How to donate your credit card points or reward miles to charity

TwitterFacebook

If you have a rewards credit card, and specifically sought out a card with super cool perks, it’s likely that you have a stockpile of miles or points sitting in your account. While you can usually tap into those points for travel or cash back, another option allows you to donate your rewards to a favorite charity.

Unlike a monetary donation to a charity using your credit card, where a small processing charge is taken out of your gift, in most cases donating your rewards ensures your nonprofit of choice gets the full value of your donation. (If you want to read about how to use a credit card to help offset your carbon footprint, check out this story we did.)  Read more…

Hot Girl Summer is over. Here are some name suggestions for fall.

TwitterFacebook

With Labor Day behind us, Hot Girl Summer is coming to an end and fall is fast approaching.

It’s time to leave behind the White Claw and pick up a pumpkin-flavored beverage, to snap closed the sunscreen bottles and light a comforting pie-scented candle, and perhaps most importantly, it’s time to name the new season.

It’s 2019, and a successful Hot Girl Summer simply must be followed by something that sounds more exciting than plain old “fall” or “autumn.”

Twitter users are having quite the pre-season brainstorm to come up with a new name for the chilly, foliage-filled season, and should most definitely take part, too. Read more…

Scamming in ‘World of Warcraft’ taught me teenage confidence

TwitterFacebook

It’s Cheat Week at Mashable. Join us as we take a look at how liars, scammers, grifters, and everyday people take advantage of life’s little loopholes in order to get ahead.

Ten years ago I was a World of Warcraft sugar baby.

I coasted through the game by pretending that behind the hot Night Elf huntress, I was a confident 21-year-old woman instead of a clumsy 13-year-old who once panic-cried over ordering pizza because talking on the phone crushed me with anxiety. My nascent and short-lived grifting never reached its full potential — mostly because I wasn’t allowed online after 9 p.m. — but the year I spent exploiting my character’s violet body for valuable in-game gold toed the line between shared fantasy and catfishing.  Read more…

‘Steven Universe: The Movie’ admits Rose has been the villain all along

TwitterFacebook

When the first season of Steven Universe aired on Cartoon Network, the charming, inclusive story of a half-human, half-alien boy whose mysterious, beautiful mother Rose Quartz saved the planet thousands of years ago seemed like a fairly simple story. Much of Steven’s early journey involves understanding his mother’s legacy and in trying to live up to who he thought she was — the predominant thought being that she is a war hero and a savior to all life on earth.

Later episodes introduced complications to this narrative around Rose Quartz, and Steven Universe’s willingness to challenge what could have been a straightforward tale of a boy living up to his celestial legacy instead turned out to be an often twisted tale of Steven learning that his hero mom was not the kind of person he should look up to at all.  Read more…

Trans Twitter turns bigoted tweet into a parody meme

TwitterFacebook

It never seems to get any easier to come out as trans. Even with growing visibility in the media, and a new generation of young LGBTQ folk who feel more open and secure in their identities, it’s still hard to come out. So what can you do but laugh?

The trans community are masters of meme-ing in order to shut down bigots and cope with everyday microaggressions. But you’ll still find people like Blaire White who grab the fear-mongering megaphone by the hand, and proceed to arrange words in any order they desire for their own gain.

White is a YouTuber and self-identified “transgender conservative commentator.” Despite her identity, White is a controversial figure due to her connection to far-right movements and belief that trans identity being a mental disorder.  Read more…

Huawei alleges U.S. government launched ‘cyber attacks’ against it

TwitterFacebook

Huawei is pissed off.

The Chinese telecommunications company issued a direct rebuke to allegations that it had stolen smartphone camera patents, and in the process accused the U.S. government of launching “cyber attacks” against it. The claim is one of many made in a Tuesday press release, and heightens an already tense relationship between the company and U.S. authorities.

Huawei insists that, in addition to pushing other countries to ban its products, the U.S. government “has been using every tool at its disposal – including both judicial and administrative powers, as well as a host of other unscrupulous means — to disrupt the normal business operations of Huawei and its partners.” Read more…
