Where ‘Eternals 2’ could fit into the MCU if it actually happens

A massive red creature in space.

Marvel didn’t announce anything Eternals-related at this year’s Comic-Con, but Patton Oswalt, the voice of Pip the Troll, may have spilled the beans as to whether a sequel is on its way.

In an August 2 interview on The Today Show, Oswalt discussed his role in the 2021 superhero film, which saw him appear alongside Harry Styles as Eros in the Eternals post-credit scene. He then said, “They have announced there’s going to be an Eternals sequel. Chloé Zhao is going to direct it. So hopefully, there will be more adventures of Starfox and Pip.”

There actually hasn’t been any official word from Marvel on Eternals 2, but the studio did announce its jam-packed Phases 5 and 6, known as The Multiverse Saga. Upcoming projects include The Marvels, Captain America: New World Order, and Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3. With so many movies (and don’t forget all the TV shows) in the works, where would Eternals 2 even fit in?

Chances are we could find out at September’s D23 expo, where Marvel will potentially reveal even more projects. Storyline-wise, the Eternals fall into the far more “cosmic” section of the MCU. Remember, Eternals ended with the Celestial Arishem zapping several Eternals away with him into space. Now that they’ve left Earth, they’re in the company of other space-faring heroes like the Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel.

It’s possible that Eternals 2 will deal with Arishem’s judgment of humanity, as suggested by the film’s post-credit scene. Fueling that speculation is the fact that Marvel recently filed to trademark the title Celestials: End of Time, which suggests that we’ll be getting more Celestial action soon. Maybe they’ll finally address the fact that there’s a half-born Celestial just sticking out of the Earth?

Take that trademark news with a grain of salt — there’s a chance it could be a title for new comics that don’t tie into the MCU. However, now that Oswalt has seemingly let the cat out of the bag, keep an eye out for more news about Eternals 2 at D23.
