This city is letting people try out self-driving cars for free

TwitterFacebook

If you’re visiting Arlington, Texas, and have been itching to try out an autonomous vehicle, you’re in luck.

Starting Friday, three Drive.ai self-driving cars (and eventually five) will be available to ride — for anyone, not just office workers, city officials, or a select group of “early riders.” Back in July, Drive.ai piloted the autonomous Nissan NV200 vans in Frisco, Texas. The Arlington deployment will be around for the next year.

“This is a not a quick demonstration,” CEO Bijit Halder said in a phone call this week.

If you’re interested, you can download the Drive.ai app or order a car from a kiosk at five pickup points. The cars are taking passengers along three routes that hit the Dallas Cowboys stadium, the Texas Rangers ballpark, the Arlington Convention Center, restaurant districts, and other venues.  Read more…

Facebook’s fight against fake news is actually working. Sort of.

TwitterFacebook

Facebook’s promise to fight fake news is finally starting to work. Well, sort of. It depends on where you look.

Almost two years after the company vowed to start taking its fake news problem seriously, some of those efforts are beginning to pay off, even if things aren’t moving nearly fast enough for some.

The social network has introduced a new series called “The Hunt for False News,” which includes specific examples of widely shared fake news on the platform.

It’s partly a status update on the company’s efforts to fight misinformation and partly an effort at instilling a bit more media literacy in users (assuming they think to check Facebook’s official blog posts in the first place). The initial post provides three examples of fake news stories that have made the rounds on Facebook over the last several months: Read more…

Lime’s new e-scooter will tell you where you can’t park

TwitterFacebook

Lime has some new wheels.

The company’s Generation 3 e-scooter is more tech-savvy and sturdy than the last model. It’s coming out in some cities next month and will roll out to every city Lime operates in (currently more than 100) in early 2019.

The new scooter has bigger wheels, a wider body, and a better suspension system and braking. But it’s the 2.8-inch color screen that will hopefully help cities with its scooter problems, like blocked walkways and cluttered entryways to businesses.

The display shows your speed and battery capacity, but it can also share riding safety tips, like wear a helmet or only one person per scooter. (If only it could tell you not to hack your scooter to look like this or this.)  Read more…

This absurd parody proves that all TED Talks really do sound the same

TwitterFacebook

It’s not just you: A lot of TED Talks sound the same.

Comedian and writer Keaton Patti — who imagined what a White House press briefing written by a bot might sound like — just shared a new imagined bot script, this time parodying the language of lofty TED Talks.

The “visibly clothed” TED TALKER opens the bizarrely inspirational lecture — given in a “place where you can talk” — with an anecdote about his or her grandfather, who was “paid for for being old.”

“He told me there’s just enough plastic in the ocean for someone to marry,” the TED TALKER states. “But we’re almost out of time.” The audience doesn’t care much about the actual TED Talk, but are insistent that they be shown graphs. Read more…

OnePlus 6T launch date moved because of Apple iPad event

TwitterFacebook

Everyone knows OnePlus as the scrappy Chinese company that makes flagship Android phones and sells them for hundreds of dollars less than, say, Samsung’s Galaxy phones or Google’s Pixels.

OnePlus’s highly anticipated next-generation flagship phone, the 6T, was originally supposed to launch on Oct. 30, but now the company has moved the event date to Oct. 29, no doubt because another tech behemoth is also holding a product launch event on Oct. 30. (We’re looking at you Apple.)
