The internet is casting its own ‘Knives Out’ movie

Photos of Keke Palmer, Jack Black, and Jennifer Coolidge

If you haven’t seen Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, I won’t spoil it. I did plenty of that in my explanation of what the film says about Elon Musk. But let’s just say the cast did a fantastic job.

That’s become a hallmark of a Knives Out movie. There’s Daniel Craig as detective Benoit Blanc, a compelling mystery story, and a cast loaded with stars. The latest film, Glass Onion, featured Craig, Janelle Monáe, Kate Hudson, Edward Norton, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Dave Bautista, and Madelyn Cline, among other fun cameos.

With Glass Onion finally available to stream on Netflix, folks are already moving on to the next installment in their minds. People really want to cast this movie. And frankly, some people on the internet have some really good ideas.

For instance, now I NEED Jack Black in a Knives Out film. He’d absolutely ham it up to the perfect campy degree.

Ditto with Jennifer Coolidge.

For all those steeped in the drama within the Don’t Worry Darling extended universe, this is a perfect idea.

There are so, so, so many great suggestions online.

It’s fun to dream cast new Knives Out films for a few reasons. Of course, one reason is that any actor is a reasonable get. Chris Evans, Kate Hudson, Ana De Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ed Norton, Janelle Monáe have all said yes to these movies. And both installments were well-received by critics and audiences. So, presumably, lots of stars would sign on for the third movie.

But it’s also fun to dream cast these movies because director Rian Johnson really lets the actors cook in his films. They are full of camp and fun. Glass Onion shows that. Craig is a hammy revelation. Hudson is dialing it up to 11. Hahn steals every scene.

Johnson’s deal with Netflix guarantees we’ll get at least one more Knives Out mystery, and the writer-director has expressed interest in going even bigger in the future. Craig has said he’ll play Blanc as long as he’s asked, but the rest it up to our imagination.

Get $50 toward Amazon for free: As of Dec. 27, buying a year of Microsoft 365 Family at Amazon scores you a free $50 Amazon gift card. With the 12-month subscription going for $99.99, it’s an indirect savings of 50%.

Every household has that list of core subscription services that are built into the budget without a second thought.

If Microsoft 356 Family is on your list, renewing for the next year at Amazon could indirectly end up paying for a few months’ worth of Disney+ or Netflix. The yearly service, still $99.99 like it is on Microsoft’s website, comes with a free $50 Amazon gift card — a circuitous savings of 50% when you use that free $50 on another purchase.

That savings could cover, say, a recurring streaming service fee for five or six months. (The gift card is a physical one that comes in the mail, so it can be a post-holiday surprise when you almost definitely forget that it was coming.)

Microsoft 365 Family unlocks the big Office apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook for six people, whether that’s a family with kids and parents who use them at school and work or a small business team. 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage is also included for editing and sharing files or photos with others on the account.

The service doubles as parental control software. Access to the Microsoft Family Safety app gives users access to advanced safety features like location tracking, screen time limits, web and app content filters, and drive safety reports.

How scientists might find life on a moon of Saturn while skipping the hardest part

NASA Cassini flying over Enceladus

Researchers believe they may be able to suss out whether microscopic aliens exist on one of Saturn’s 83 moons without having to land a spaceship there.

Enceladus — about 800 million miles away and 25 times smaller than Earth — has captured the imaginations of planetary scientists searching for life beyond the blue marble. The Saturn moon shoots geyser-like plumes containing bits of water and gas from its ocean into space. That constant spray creates a halo, which contributes to one of Saturn’s rings.

Scientists have pushed NASA to endorse future missions to explore the world, requesting financial support to land on its surface. One such proposal, the Enceladus Orbilander designed by Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Maryland, would study it from the moon’s ground — as well as from space — over a 1.5-year period beginning in the 2050s. The complex mission would cost an estimated $2.5 billion, according to The Planetary Society, a nonprofit focused on advancing space science.

Now a research group led from the University of Arizona has laid out a proposal for an approach that’s relatively simple, suggesting that all scientists would need to determine whether microbes live under Enceladus’ icy shell is an orbiting space probe. The study was published in The Planetary Science Journal this December.

“Our research shows that if a biosphere is present in Enceladus’ ocean, signs of its existence could be picked up in plume material without the need to land or drill,” said Antonin Affholder, the lead author, in a statement, “but such a mission would require an orbiter to fly through the plume multiple times to collect lots of oceanic material.”

Just how many times? Perhaps over 100 flybys, according to the paper.

To discover the presence of alien life, the research team has turned the problem on its head: Rather than trying to answer how much organic material would have to be found to prove that life is there, they are focusing on the maximum amount of organic material that could be present without life.

When Enceladus was first studied in 1980 by NASA’s Voyager 1 probe, it didn’t appear as much more than a little snowball. More recently, researchers have learned that the moon’s thick layer of ice conceals a warm saltwater ocean, spewing methane, a gas that usually comes from bacteria and other microorganisms on Earth. Between 2005 and 2017, NASA’s crewless Cassini spacecraft flew through Saturn’s rings and moons, revealing an abundance of new information.

Last year a collaboration between the University of Arizona and Université Paris Sciences et Lettres in Paris calculated that microbial life forms on Enceladus could be what’s causing the moon to burp methane.

“signs of its existence could be picked up in plume material without the need to land or drill.”

The possibility that actual cells would be detected might be slim, because they would have to survive the journey of ejection from deep within an ocean into the vacuum of space. The team of scientists say organic molecules, such as certain amino acids, would serve instead as evidence to support or rule out habitation.

If measurements came back above a certain threshold, it would make a strong case that microbes live on Enceladus.

But, Affholder said: “The definitive evidence of living cells caught on an alien world may remain elusive for generations.”

Blizzard webcams show America adapting to the devastating cold and snowfall

A snowplow plowing in Buffalo, NY

A Christmastime winter storm pummeled much of North America over the weekend, leaving 25 dead in the area around Eerie County, New York — which includes Buffalo — and entire communities buried under several feet of snow. In addition to snowed-in conditions in the Buffalo area, the storm was exacerbated by a larger cold weather trend, with snowfall and precipitation stretching across much of the United States and Canada.

Today (Monday) sees the country attempting to return to some semblance of business as usual. Thankfully, the holiday timing of the disastrous weather is sparing millions of people the need to commute to-and-from work in these conditions. Nonetheless, road crews are busy digging the country out of this snow.

It can all be seen on webcams, most of which had been set up prior to the storm for other purposes. Today, however, they show storm-battered communities coping with the blizzard, clearing crucial infrastructure, and cautiously getting back on the road.

Here’s a round up of winter webcams around the country:

Watertown, New York is coming back to life amid the snow

This normally placid view of a harbor on Lake Coeur d’Alene in northern Idaho currently (as of this writing) shows snow continuing to fall, and dark clouds continuing to pass overhead. Typically allowing a peek at conditions and activity on the lake for boaters and other vacationers, this camera instead shows the extent of the storm, which is dispersed across the entire country.

The winter views are incredible in snowy Washington state

This storm has been a tragic reminder of the devastating power of winter weather. However, this view of Leavenworth, Washington, in the Cascade Mountains, is a reminder of winter’s austere beauty. For the moment, the town’s Bavarian Village actually offers more astonishing snowy vista’s than Bavaria itself.

A note about climate change and winter storms

Importantly, intense winter freezes will still happen in a heating world. Earth is heating relentlessly, and winter is the fastest-warming season, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration data compiled by Climate Central, an independent organization that researches climate change. But dynamic weather moving through our profoundly chaotic atmosphere will frequently still have opportunities to spill Arctic air into the Lower 48. (Originally published on Mashable here).

Christmas Day has come and gone, and that means it’s time to snag a present for yourself (for cheap) in Australia’s infamous Boxing Day Sales. And, now that it’s 2022, forget the old days of traveling to the inner city to wade through huge crowds. You can score the best Boxing Day deals online, right now!

What is Boxing Day?

Boxing Day is the day after Christmas (December 26), and is a public holiday in Australia. Boxing Day Sales have been a thing in Australia since the 1980s. It was a chance for retailers to quickly sell off their excess inventory from the Christmas season, and traditionally involved a trip into the city, hours of queuing and navigating big crowds. Thankfully, these days you can save yourself a trip and snag a great Boxing Day deal online.

When is Boxing Day in 2022?

Boxing Day falls on Monday, December 26, the day after Christmas (December 25). However, early deals begin to pop up throughout this week leading up to Christmas, and stay online the week following. For example, Amazon Australia’s early Boxing Day deals have already kicked off.

What are the best items to buy on Boxing Day?

The Boxing Day Sales are a great time to score sizable discounts on big-ticket items like laptops, Hi-Fi, consoles and TVs. Online tech retailers will getting rid of stock to make space for the 2023 season, so keep an eye on stores like Amazon, The Good Guys, Bing Lee and Ebay. It’s also worth keeping an eye out specifically for the following products:

  • Appliances: Expect tech and white good retailers like The Good Guys and Bing Lee to go big this Boxing Day, dropping prices on pretty much all stock. This means it’s a great time to find good deals on big items like fridges, freezers, washing machines, as well as the small ones like kettles, toasters and more.

  • Games consoles: Console availability in Australia has been a challenge over the past few years, but things have definitely improved the last few months with PS5s and Xbox Series Xs readily available on Amazon and in gaming retailers. Boxing Day will no doubt bring some great prices on console accessories and games, and even on consoles if we’re lucky!

  • Smartphones: Amazon offers some pretty impressive deals on smartphones the whole year around, and some of these prices should be even lower for Boxing Day.

  • Toys: While many of the in-demand toys will be sold out from Christmas, any left over will be up for grabs! We recommend checking out Amazon for the best deals on Lego, especially for the massively popular Star Wars and Harry Potter sets.

  • TVs: We expect all of the leading retailers to offer some hefty deals on remaining TV stock from top brands like Samsung, Hisense, Sony, LG and Panasonic. It’s worth shopping around for the best TV deals, but you’ll likely have the best chances on The Good Guys, Bing Lee or Kogan.

  • Security and VPNs: Off the back of the recent Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, security companies will again be dropping their prices for Boxing Day – especially to Australians. If you need to renew your cybersecurity or VPN for the upcoming year, now is a great time.

‘Glass Onion’ almost included Janelle Monáe and Edward Norton covering David Bowie

A woman in a black and white dress stands in a garden.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is full of Rian Johnson whodunit goodness, but did you know it almost included a tribute to musical legend David Bowie?

Glass Onion cast members Janelle Monáe and Edward Norton revealed at a Nov. 14 press conference that they filmed a scene where their characters jam out to Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream” together. (Monáe has covered the song in the past.)

SEE ALSO:

All those ‘Glass Onion’ cameos, ranked

The scene is a flashback to the early days of the friendship between tech disruptors Miles Bron (Norton) and Cassandra “Andi” Brand (Monáe). In it, Andi sings “Moonage Daydream” while Miles accompanies her on guitar. Their friends Claire Debella (Kathryn Hahn) and Birdie Jay (Kate Hudson) dance along on the side “like go-go dancers,” said Johnson.

Shot at the end of a shooting day, around 1 a.m., the scene was meant to illustrate Miles and Andi’s friendship before it soured. “We were trying to think of things that they might’ve done in the bar when it was good, when we’re bonding,” explained Norton.

“To show the deep connection,” added Monáe.

Monáe and Norton are both massive fans of Bowie, so they approached Johnson with the idea that the Glass Onion bar where Andi and Miles hang out might have had an open-mic night. Norton even contacted someone he knows at musical instrument company Gibson in order to get a replica of Mick Ronson’s Black Beauty Les Paul guitar for Miles to play in the scene.

While the scene was filmed — “Rian indulged us with two takes,” said Norton — it was cut from Glass Onion. Upon hearing this, interviewer Josh Horowitz exclaimed, “Release the Bowie cut!”

However, if Johnson gets his way, we might never see the footage.

“It’s such an incredible memory of this surreal late night, the best concert in the world for like seven people standing around in a basement bar in Belgrade,” Johnson said. “It’s so romantic, I almost want to burn the footage.”

If you’re still craving a David Bowie-Glass Onion crossover, you’re in luck. Keep your ears wide open for Bowie’s song “Starman,” featured in the Glass Onion bar bonding scene — perhaps as a tribute to what might have been.

Glass Onion is now on Netflix.

The internet’s 2022 horny dictionary

A flustered cartoon woman reading a horny dictionary with words popping out of the book, reading

From “Fleabag era” to “flop era,” 2022 was a year of eras. But none left a greater mark than Not Okay actor Dylan O’Brien’s. The actor upped the ante and shook us out of our sad girl stupor by tweeting two words, “slut era.”

His tweet ushered in a horny state of mind for anyone who came into contact with his powerful words. However, as much as we wanted to embrace our slut eras, we often fell short. This disconnect between expectations and reality led to a meme where Twitter users declared slut era, followed by something glaringly un-slutty like, rewatching Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban or checking to see if your crush has viewed your story.

But there was one area where we consistently rose to O’Brien’s challenge: thirst commenting.

Being horny on main has been widely accepted since at least 2018 and the thirst tweet economy has only gotten progressively more competitive. By 2019, violence became the mainstream way to express your attraction (“step on my neck,” “run me over with a bus,” break my back like a glow stick”). While that level of aggression remains foundational to the genre, we’ve evolved to heights of horniness that involve self-inflicted pain and the stench of desperation. These days in order to express even a modicum of arousal a flair for the dramatics is a must.

“He’s so babygirl” is the new submissive and breedable, a phrase used to describe when a man is so primally attractive that you want to provide for him that became mainstream in 2021. Babygirl a term of endearment for when a man is being cute, comfortable in his masculinity, or weak in an evocative way. Women reclaimed babygirl and used it as an adjective to infantilize grown men.

Once upon a time, barking or woofing on the internet was used to call out racism. Now you might bark or woof in the replies of someone you feel a strong, animalistic attraction to.

Boyfriend

Like babygirl, boyfriend was used in stimulating and invigorating ways this year. Boyfriend was a job description and an adjective. “He’s so boyfriend here” is a tried and true response to an image or video that stirs up the “we’re dating” delusions.

Don’t ask me the color of anything

This saying became a popular TikTok comment late last year and is still holding strong. It’s used when horny tunnel vision kicks in and you can only focus on the person in question…or even on their specific body part.

I’m sat

I’m sat implies deference to someone’s erotic gravitas. In May a clip from Love Island season 3 went viral where Olivia tells Chris she’s done with the conversation. Chris replies, “sit back down.” To which Olivia responds, “I’m sat.” In the over 138,000 videos on TikTok, the snippet is used to express who you’d unequivocally obey by displaying their photo when Chris says “sit back down.” Users shortened the soundbite to be used in comment form.

Just fell to my knees (in a Walmart)

It’s no longer enough to say you’re down bad. In 2022 we got descriptive and we got specific. “Just fell to my knees in a Walmart” is for when you’re so overcome by desire that textbook horny language couldn’t even begin to describe what you’re going through. The statement encapsulates the theatrics and madness a good thirst trap elicits and is part of a genre of sayings that overruns the internet.

Synonyms include “Gnawing my own arm off,” “Collapsing as we speak,” “Just broke down,” “Have to focus on my breathing to calm down,” “Knees shaking, eyes rolling, toes curling,” “Changed the trajectory of my life,” “Bites fist,” “Gonna faint,” “I feel dizzy,” “I can’t do this right now,” “I am unwell,” “Lord, I am not your strongest soldier,” “Punching air,” “Banging my head against the wall,” “Sliding down the wall dramatically,” “Dangerously horny,” “Help,” “I’m sick,” the list can go on.

Just moaned out loud

You get the gist.

We can’t mention “just moaned out loud,” without acknowledging its elder sister “Didn’t mean to moan like that, my bad,” a turn of phrase popularized by a beloved reaction meme. The meme in question of course being a car selfie of internet comedian, Casey Frey, overlaid with “Didn’t mean to moan like that, my bad” in blue text. Both expressions convey a lack of control in response to a stimulus.

Kicking my feet and giggling

So giddy that you may even be twirling your hair too.

Yes, chef

A defining lusty moment of the year was the release of The Bear on Hulu this summer. In it, an artfully tattooed Jeremy Allen White portrays Carmy, a stressed out fine dining chef who inherited his late brother’s sandwich shop…in a tight white tee-shirt. Carmy is visually the perfect scumbag and it awakened something in many viewers, so much so that some dubbed summer 2022 “hot line cook summer.” And perhaps the sexiest part of the show was the intensity with which he ran the sandwich shop and managed his staff to which they all responded, “yes, chef.” Horny watchers were desperate to be on the receiving end of those orders, forever altering the connotation of that phrase (and the replies to images of Allen White on Twitter).

[Redacted]

Sometimes it’s more powerful to leave some things to the internet’s (dirty) imagination. “I want her to [redacted] and [redacted] until she [redacted],” does just that. [Redacted] is only one example of this fail-safe method of thirst tweeting. The approach makes what’s left unsaid so loud.

Synonyms include “*****,” “If I spoke–,” “Much to think about,” “I might say something,” “Listen,” “This better not awaken anything in me,” and “The things I would let them do to me.”

Smash

With one simple word you can declare that you’d bang, no questions asked.

Like most things smash was reintroduced into the internet’s horny lexicon thanks to a TikTok sound. In December of last year, users @qezzg and @fizag01 posted a video using a Peppa Pig character filter. It landed on Peppa Pig and one said, “smash.” The other responded, “Suzie!” To which she replied, “Wait, what was the game? Smash or pass?” With over 39,000 videos and counting, it became a go-to sound to use in response to any photo or video where you’re just so overwhelmed by your attraction that you can’t focus on anything else. And when you’re too lazy to make a whole video about your interest, a smash comment will do the trick.

Can’t wait to see what 2023 brings, we’re constantly achieving new heights of horniness!

This handheld massager on sale for $60 is designed to deliver a more human experience

woman using actigun on neck muscles

TL;DR: As of Dec. 25, you can snag the Actigun Percussion Massager for just $59.99 instead of $199.99 — that’s a savings of 70%.

The holidays are notorious for taking an emotional, financial, mental, and physical toll on everybody. It’s as if all the holiday cheer automatically gets converted to sheer exhaustion once the festivities are over.

When the going gets rough, don’t deprive yourself of little pleasures like sleeping in a bit later, doing quick meditation exercises, or even getting a massage. After all, the back pain you get after wrapping way too many presents is no joke. But if you can’t find the time or budget to spare a trip to the spa, your best bet is to find relief through a tool you can use at home like the Actigun. This percussion massager is on sale for 70% off for a limited time.

Equipped with an AI smart chip, the Actigun delivers a humanized intelligent interactive experience by giving you the exact percussive strength you need based on the current condition of your muscle. It’s just like receiving treatment from an actual masseuse, except that it’s AI doing all the work. It claims not to merely relieve pain but also speed up recovery, promote healthy circulation, and increase your range of motion.

The Actigun comes with four massage heads to cater to varying massage needs. It’s designed to target specific areas as well as cater to joint injuries and big muscle groups. It can also deliver 1200 to 3300 percussions per minute, and the best part is it does it all quietly. The built-in brushless silent motor operates at low 39dB noise.

With the high-capacity lithium battery, the massager allows for over 120 minutes of continuous treatment. While that sounds too long, its durable anti-slip grip makes massaging easier and more comfortable, so you won’t feel like your arm would fall off. It also features a high-efficiency thermal ventilation design, meaning it reduces heat during use.

Normally retailing for $199.99, you can get the Actigun Percussion Massager on sale for only $59.99 for a limited time.
