The New York Times’ election needle is broken and people are jonesing hard

TwitterFacebook

The New York Times‘ election needle failure may be the healthiest possible outcome for our collective mental health.

The infamous needle sparked deep-seated anxiety and ignited endless rage during the 2016 presidential election, when it perilously oscillated before settling on Trump’s victory. Ahead of the midterm elections this year, people were outspoken about how much that damn needle stressed them out.

“When the Needle whirs to life like the smoke monster in Lost, chances are you’ve already cast your vote, you’ve worked the rest of your day in the office, stress-eating whatever baked goods come your way.” The latest from @oureric: https://t.co/xCzrlApIad

Why America is using glitchy electronic voting machines

TwitterFacebook

It’s been 18 years and several thousand lifetimes since the contested Bush-Gore presidential elections of 2000. Yet “hanging chads” are still haunting us — but not in the way you might think.

Since states began introducing electronic voting machines and other technology in the voting process, digitizing various aspects of voting has been a boon for democracy in many ways. Online voter registration has supercharged get-out-the-vote efforts. ID scanning at check-ins helps reduce lines. And, of course, ballots submitted digitally allow for near instantaneous returns.

This election night Photoshop battle imagines wild political agendas

TwitterFacebook

Election night 2018 has only just begun in earnest, but the memes are already here.

Among them, unsurprisingly, is a Photoshop battle. It began when Jordan Uhl tweeted CNN screenshots featuring two blank lists: the “liberal agenda” if Democrats win big tonight and the “GOP agenda” if Republicans come out on top.

“Let’s have some fun,” he wrote. “Send me your best ones.” That seems like a tall order, since having fun seems fairly impossible these days, but people did make some really good jokes. Think “think is the future liberals want,” but weirder because everyone is stressed out. Read more…

This is what happens when an e-bike company makes an electric car

TwitterFacebook

Biomega is known for its electric bicycles, but this week the Danish company revealed a new product: SIN, a minimalist electric concept car.

The car is the ultimate city-mobile with a minimal aesthetic (and we mean minimal). It features four stripped back seats and lightweight materials throughout. It barely has doors — where a traditional door would be is glass. The roof is a continuation of the front windshield. The inside of the car is pretty much bare with a flat floor.

Here’s a look at the vehicle.

With a lighter car, the battery range is supposed to improve since less power is consumed to move it. The concept car’s battery weighs 440 pounds. For comparison, a Tesla Model 3 battery weighs more than 1,000 pounds. Read more…

Your voting selfie really does make a difference. Here’s how.

TwitterFacebook

Everyone loves to dump on selfies. Either they’re “too narcissistic” or have caused “hundreds of fatal injuries all around the world.”

But not all selfies are built alike. Think of the humble “I voted” selfie, popping up on everyone’s social media feed this month, and especially on Election Day. In a democracy in which close to half the eligible voters choose not to vote, the “I voted” selfie has real potential to mobilize disaffected voters.

So go for it: Rock the selfie, everyone.

The “I voted” selfie isn’t the sexiest. Unlike traditional selfies, they generally don’t include pouty lips or dramatic mountain backdrops. “I voted” selfies are traditionally set in church basements or cinder block public schools. They almost always feature an “I voted” sticker and are often crushingly corny. Read more…

Garfield the cat just pissed off a bunch of people on Election Day

TwitterFacebook

The midterm elections have outdone themselves in terms of absurdity thanks to Garfield, the cartoon cat whose comic strip hasn’t been funny since President Ronald Reagan left the White House.

Yes, Garfield, the cat who loves lasagna and hates Mondays, is apparently apathetic about whether or not you vote, according to a post on the comic strip character’s Instagram account. Now people are arguing that Garfield’s gone full Melania online.
