not the day you’re after? Here’s the Wordle answer for Aug 22.

What’s the best Wordle starting word?

The best Wordle starting word is the one that brings you the most joy. But if you like being strategic in your approach, we have a few ideas to help you pick a word that might help you find the solution faster. One tip is to select a word that includes at least two different vowels, plus some common consonants like S, T, R, or N.

What happened to the Wordle archive?

The entire archive of past Wordle puzzles used to be available for anyone to enjoy whenever they felt like it. Unfortunately, it has since been taken down, with the website’s creator stating it was done at the request of the New York Times.

Is Wordle getting harder?

It might feel like Wordle is getting harder, but it actually isn’t any more difficult than when it first began. You can turn on Wordle‘s Hard Mode if you’re after more of a challenge, though.

Why are there two different Wordle answers some days?

Though usually Wordle will only accept one correct solution per day, occasionally it has rebelled against the norm and deem two different answers acceptable. This is due to changes the New York Times made to Wordle after it acquired the puzzle game.

The Times has since added its own updated word list, so this should happen even less frequently than before. To avoid any confusion, it’s a good idea to refresh your browser before getting stuck into a new puzzle.

Here’s a subtle hint for today’s Wordle answer:

It’s a bittersweet symphony.

Does today’s Wordle answer have a double letter?

You’d better sit down. There’s two double letters today.

Today’s Wordle is a 5-letter word that starts with…

Today’s Wordle starts with the letter V.

‘Quordle’ today: Here are the answers and hints for August 23, 2023

A woman's hands holding a mobile phone playing 'Quordle'

If Quordle is a little too challenging today, you’ve come to the right place for hints. There aren’t just hints here, but the whole Quordle solution. Scroll to the bottom of this page, and there it is. But are you sure you need all four answers? Maybe you just need a strategy guide. Either way, scroll down, and you’ll get what you need.

What is Quordle?

Quordle is a five-letter word guessing game similar to Wordle, except each guess applies letters to four words at the same time. You get nine guesses instead of six to correctly guess all four words. It looks like playing four Wordle games at the same time, and that is essentially what it is. But it’s not nearly as intimidating as it sounds.

Is Quordle harder than Wordle?

Yes, though not diabolically so.

Where did Quordle come from?

Amid the Wordle boom of late 2021 and early 2022, when everyone was learning to love free, in-browser, once-a-day word guessing games, creator Freddie Meyer says he took inspiration from one of the first big Wordle variations, Dordle — the one where you essentially play two Wordles at once. He took things up a notch, and released Quordle on January 30. Meyer’s creation was covered in The Guardian six days later, and now, according to Meyer, it attracts millions of daily users. Today, Meyer earns modest revenue from Patreon, where dedicated Quordle fans can donate to keep their favorite puzzle game running.

How is Quordle pronounced?

“Kwordle.” It should rhyme with “Wordle,” and definitely should not be pronounced exactly like “curdle.”

Is Quordle strategy different from Wordle?

Yes and no.

Your starting strategy should be the same as with Wordle. In fact, if you have a favorite Wordle opening word, there’s no reason to change that here. We suggest something rich in vowels, featuring common letters like C, R, and N. But you do you.

After your first guess, however, you’ll notice things getting out of control if you play Quordle exactly like Wordle.

What should I do in Quordle that I don’t do in Wordle?

Solving a Wordle puzzle can famously come down to a series of single letter-change variations. If you’ve narrowed it down to “-IGHT,” you could guess “MIGHT” “NIGHT” “LIGHT” and “SIGHT” and one of those will probably be the solution — though this is also a famous way to end up losing in Wordle, particularly if you play on “hard mode.” In Quordle, however, this sort of single-letter winnowing is a deadly trap, and it hints at the important strategic difference between Wordle and Quordle: In Quordle, you can’t afford to waste guesses unless you’re eliminating as many letters as possible at all times.

Guessing a completely random word that you already know isn’t the solution, just to eliminate three or four possible letters you haven’t tried yet, is thought of as a desperate, latch-ditch move in Wordle. In Quordle, however, it’s a normal part of the player’s strategic toolset.

Is there a way to get the answer faster?

In my experience Quordle can be a slow game, sometimes dragging out longer than it would take to play Wordle four times. But a sort of blunt-force guessing approach can speed things up. The following strategy also works with Wordle if you only want the solution, and don’t care about having the fewest possible guesses:

Try starting with a series of words that puts all the vowels (including Y) on the board, along with some other common letters. We’ve had good luck with the three words: “NOTES,” “ACRID,” and “LUMPY.” YouTuber DougMansLand suggests four words: “CANOE,” “SKIRT,” “PLUMB,” and “FUDGY.”

Most of the alphabet is now eliminated, and you’ll only have the ability to make one or two wrong guesses if you use this strategy. But in most cases you’ll have all the information you need to guess the remaining words without any wrong guesses.

If strategy isn’t helping, and you’re still stumped, here are some hints:

Are there any double or triple letters in today’s Quordle words?

One word has a double letter.

Are any rare letters being used in today’s Quordle like Q or Z?

X.

What do today’s Quordle words start with?

C, A, C, and A.

What are the answers for today’s Quordle?

Are you sure you want to know?

There’s still time to turn back.

OK, you asked for it. The answers are:

  1. COAST

  2. AWOKE

  3. CLOTH

  4. ANNEX

Meta’s new AI model is a real-time translation expert

Meta graphic showing text to speech translation options for SeamlessM4T

Meta’s latest AI output is a major advancement for real-time text and speech translation.

On Tuesday, the company released SeamlessM4T: a multimodal model that translates text to speech and vice versa. Meta claims SeamlessM4T is “the first all-in-one multilingual multimodal AI translation and transcription model,” meaning it is uniquely able to translate and transcribe languages at the same time. SeamlessM4T can translate speech-to-text, speech-to-speech, text-to-speech, and text-to-text inputs for up to 100 languages. Translations for speech-to-speech and text-to-speech translations outputs support 35 languages.

A giant online book collection Meta used to train its AI is gone over copyright issues

Like other AI models recently released by Meta, including Llama 2 and AudioCraft, SeamlessM4T is publicly available for researchers and developers with a research license. Alongside the model, Meta is also releasing its training dataset called SeamlessAlign, which has 270,000 hours of speech and text alignments. Unlike OpenAI and Google, Meta has made a point of making its models open-source and publicly available. Meta’s approach of launching open-source models has the dual effect of enabling developers to build and improve the products, while also winning points amongst AI ethicists who are calling for transparency of generative AI systems.

Meta’s open-source approach may seem altruistic, but it’s a strategic power move in a ruthlessly competitive market against other big tech companies developing AI. There’s also the issue of data collection that all AI models must contend with. According to the blog post, SeamlessM4T’s dataset (SeamlessAlign) consists of publicly available data, there are ethical and legal issues surrounding use of copyrighted works and personal data without consent.

Meta’s announcement didn’t detail specific plans for SeamlessM4T, only hinting that it wants “to explore how this foundational model can enable new communication capabilities.” In other words, we might someday see a consumer-facing version of SeamlessM4T on WhatsApp or Instagram.
