There’s yet another reason to celebrate the historic release of Crazy Rich Asians

Not only is it the first studio film in over 25 years to star an all-Asian cast, but in the five days that Crazy Rich Asians has been in theaters, it’s shattered expectations and made $34 million — handily surpassing its $30 million budget.

The gross includes worldwide ticket sales for the film’s run in over 3,000 theaters, according to Box Office Mojo. Analysts had expected it would make around $25 million, according to CNN. Read more…

Jack Dorsey says Twitter’s ‘left-leaning’ bias doesn’t affect content decisions

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey is still trying to convince conservatives that his service treats them fairly.

Speaking to CNN’s Brian Stelter in an interview that aired Saturday, Twitter’s top executive again reiterated that the social media company does not make content decisions on the basis of political views, even though Twitter itself has a “more left-leaning” bias.

“But the real question behind the question is, are we doing something according to political ideology or viewpoints? And we are not. Period,” Dorsey said in response to a question about “shadow bans,” Twitter’s practice of using algorithms to limit the visibility of certain tweets. “We do not look at content with regards to political viewpoints or ideology, we look at behavior.” Read more…

August needs more holidays, so here are some ideas

It’s the last slog of summer, and with each hot, sticky day we become more panicked.

Some questions on our minds right now: Will we ever be comfortable again? What does not sweating feel like? Is there anything to look forward to before the autumnal equinox? 

The solution to our woes, of course, is to create some kind of reason to enjoy the sweltering, existentially taxing days before fall saves us. And what’s a better excuse to enjoy things than a nice holiday? August needs more of those.

Elon Musk enjoys world’s gentlest softball interview with Marques Brownlee after total meltdown

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has the whole world on his shoulders, but you sure wouldn’t know it watching a new interview with popular YouTuber Marques Brownlee.

The 17-minute conversation, supposedly conducted on August 15 and published on Friday, is filled with hot air about traction control, making “products that people love,” and the upcoming Tesla Roadster that Brownlee pre-ordered sight unseen.

“I’m a day-one deposit, because I’m that excited,” Brownlee, a 24-year-old whose show MKBHD could make up to $99,900 a month according to one estimate, said.

Of course, outside of the chitchat about how to make the nice cars go faster, Musk has spent the last week navigating a series of stranger-than-fiction controversies.  Read more…

Kevin Spacey’s ‘Billionaire Boys Club’ opened to $126 — and no, that isn’t a typo

Yes, you read that rightBillionaire Boys Club, starring Kevin Spacey, made just $126 at the box office during its opening weekend. 

The film opened Friday in only 10 theaters in the U.S. 

Despite its all star cast — including Ansel Elgort, Taron Egerton, Emma Roberts, Jeremy Irvine, Cary Elwes, Judd Nelson, and Billie Lourd — it brought in an abysmal $126 in total.

Toronto is finally filling this sinkhole because annoyed residents turned it into a tomato garden

Fed up Toronto residents managed to push the city into fixing a sinkhole by passive aggressively planting tomatoes in it.

A huge pothole has marred Poplar Plains Road “for months now,” according to CityNews reporter Brandon Rowe.

Fed up with the city’s slow progress on getting it fixed, the gardeners of Toronto banded together and planted tomatoes in the pothole. 

No this isn’t a community garden! Some fed up residents in the Summerhill area planted tomatoes in this sinkhole as they wait for the city to fix it. One woman tells me that the crater has been on Poplar Plains Cres. for months now@CityNews pic.twitter.com/bXiVMhGdrF

Jennifer Lopez knows what the people want, and what the people want are romantic comedies.

On Friday night’s Tonight Show, Lopez talked to host Jimmy Fallon about her upcoming film Second Act, in which she stars as a woman who enters the corporate workforce in her forties, per Entertainment Weekly. She’ll act opposite Milo Ventimiglia of This Is Us and Gilmore Girls fame.

After gushing over “heartthrob” Ventimiglia, Lopez and Fallon moved onto the topic of romantic comedies, a genre the singer and actress feels people “need.”

Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra’s engagement went Instagram official, and the internet can’t handle it.

Jonas reportedly popped the question a month ago on Chopra’s 36th birthday. The couple didn’t make the official announcement until Saturday morning, however, after a traditional engagement ceremony in Mumbai.

Jonas and Chopra both posted adorable photos from their Roka ceremony — one of the traditional Indian pre-wedding events — on Instagram.

NASA cameras spot extremely bright meteor streak through the sky over Alabama

Dozens of people in the Southeast U.S. were treated to a special cosmic show in the wee hours of Friday morning.

An exceedingly bright fireball meteor streaked above that part of the country at about 1:19 a.m. ET on Friday, and it was caught in the act by NASA’s all sky cameras in Alabama.

“Early results indicate the fireball, which was at least 40 times as bright as the Full Moon, was caused by a small asteroid 6 feet (2 meters) in diameter,” NASA said in a Facebook post. 

It’s possible that some small pieces of the meteor made it to the ground — where they’re known as meteorites — but it’s unclear whether any small chunks made it all the way through the atmosphere, NASA added. Read more…

New panda mom doesn’t know she has twins thanks to these sneaky zookeepers

Crafty zookeepers are keeping a set of newborn panda twins alive by switching them out every day. 

Although twins aren’t uncommon, when pandas have multiple babies they tend to devote all of their attention to only one of their cubs, leaving the other to starve.

But these zookeepers have managed to get new panda moms to care for both babies by rotating them out, tricking the pandas into believing they only have one cub to care for.
