The Tesla of motorcycles probably doesn’t have to worry about Tesla

The Tesla of motorcycles probably doesn't have to worry about Tesla

If Tesla ever got into motorcycles, a Canadian electric motorcycle company with a rival Autopilot system would give it a run for its money.

Damon Motorcycles unveiled its newest Hypersport bike at CES on Tuesday (January 7). The e-bike is a veritable speed demon, with a top speed of 200 mph and a 200-plus mile range. It starts at $24,995 before electric tax credits and incentives.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has vowed to stay away from motorcycles after a near-death experience as a teenager. However, at Tesla’s Cybertruck unveil in November, an all-electric ATV was tacked onto Tesla’s electric lineup. But still, technically, it’s no electric motorcycle. Read more…

I scanned my belly fat, and it made me sad

I scanned my belly fat, and it made me sad

Maybe not every part of our bodies needs to be quantified.

A Korean company called Olive Healthcare has debuted a new device called the Bello; it scans your belly and reveals what percentage of your tissues, blood, and guts is fat.

Devices like smart scales or BMI scanners (which also abound at CES) can also measure body fat, but the Bello team says their measure is more accurate. While the results of other devices can vary greatly based on your body’s water level, the Bello only measures lipids (a scientific term for fat), so Olive says it is more consistent and reliable.

While the Bello is focused on the belly, it’s not actually supposed to be a dieting device; Bello is supposedly for healthcare. Fat on your stomach, as opposed to, say, your butt, may be an indicator, for example, of how at risk women post menopause may be for diabetes or metabolic health disorders. Measuring your belly fat with the purpose of decreasing it over time could theoretically help you be healthier in the long run, not just skinnier in the short term. Read more…

Something Awful has shut down forum FYAD, citing ‘Nazi poo poo’

Something Awful has shut down forum FYAD, citing 'Nazi poo poo'

Comedy website Something Awful has shut down subforum Fuck You and Die (FYAD), with founder Richard “Lowtax” Kyanka citing an intolerable prevalence of Nazis.

“FYAD, back in the day, used to be full of funny people producing funny content. There were some incredible threads, and they had their own unique sense of humor that couldn’t be found anywhere else,” Kyanka wrote in a forum post announcing the decision on Monday. “Now FYAD is a loving racist shithole with no redeeming qualities whatsoever.”

Founded in 1999, Something Awful played a significant role in shaping early internet culture, giving birth to some of the earliest memes. Its forum popularized classic meme “All your base are belong to us”, and horror character Slender Man was originally created on the site.  Read more…

Facebook exec warns company not to be anti-Trump in bizarre leaked memo

Facebook exec warns company not to be anti-Trump in bizarre leaked memo

A high-ranking Facebook executive and longtime Mark Zuckerberg confidant penned a long Lord of the Rings-referencing memo warning the company not to take action that would reflect a bias against President Donald Trump.

Before the New Year, Andrew Bosworth, Facebook’s Vice President of augmented and virtual reality, posted a rambling 2,500 word screed to his internal Facebook page. The post offers up his thoughts on 2020 and the coming presidential election.

The New York Times originally obtained the private memo, but Bosworth has since also made it publicly available on his Facebook profile.

I am traveling and have only intermittent access to the internet for the next week, so for more context on the recent stories about my internal post please check my Facebook profile: https://t.co/ScYqPdkXBS

So Ivanka Trump’s big idea for ‘the future of work’ is … LinkedIn?

So Ivanka Trump's big idea for 'the future of work' is ... LinkedIn?

Ivanka Trump is not generally associated with the phrase “tech innovations” — a fact no one apparently bothered to relay to CES until it was too late.

The president’s daughter and failed businesswoman was at the annual technology convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, today to give a talk on the future of work. And what a future it is. According to Trump, the workers of tomorrow will be graced with an “interoperable learning record” which will allow them to bring a list of all their skills with them wherever they go.

That’s right, Trump’s big idea for the American worker is some kind of standardized LinkedIn.  Read more…

Lenovo’s Smart Frame puts your digital photos on display without ruining your feng shui

Lenovo's Smart Frame puts your digital photos on display without ruining your feng shui

While most smart displays are basically glorified photo frames, they’re also not very practical looking. But Lenovo’s Smart Frame, which debuted at this year’s CES, blends into your home in a way that’s far more traditional.

The Smart Frame has a 21.5-inch IPS display with a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution and an anti-glare coating. It also comes with an RGB ambient light sensor, so that it can automatically adjust to the color temperature of your room depending on the environment.

In person, I was actually super impressed by the quality. When a painting was displayed on the frame, I could see the different textures and finishes on the trees and flowers. Almost to the point where I was convinced that if I ran my finger along the display, I could probably feel it.  Read more…

Parkland survivor on why he believes in brain-scanning meditation wearables

Parkland survivor on why he believes in brain-scanning meditation wearables

At CES, tech execs and thirsty industry analysts abound. This year, there was also a college student and mass shooting survivor named Kai Koerber preaching about the benefits of meditation.

Koerber is a U.C. Berkeley student and activist who is a survivor of the February 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in Parkland, Florida. Parkland survivors took action in the wake of the shooting by advocating for gun control legislation, and now, Koerber is calling for mental health resources in schools.

He founded an organization called the Societal Reform Corp. that raises money and champions mental health, mediation, and mindfulness education. Read more…
