Tesla sent employees the most passive-aggressive confidentiality email

TwitterFacebook

Tesla emailed its employees on Thursday to caution them against leaking company information, especially to the press.

The email, which was leaked to the press, ostensibly pits Tesla and its employees against “outsiders” and those who will “do anything to see us fail.”

“As a result of our success, we will continue to see an interest from people who will do anything to see us fail,” the Tesla email reads. “This includes people who are actively seeking proprietary information for their own gain, targeting Tesla employees through personal networks or on social networks like LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter.” Read more…

Robert Downey Jr. hosted a star-studded lunch featuring Brie Larson, Zoe Saldana, and more

TwitterFacebook

This is One Good Thing, a weekly column where we tell you about one of the few nice things that happened this week.

I don’t think I’ve ever had this much FOMO about a lunch.

As the Avengers: Endgame hubbub continues to keep the internet ablaze, the stars of the record-breaking film are stoking the coals with even more content. Robert Downey Jr. shared a couple of photos from a very fun lunch on his Instagram earlier this week.

SpaceX just blasted a critical NASA instrument into space

TwitterFacebook

NASA’s carbon-detecting sleuth has left Earth.

SpaceX launched the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-3 (OCO-3) to the International Space Station (ISS) at 2:48 a.m. ET on Saturday morning aboard the company’s dependable Falcon 9 rocket. After NASA’s cargo load arrives at the ISS, astronauts will use a long robotic arm to attach the refrigerator-sized instrument to the side of the earth-orbiting station.

OCO-3 will peer down on Earth, keeping tabs on the planet’s amassing carbon dioxide emissions, which are now at their highest levels in millions of years.

“Carbon dioxide is the most important gas humans are emitting into the atmosphere,” Annmarie Eldering, the project scientist for OCO-3 at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, told Mashable in February. “Understanding how it will play out in the future is critical.” Read more…

Samsung’s 4K TV ‘The Frame’ is on sale for a historically low price

TwitterFacebook

Big 4K TVs steal the show in a room, which is great when you’re watching something. But when turned off, they can be kind of an eyesore. That is unless the TV blends in.

Samsung’s “The Frame” is a 4K smart TV that looks like a digital picture frame, so while you’re not binge-watching shows on Netflix you can set the TV to display photos and works of art. Instead of screaming “I’m a TV!” it’ll just look like you just have a fancy, high-tech piece of art in your home — because you do.

The Frame comes in both 55-inch and 65-inch models and the PCMag Shop has them for historically low prices — $1,099.99 and $1,799.99 respectively.  Read more…

The immense joy of watching Tiny Shrek sprint through an obstacle course

TwitterFacebook

Look, it’s been a long week, and then only thing I can think about right now is Tiny Shrek demolishing a dog obstacle course.

Sure, the Westminster Dog Show is impressive, but can any of those pure breeds beat Tiny Shrek? The answer is no. Nothing can compete with Tiny Shrek.

Ever since Twitter user @chanbanhi tweeted their edit of a comically small Shrek sprinting through a dog obstacle course on Thursday, my thoughts have been consumed with Tiny Shrek. I go through the daily motions of life — I eat, I sleep, I water my house plants, but at the end of the day, the only thing I can think about is this Tiny Shrek.  Read more…

YouTube ‘conspiracy’: Rogue engineer reveals secret plot to kill Internet Explorer

TwitterFacebook

Web developers really hated Internet Explorer 6

YouTube’s developers were so tired of dealing with the outdated Microsoft browser back in 2009 that they devised a plan to kill it, according to a post written by ex-YouTube engineer Chris Zacharias.

The plot was carried out without the permission of YouTube’s parent company, Google, says Zacharias who worked at the company from 2007 to 2010.

“IE6 had been the bane of our web development team’s existence,” writes the ex-YouTube engineer who is just now sharing the story about how IE6 met its demise in on his website. “At least one to two weeks every major sprint cycle had to be dedicated to fixing new UI that was breaking in IE6.” Read more…

Tesla’s self-driving ‘brain’ hit with serious Trump administration tariff

TwitterFacebook

Tesla will have trouble innovating its way out of this one.

The car manufacturer is facing potentially serious financial headwinds in its attempt to equip all newly produced vehicles with the technology required to enable full self-driving. So reports TechCrunch, which notes that the White House won’t budge on a 25 percent tariff on the Chinese-assembled ‘engine control unit’ the cars require. Notably, this tariff wouldn’t apply to the entire car — just the ECU.

The so-called Autopilot ECU is assembled in Shanghai, and that irks the White House. Tesla officially requested a tariff exemption on the unit in question, but that request was denied on March 15. The rejection letter had not previously been reported before this week. Read more…

Ever since Lil Nas X dropped “Old Town Road” (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus) earlier this month, the internet has been overrun with remixes of the “hip haw” song.

The latest — and definitely most enthusiastic —  remix comes from Jasmine A. Merlette’s third grade class.
