Motorola patent reveals designs for a phone screen that heals itself

TwitterFacebook

Motorola wants to put an end to all those expensive smartphone screen repairs. The company recently applied for a patent on a phone screen that can heal its own cracks and damages.

SEE ALSO: Oh, how Motorola’s once mighty Moto X has fallen

The patent, which was filed in February and awarded last week, explains how a phone screen made out of shape memory polymer could heal itself. The screen would have “thermal elements” in it that could detect deformations in the screen. Then heat would be applied to the memory polymer screen as the solution to reversing the damage that has been done.

A new Motorola patent application shows a self-healing screen.

What’s better than a beautiful desk lamp? A beautiful desk lamp that’s also a plant, of course

Grasslamp is the brainchild of Serbian designer Marko Vuckovic, and it’s exactly what it sounds like: a minimalist, ovular lamp with a small, living garden growing in its center.

SEE ALSO: This giant puzzle of a CMYK gradient may be the hardest we’ve ever seen

Using hydroponic technology, this unique, luminescent structure can support up to 40 different micro-greens, without any soil or fertilizer. Simply spray your greens with water a few times a day, and your vegetation will blossom in about two weeks. Meanwhile, 90 LEDs in the lamp provide 15 lumens of refreshing, peaceful light that is sure to brighten up your home or office

Begin growing your greens at home or at work today, by ordering the Valsfer Grasslamp for $197—50 percent off the regular price of $399. If you want to learn more about it, there’s a (kind of dramatic) video about the product’s inception here: Read more…

Instrumments 01 might be the best way to measure anything on the fly

TwitterFacebook

How things measure up is pretty important to us. We don’t just look at objects, we automatically scale them in our minds, guessing about width, height, and how they might fit in our world.

We make these assumptions because few of us carry rulers in our back pockets (where would we put our phones?), and you better be a Property Brother if you’re in the habit of carrying a tape measures on your belt.

If only there was a subtler way to have the power of dimensioning in your pocket.

That’s the simple idea behind the Instrumments 01, a pen-sized, laser-powered measurement stick.

The $149 version, which I tested, also doubles as a retractable pen (there’s a pen-free $99 version), so there’s even more reason to always have 01 with you. Read more…

New Girl Scout badges go where Girl Scouts have never been before: Space

The Girl Scouts of the USA has been turning out smart future leaders of America for the past century. Those girls and young women have collected countless badges for activities related to art, science, the outdoors, leadership and more. ‘Game of Thrones’ fan has an epic theory about what’s in store for Bronn

TwitterFacebook

Warning: Spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 7, episode 5.

I’m not going to lie, I’m kind of surprised Bronn’s still around.

He’s obviously an awesome character, but I genuinely thought he was going to snuff it during that loot train attack. Especially after he made the mistake of attempting to kill Drogon.

He’s still here, though, and he now has more MVP points than ever before.

So how are things going to pan out for the former sellsword?
