The first ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel series is dead at HBO

Jane Goldman’s untitled Game of Thrones prequel pilot was not picked up for series at HBO, according to The Hollywood Reporter

The pilot, which would have taken place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones during its legendary “Age of Heroes,” finished filming in the summer of 2019THR reports that Goldman e-mailed the pilot’s cast including Naomi Watts, Jamie Campbell-Bower, and Naomi Ackie to tell them that HBO passed on the series. They also report that the pilot was potentially not up to par at the network, citing sources that “say HBO wasn’t thrilled with the final cut of the Watts-led pilot and asked for changes in edits before scrapping the entire thing.” Read more…

Samsung’s new Galaxy Book laptops have wireless charging touchpads

It’s a good time to be someone who does most of their work on a laptop.

Just a couple of weeks after Google unveiled the excellent Pixelbook Go, Samsung announced two new laptops at its annual developer conference: the Galaxy Book Flex and Galaxy Book Ion.

The Galaxy Book Ion is a traditional laptop that comes in both 13.3-inch and 15.6-inch screen sizes, with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of internal storage. The coolest new feature is Wireless PowerShare on the touchpad, which is a fancy way of saying the laptop’s touchpad can charge Qi-compatible devices like phones and Galaxy Buds.

New ‘Mandalorian’ trailer hints at hard times in the bounty hunting community

A new trailer for The Mandalorian has dropped, giving us another glimpse at the first live-action series set in the Star Wars universe. Set five years after the Empire’s fall in Return of the Jedi, it seems not everybody is weathering the change well.

“It’s a world more peaceful since the revolution,” says Werner Herzog in the trailer’s voiceover. “It is a shame that your people suffered. But bounty hunting is a complicated profession.”

Presumably he’s speaking to the titular Mandalorian, played by Pedro Pascal. It’s likely work has dried up a bit since one of the universe’s largest employers of bounty hunters exploded. Read more…

‘The Grudge’s’ first trailer is here, and please pray for John Cho

The first trailer of 2020’s The Grudge has arrived just in time for Halloween, though nobody in it is in the mood for trick or treating.

Not to be confused with the 2004 film of the same name, this version of The Grudge is a reboot of the Japanese-American horror series, which I did not watch because I fear death.

The trailer for the new Grudge features John Cho as Peter Spencer, a real estate agent trying to sell a lovely house that should be burned to the ground. He seems like a good guy who’s just trying to do his job, and I sincerely hope he does not die.

Andrea Riseborough also appears as Muldoon, a detective who absolutely did not sign up for this when she joined the force. Upon investigating the house and inadvertently gaining a pale, dark-haired follower, she must keep both herself and her son safe from the eternally angry ghost. Good luck with that. Read more…

Uber Money will give the company an even tighter grip on its drivers’ finances

Uber is starting to look more and more like a bank.

The ride hailing giant unveiled Uber Money, a new division for the company focused on providing financial services for its riders and drivers, starting with debit and credit cards.

Though Uber has dabbled in these kinds of services in the past, Uber Money represents the company’s most significant investment in the space. The move will also likely prompt criticism for the company, which has faced pushback over low wages and its resistance to providing benefits to drivers.

Uber Money is the company's most aggressive push into financial services.

People are declassifying their pets after Trump tweets photo of military dog

The president’s tweet about declassifying a picture of the dog who assisted in a mission that ended with ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s death is a meme now.

2019 continues to be unreal.

The dog, whose name remains classified, chased al-Baghdadi down a dead-end tunnel after concerns that al-Baghdadi was wearing a suicide vest. He indeed was and detonated the vest in the tunnel, killing himself and three children in the blast.

The unnamed dog is believed to have been injured by an electrocution, CNN reports, but is recovering.

A defense official told CNN that because the dog was part of an Army Delta force operation — the secretive special forces group that takes on high-risk missions — “we can’t tell you the name of the dog.”  Read more…

‘Lock him up’: Watch a huge World Series crowd loudly boo Trump

There’s no crying in baseball, but sometimes there is booing.

Donald Trump turned up to Nationals Park to see the Washington Nationals take on the Houston Astros in Game 5 of the World Series on Sunday, while the first innings were already underway.

His entourage included the First Lady and some of his most loyal supporters amidst the impeachment inquiry, including Rep. Matt Gaetz (aka King Leonidas of D.C.) and Senator Lindsey Graham.

This party crew got a shout out on the big screen during the traditional salute to veterans during a break in play — and safe to say that the president is about as popular inside the ballpark as he is out of it.  Read more…
