NASA’s new flying robot gets its first hardware check in space

TwitterFacebook

NASA’s new robot is getting ready for work.

Astrobee, a free-flying robot system that’s designed to give astronauts a hand in space, has had its first hardware checks on the International Space Station.

The system is actually a trio of robots, named Honey, Queen, and Bumble, which are propelled by electric fans and can return to their docking station to recharge their batteries. Two of the robots, Bumble and Honey, were launched to the space station on Apr. 17.

NASA posted a photo of astronaut Anne McClain, who performed the first series of tests on Astrobee, which included checking the robot’s avionics, cameras, propulsion, and docking for power and data transfer. Read more…

That ‘Game of Thrones’ coffee cup has made it to ‘Skyrim’

TwitterFacebook

It’s one of the most prolific accidental cameos in TV history: the rogue coffee cup from Game of Thrones.

HBO may have edited out the mistake, but thanks to two clever mods, the diabolical caffeine receptacle’s memory lives on in Skyrim.

Reported by Kotaku, a mod built for Bethesda’s beloved Elder Scrolls game allows you to replace tankards with the dastardly coffee cup.

As the publisher points out, the request was made in jest on Friday by player DarkMaster06 who asked the Skyrim mods subreddit for a cheeky addition to the great palace in the game’s city of Whiterun.

“Based on the Game of Thrones series, we should add a Starbucks cup to Dragonsreach,” they said. Read more…

Google severed Huawei’s access to key Android apps and services

TwitterFacebook

Be nervous if you’re a Huawei customer.

Google has reportedly stopped doing business with the Chinese tech company behind the P-series and Mate-series smartphones. Functionally, the revoked Android license means delayed Google updates and, for Huawei’s future devices, no access to apps like Gmail or the Play Store.

Google confirmed the report on Saturday evening. “We are complying with the order and reviewing the implications,” a company spokesperson wrote in an email. Reuters first reported the news via unnamed sources on Sunday afternoon, and The Verge followed up a couple hours later with — again, anonymously sourced — confirmation. Read more…

Race horse loses rider but wins our hearts by racing without him

TwitterFacebook

They’re calling him a dark horse, but we see nothing but a bright beacon of what perseverance in the face of adversity looks like.

At the Preakness Stakes show Saturday on Baltimore’s Pimlico Race Course, the take-no-sh*t horse named Bodexpress bucked off his rider before even leaving the gate. But he wasn’t gonna let the split on the account of their creative differences keep him from doing what he does best: racing his goddamn heart out.

Embodying the #resistance movement, Bodexpress persisted, completing the entire race without his jockey.

‘Game of Thrones’ Weekly: There are no big conversations ahead of the last episode

TwitterFacebook

Game of Thrones ends tonight, May 19. After eight seasons, we’ve reached the last episode ever. Why is there so little to talk about?

It’s fair to say that Season 8 has not gone very well, whether you’re a fan or someone with a professional connection to the show. Fans expected more from what has until the past two seasons been a deeply layered story of court intrigue and bloody revenge. And while we don’t know what HBO and company expected, it certainly wasn’t..this.

The sense of disappointment has upended a fan community that has been propelled for almost a decade by a commitment to crafting theories about where things are headed. Where once the Game of Thrones subreddit bustled with plot speculation, now it vacillates between relentless dragging, heartfelt goodbyes, internet weirdness, and fan creations. Read more…

Here’s what critics had to say about ‘Star Wars: The Phantom Menace’ in 1999

TwitterFacebook

Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace hit theaters 20 years ago, on May 19, 1999, and to celebrate we’re looking back at early reactions from critics on the movie that turned the original Star Wars trilogy into something much larger, and in many fans’ eyes, much worse.

While The Phantom Menace is now generally regarded in some parts of the fan community as the worst film in the franchise and kind of a terrible film all around, it took a lot of people a good amount of time to come to that conclusion. Some critics were smitten by the admittedly kid-centric entry in the franchise while others wrote it off right from the start. Read more…

Emilia Clarke posts a touching goodbye to ‘Game of Thrones’

TwitterFacebook

The journey may not have ended as we might’ve hoped for our Mother of Dragons. But Emilia Clarke is still our Khaleesi to the bitter end.

On Instagram, the Game of Thrones actress wrote a tearful goodbye to the show that launched her career and made her practically family with the cast and crew over eight seasons. Like many of us, she seems at a loss for words to describe the totality of emotions she’s feeling on the eve of its end.

View this post on Instagram

Finding the words to write this post has left me overwhelmed with how much I want to say but how small words feel in comparison to what this show and Dany have meant to me. The mother of dragons chapter has taken up the whole of my adult life. This woman has taken up the whole of my heart. I’ve sweated in the blaze of dragon fire, shed many tears at those who left our family early, and wrung my brain dry trying to do Khaleesi and the masterful words, actions (and names) I was given, justice. Game of Thrones has shaped me as a woman, as an actor and as a human being. I just wish my darling dad was here now to see how far we’ve flown. But to you, dear kind magical fans, I owe you so much thanks, for your steady gaze at what we’ve made and what I’ve done with a character that was already in the hearts of many before I slipped on the platinum wig of dreams. Without you there is no us. And now our watch has ended. @gameofthrones @hbo #love #motherofdragonsoverandout Read more…

Guy wearing red tie becomes a meme after witnessing a brutal knockout punch

TwitterFacebook

You never know when you might become a meme.

During a hard-hitting match between heavyweight boxers Deontay Wilder and Dominic Breazeale Friday night, Wilder landed a nasty right hook on the jaw of Breazeale in the first round, sending him to the ground in a daze. That knockout punch garnered quite the reaction from spectators, but one guy in particular made the most perfect face.

The man in the front row with the red tie was astounded. Wide-eyed and open-mouthed in shock, he looks like he’s just seen a god appear on Earth.
