Watch: Jeff Bezos rushed by protester on stage at re:Mars conference

TwitterFacebook

Shed no tears for Jeff Bezos.

The Platonic ideal of an out-of-touch rich man was slightly inconvenienced Thursday when a protester confronted the billionaire king on stage at Amazon’s re:Mars conference in Las Vegas.

The protester, who was quickly ushered off stage, addressed the CEO directly. The audio is a little rough, but it sounds like she’s asking Bezos to commit to stopping Amazon’s alleged engagement in animal cruelty.

“Jeff, please,” she can be heard saying. “You’re the richest man on this planet, you can help the animals.”

Bezos, meanwhile, laughed it off. “Do you have a response for that,” he asked the interviewer — to a hearty laugh from the Las Vegas crowd.  Read more…

What’s going on with the flying, 80-mile-wide beetle swarm?

TwitterFacebook

A sprawling crowd of lady beetles buzzed over Southern California this week, making a striking appearance on National Weather Service radar.

The event, which transpired at night on June 4, shows a cloud of lady beetles, colloquially called “ladybugs,” flying south over the high desert. The millions upon millions of flying creatures occupied an area some 80 miles by 80 miles of sky, in varying degrees of concentration.

“The size of that is bewildering,” said Tim Kring, who heads the department of entomology at Virginia Tech University and has researched lady beetles for decades.

“It’s certainly within the realm of possibility considering the time of year, where it is, and what they’re doing,” he said. Read more…

Elon Musk says Tesla cars could eventually support third-party apps and games

TwitterFacebook

If Elon Musk says it’s a possibility, it’s a possibility.

During a conversation on the everything Tesla-related Ride the Lightning podcast that aired over the weekend, the Tesla CEO touched on the potential for the electric cars’ infotainment system to support third-party games and apps.

Tesla cars currently offer Tesla-only services for streaming music, books, podcasts, navigation tools and maps, and even gaming on its dashboard screens. A digital Easter egg drawer is full of in-car video games and other features, like the giggle-inducing fart mode.

Patty Jenkins unveils new ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ poster

TwitterFacebook

We won’t be getting a big Wonder Woman 1984 panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, but director Patty Jenkins was happy to share the film’s poster with fans on Twitter as consolation.

By now you’ve heard: WB isn’t going to Hall H this year. We’re so sad to miss you there! And waiting until Dec. to start our official #WW84 campaign in full—  But the truth is… we can just… barely… wait… pic.twitter.com/QllFzhYRA6

— Patty Jenkins (@PattyJenks) June 5, 2019

The poster leans gleefully into psychedelic ’80s colors, so if you had any suspicion WW84 would be rife with nostalgia, consider it confirmed (honestly, the early stills tipped us off)! Though Wonder Woman is still in her signature gold, this costume does away with the red midsection and blue skirt piece — opting instead for thigh-high boots, which, yes. It also appears to have sleeves and a collar, which are far more practical for say, England. Read more…

Chilling survey links party affiliation and belief in ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ reality

TwitterFacebook

Your Handmaid’s Tale opinions could have a lot more to do with the 2020 presidential election than you think.

A new survey, conducted by Morning Consult and The Hollywood Reporter prior to the Handmaid’s Season 3 premiere on Wednesday, indicates viewer opinion on the realism of Gilead’s totalitarian regime may be strongly linked to political party affiliation.

The survey, which polled 2,201 adult viewers from May 31 – June 2, asked participants to choose between two statements, selecting the one they agreed with more: “The dystopia shown in The Handmaid’s Tale is grounded in truth and could become reality someday” or “The dystopia shown in The Handmaid’s Tale capitalizes on people’s irrational fears and won’t become a reality.” Read more…
