‘Quordle’ today: Here are the answers and hints for August 18, 2023

A woman's hands holding a mobile phone playing 'Quordle'

If Quordle is a little too challenging today, you’ve come to the right place for hints. There aren’t just hints here, but the whole Quordle solution. Scroll to the bottom of this page, and there it is. But are you sure you need all four answers? Maybe you just need a strategy guide. Either way, scroll down, and you’ll get what you need.

What is Quordle?

Quordle is a five-letter word guessing game similar to Wordle, except each guess applies letters to four words at the same time. You get nine guesses instead of six to correctly guess all four words. It looks like playing four Wordle games at the same time, and that is essentially what it is. But it’s not nearly as intimidating as it sounds.

Is Quordle harder than Wordle?

Yes, though not diabolically so.

Where did Quordle come from?

Amid the Wordle boom of late 2021 and early 2022, when everyone was learning to love free, in-browser, once-a-day word guessing games, creator Freddie Meyer says he took inspiration from one of the first big Wordle variations, Dordle — the one where you essentially play two Wordles at once. He took things up a notch, and released Quordle on January 30. Meyer’s creation was covered in The Guardian six days later, and now, according to Meyer, it attracts millions of daily users. Today, Meyer earns modest revenue from Patreon, where dedicated Quordle fans can donate to keep their favorite puzzle game running.

How is Quordle pronounced?

“Kwordle.” It should rhyme with “Wordle,” and definitely should not be pronounced exactly like “curdle.”

Is Quordle strategy different from Wordle?

Yes and no.

Your starting strategy should be the same as with Wordle. In fact, if you have a favorite Wordle opening word, there’s no reason to change that here. We suggest something rich in vowels, featuring common letters like C, R, and N. But you do you.

After your first guess, however, you’ll notice things getting out of control if you play Quordle exactly like Wordle.

What should I do in Quordle that I don’t do in Wordle?

Solving a Wordle puzzle can famously come down to a series of single letter-change variations. If you’ve narrowed it down to “-IGHT,” you could guess “MIGHT” “NIGHT” “LIGHT” and “SIGHT” and one of those will probably be the solution — though this is also a famous way to end up losing in Wordle, particularly if you play on “hard mode.” In Quordle, however, this sort of single-letter winnowing is a deadly trap, and it hints at the important strategic difference between Wordle and Quordle: In Quordle, you can’t afford to waste guesses unless you’re eliminating as many letters as possible at all times.

Guessing a completely random word that you already know isn’t the solution, just to eliminate three or four possible letters you haven’t tried yet, is thought of as a desperate, latch-ditch move in Wordle. In Quordle, however, it’s a normal part of the player’s strategic toolset.

Is there a way to get the answer faster?

In my experience Quordle can be a slow game, sometimes dragging out longer than it would take to play Wordle four times. But a sort of blunt-force guessing approach can speed things up. The following strategy also works with Wordle if you only want the solution, and don’t care about having the fewest possible guesses:

Try starting with a series of words that puts all the vowels (including Y) on the board, along with some other common letters. We’ve had good luck with the three words: “NOTES,” “ACRID,” and “LUMPY.” YouTuber DougMansLand suggests four words: “CANOE,” “SKIRT,” “PLUMB,” and “FUDGY.”

Most of the alphabet is now eliminated, and you’ll only have the ability to make one or two wrong guesses if you use this strategy. But in most cases you’ll have all the information you need to guess the remaining words without any wrong guesses.

If strategy isn’t helping, and you’re still stumped, here are some hints:

Are there any double or triple letters in today’s Quordle words?

One word has a twice-occurring letter.

Are any rare letters being used in today’s Quordle like Q or Z?

X.

What do today’s Quordle words start with?

B, Q, A, and A.

What are the answers for today’s Quordle?

Are you sure you want to know?

There’s still time to turn back.

OK, you asked for it. The answers are:

  1. EXPEL

  2. ROGUE

  3. PATCH

  4. MINTY

Lawsuit: YouTube and Reddit helped radicalize Buffalo mass shooter

A memorial of photos for victims of the Buffalo, New York, mass shooting at Tops grocery store.

Two new lawsuits argue that YouTube, along with its parent companies Alphabet and Google, and Reddit bear responsibility for helping to radicalize the mass shooter who killed 10 Black people at a Tops Friendly Markets grocery store in Buffalo, New York, in 2022.

The suits were filed Tuesday on behalf of 16 survivors of the racially-motivated massacre, and on behalf of Wayne Jones, son of Celestine Chaney, a 65-year-old grandmother of nine who was killed in the attack.

Prior to the shooting, the gunman reportedly used YouTube, Reddit, and other social media platforms to learn about conspiracy theories, including The Great Replacement, a white supremacist ideology.

The shooter, who was sentenced to life in prison earlier this year, “developed plans for a violent, racist attack using detailed information he obtained from social media sources,” according to both complaints.

“This racist attack could have been prevented; numerous companies and individuals had the power to stop it from happening,” said Jones in a press release. “My only hope is that this lawsuit can raise awareness and hold them accountable so that another gunman can’t inflict the same kind of terror and incalculable damage.”

Both suits argue that YouTube and Reddit employed algorithms and design features that “maximized the Shooter’s engagement with their products by systematically promoting extreme and harmful content and giving him an unending supply of it.”

They also claim that the gunman “became transfixed and addicted to this online world,” and that he would access his accounts constantly, including at night.

On a Reddit forum specializing in tactical gear, the gunman was able to discuss and acquire equipment for the attack, the suits allege. YouTube videos viewed by the gunman helped him learn how to remove a firearm’s magazine lock as well as win gunfights, according to the complaints.

Everytown Law, the litigation arm of Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund, and civil rights lawyers from the firms Bonner and Bonner and Ryder Law filed both suits. A gun manufacturer, combat gear company, firearms store, and the shooter’s parents are also named in the complaints.

A spokesperson for YouTube told Axios that the company extended “deepest sympathies” to those who’d been affected by the massacre.

“Through the years, YouTube has invested in technology, teams, and policies to identify and remove extremist content,” the spokesperson said.

“Although nothing can ever change what happened at Tops Friendly Market on May 14, 2022, filing and fully prosecuting these lawsuits are important steps in identifying and holding accountable the bad actors that prepared and equipped the shooter to kill, maim and terrorize a Black community,” Charles Bonner, principal of Bonner & Bonner, said in a statement.

Wow, a very rare tropical storm is tracking toward California. What to know.

The storm track for Tropical Storm Hilary as of August 17, 2023.

Here’s a map you’ve probably never seen before.

A rare storm will make landfall in California. During the entire 20th Century, just one tropical storm — a cyclone from the tropics with sustained winds of at least 39 mph — hit the Golden State in 1939. Now, as of August 17, the National Weather Service reports that Tropical Storm Hilary will make landfall early Monday morning, likely somewhere along the U.S.-Mexico border. Hilary will strengthen into a hurricane over the warmer waters of the tropical Pacific before significantly weakening as it approaches the U.S.

Crucially, the storm’s behavior, track, and regional impacts will change in the coming days. But the big picture is clear: Parts of Southern California and the Southwest will experience heavy rainfall and flash fooding risk.

“People should prepare for heavy rainfall,” Zack Taylor, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, told Mashable. “Regardless of the strength of the system, there is potential to bring significant impacts to the Southwestern U.S.”

SEE ALSO:

In other words, just because the storm’s greatest risk isn’t wind and it will no longer be a hurricane (technically meaning sustained winds over 74 mph), the system still carries bounties of moisture.

Tropical Storm Hilary track and impact predictions

Storms around the U.S., and world, are steered around by large areas of high and low pressure in the atmosphere. In this case, a trough (low pressure) over the Western U.S. and ridge (high pressure) over the central U.S. will steer Hilary on a path northward through Baja California.

A note about the storm track prediction: The predicted track you see below is shown by a cone, because the storm’s exact trajectory is based on evolving winds, ocean temperature, and beyond. The cone “represents the probable track of the center of a tropical cyclone,” the National Hurricane Center explains.

Here’s the predicted track as of 9 a.m. MDT on Aug. 17:

Intense rain and freshwater flooding will be the major impact in parts of Southern California, particularly flood-prone areas. “Heavy rain with the potential for flash flooding and debris flows remains the primary concern for So Cal Sun-Mon,” San Diego’s National Weather Service office wrote online.

The rains will peak Sunday and Monday in Southern California, Taylor said. But, importantly, rainfall estimates will be updated by the Weather Service over the coming days, he underscored.

Here is the rainfall prediction as of August 17. As of then, regions east of Los Angeles and San Diego will get the most rain, with some 10 inches at highest — though this can change.

Strong winds will be a factor, too, in some regions — but certainly not anything approaching hurricane winds. There’s a “20-30% chance tropical storm-force winds, beginning as early as Sun evening,” the National Weather Service said.

Fortunately, the Pacific waters off of Baja California are significantly cooler than the bathtub-like temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean — which act as “hurricane fuel” for intensifying tropical storms. Still, the impacts from Hilary can be serious, including not just rainfall and some high winds but dangerous coastal swells.

Stay tuned to your local National Weather Service Office.

“People should monitor the latest forecast as we hone in the latest details,” Taylor said.

Meet ‘Zombie Star,’ soon one of the strongest magnets in the universe

Astronomers observing a magnetic living star

Astronomers have been studying a weird old star in deep space that is alive — but just barely.

The beguiling star in the HD 45166 system is known as a Wolf-Rayet, in the midst of a rare and brief phase that makes it burn hotter and generate powerful gas winds right before it explodes in a supernova.

But why would such a light star — that is, one only about four times the mass of the sun — behave like a Wolf-Rayet, which is often exceedingly more massive? What’s more, the star isn’t nearly as luminous as others in its class and has funky, unexpected ingredients, like nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon.

Astrophysicists Tomer Shenar and Julia Bodensteiner began calling it the Zombie Star, not because it’s almost dead, but because it became Shenar’s obsession, turning him into a zombified stargazer as he tried to solve the mystery.

“It has certainly kept me awake at night,” Shenar told Mashable. “The star was a riddle to me, and my colleagues had to suffer my repeated mentions of this object.”

Spectacular Webb telescope image shows a stellar death like never before

The team concluded the star is likely an oddball because it’s on the verge of becoming a magnetar, the most magnetic thing in the universe.

The star, located about 3,000 light-years from Earth with a companion star in the constellation Monoceros, turns out to be the most magnetic massive living star ever found. The new findings, published in the journal Science, present the Zombie Star as a new type of astronomical object that may explain the origin of magnetars, tightly packed stellar corpses with mighty magnetic fields. Up until now, how they form has eluded experts.

The discovery happened after Shenar had an epiphany: What if it’s magnetic?

“The star was a riddle to me.”

The team studied it with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope that can detect and measure magnetic fields. They learned the star is extremely magnetic, at 43,000 gauss. For a reference point, Earth’s magnetic field — invisible forces that help compasses operate and birds navigate — is 0.5 gauss. The entire surface of the Zombie Star has a magnetic field almost 100,000 times stronger than Earth’s, said co-author Pablo Marchant, an astronomer at KU Leuven’s Institute of Astronomy in Belgium, in a statement.

Want more science and tech news delivered straight to your inbox? Sign up for Mashable’s Light Speed newsletter today.

“I don’t know how it would feel for a human being, but I doubt it would feel nice,” Shenar, the lead author, said in an email. “I guess the iron in our blood would get pulled to our heads (or legs).”

When the Zombie Star sheds solar material, it can’t escape because of the magnetic fields, trapped in arches that collide at the magnetic equator, says Shenar, who is based at the Centre for Astrobiology in Spain. In fact, most of the light astronomers can see from the star is actually coming from this captured shell of material.

Shenar used to work at KU Leuven’s Institute of Astronomy, where researchers have access to the Mercator telescope in the Canary Islands. He would often beg his colleagues for a favor to sneak in another “spectrum” of the Zombie Star, a chart of starlight data that tells astronomers about a star’s makeup.

The team calculates that the star will end its life as a magnetar, a special breed of neutron star with an extremely powerful magnetic field. While some supernovas result in a new black hole, others form dense neutron stars when the core of a massive star collapses.

During the collapse, its magnetic strength will crescendo, the team suggests, eventually becoming a dead core with a magnetic field of about 100 trillion gauss.

In hindsight, Shenar believes his obsessive thoughts about HD 45166 and nagging were worth it, uncovering an important piece of the puzzle about magnetars. Fortunately, he reports that he has suffered no other zombifying symptoms, like feeding on hapless undergrads.

“I’m a vegetarian, so no,” he said.

Russian spacecraft snaps wild moon photo before attempted landing

Russian spacecraft orbiting the moon

Russia has made the 239,000-mile journey through space to the moon for the first time in a half-century and has photographic evidence to prove it.

The Institute for Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences released an image Thursday of the Zeeman crater in the lunar south pole region on the far side of the moon, taken just about 8 a.m. Moscow time.

The photos follow some stunning images provided by India’s lunar spacecraft last week.

“Invisible from the Earth, the Zeeman crater is a unique object on the lunar surface and is of great interest to researchers,” the institute said in a news release, adding that the height of the basin is about 5 miles deep with a relatively flat bottom.

The Soviet Union, which collapsed in 1991, was the first nation to land a robotic spacecraft on the moon and sent many afterward. But the Luna-25 mission is the first moon voyage for Russia in the post-Soviet era. The mission was originally intended as a partnership with the European Space Agency, but Europe backed out following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, has pushed ahead with a go-it-alone approach.

The Soviet Union’s Luna-3 mission captured the world’s first image of the far side of the moon in October 1959.

The latest space race is between Russia and India, though it’s possible — even likely — neither nation will win, given the difficulty of the challenge: first to land at the shadowy lunar south pole.

Each will try to put a crewless spacecraft on this unexplored region of the moon, where scientists believe water ice is buried within craters. The murky, dark area will be a much tougher target than previous sites chosen by the Soviet Union, United States, and China, who have landed in bright conditions around the moon’s equator.

Though 60 years have passed since the first non-human moon landings, touching down safely remains a daunting task, with less than half of all missions succeeding. Unlike around Earth, the moon’s atmosphere is very thin, providing virtually no drag to slow a spacecraft down as it approaches the ground. Furthermore, there are no GPS systems on the moon to help guide a craft to its landing spot.

The Indian Space Research Organization’s Chandrayaan-3 mission launched in mid-July from Sriharikota, a barrier island of southeastern India. It’s the space agency’s do-over following a crash on the moon in 2019. The team will get its next crack at a landing on Aug. 23. On Thursday, the lander successfully separated from its propulsion module as it continues to prepare for the main event, according to the space agency.

Roscosmos has said its robotic Luna-25 spacecraft could touch down on the moon as early as Monday, Aug. 21.

Brands suspend advertising on X after ads appear alongside Nazi content

X iOS app

Less than a week after X CEO Linda Yaccarino claimed the platform formerly known as Twitter was safe for brands, at least two companies are suspending ad campaigns on the social media website.

Why? Because the brands’ ads appeared alongside neo-Nazi content.

Pharmaceutical giant Gilead and the NCTA – The Internet and Television Association have both informed CNN that its company was no longer advertising on X following a new report that found major brands ads being shown on content promoting nazi ideology.

The NCTA said in a statement to CNN that it was using X’s brand safety tools, ones in which X CEO Yaccarino recently promoted as one of the reasons the platform was now safe for advertisers. X has struggled to woo brands back to the platform following Elon Musk’s acquisition of the company in October. Approximately half of the company’s biggest advertisers stopped running ads on the platform following content moderation changes implemented by Musk.

SEE ALSO:

Elon Musk’s X/Twitter is letting paying users hide their blue ticks

Furthermore, one organization that had ads placed on this content claimed that it wasn’t an X advertiser at all. In a statement provided to CNN, University of Maryland’s associate athletic director told the outlet that Maryland Football hasn’t run a paid ad campaign on X since 2021.

Right-wing media watchdog Media Matters for America released a report detailing how X was serving ads to users on far right wing, openly fascist content. The report focuses on one specific account, “New American Union,” which has since been suspended from X. The account tweeted out white supremacist, neo-Nazi, and pro-Hitler content.

The report found that ads from brands like Amazon, FIFA, Samsung, MLB, Sports Illustrated, and Adobe were being served on content posted by this account.

The organization released the report shortly after Yaccarino gave a rare video interview to CNBC where she reiterated that the platform was focusing on brand safety with the release of new “sensitivity” tools and ostensibly incidents like the ones detailed in Media Matters’ report wouldn’t happen. X owner Elon Musk brought Yaccarino onboard earlier this year specifically to help bring advertisers back to the platform after Musk’s subscription-based revenue plans floundered.

As X continues to struggle with its paid subscription model, advertisers are going to be central to the platform’s future. Historically, in the years before Musk, ads made up more than 90 percent of the company’s revenue. However, Musk has continued to place his personal proclivity for right-wing content and influencers over brand – and really overall user – safety. For example, last month, Musk personally intervened to restore a right-wing influencer’s account after they were suspended for posting photos of child exploitation.

The automated convenience of a robot vacuum is undeniably sweet, but for some, a Roomba just can’t compare to the satisfying all-over clean you get from manual vacuuming. That’s where Dyson comes in. YouTube channel Linus Tech Tips halts production to address content errors

Linus Sebastian's face, wearing a glum expression, next to the logo for Linus Tech Tips YouTube channel.

This week, for the first time in over a decade, the Linus Tech Tips YouTube channel will not be uploading videos.

Linus Media Group, the 120-person company that produces content for Linus Tech Tips and its associated channels like ShortCircuit and TechQuickie, is pausing production for at least a week to “focus on long-term upload changes.”

The announcement comes after fellow tech review channel Gamers Nexus posted a 44-minute long video on Aug. 14 detailing errors in Linus Tech Tips videos, from lax data reporting to factual flubs.

Linus Media Group explained the shutdown in an Aug. 16 video in which the company’s CEO, CFO, COO, CTO and the heads of its lab, business development, production, and writing divisions assured viewers that they would be correcting errors in both processes and personal judgment moving forward.

CEO Terren Tong, who took over the company for founder Linus Sebastian in July, acknowledged “recent community outcry demanding change” but did not name Gamers Nexus.

Sebastian began uploading videos to Linus Tech Tips in 2008 and remains at the company as Chief Vision Officer for Linus Media Group. The business has more than 20 million subscribers across its channels and a devout following across its associated podcasts and annual conventions.

Data errors aren’t the only issue challenging the company’s integrity. On Aug. 16, before the company announced its production pause, former Linus Media Group employee Madison Reeve posted a thread on X outlining her experience there. She detailed sexist and sexual remarks made about and to her by coworkers and a toxic work environment that did not allow for time off.

Reeve also noted that the company’s public-facing promises were not kept behind closed doors. “The things said by Linus about talking to management, and HR, and promises about how things are handled internally, were a gross misrepresentation of what actually goes on,” she wrote.

Linus Tech Group has committed to hiring a third party to look into those allegations, with Tong telling The Verge “beyond an internal review we will also be hiring an outside investigator to look into the allegations and will commit to publish the findings and implementing any corrective actions that may arise because of this.”

Wordle today: Here’s the answer and hints for August 17

Wordle game displayed on a phone and a laptop screen

It’s Thursday, and with it comes a new Wordle puzzle for you to solve. We’re here for you, as we are every day, with some tips and tricks to help you figure out the answer.

If you just want to be told today’s answer, you can jump to the end of this article for August 17’s Wordle solution revealed. But if you’d rather solve it yourself, keep reading for some clues, tips, and strategies to assist you.

Where did Wordle come from?

Originally created by engineer Josh Wardle as a gift for his partner, Wordle rapidly spread to become an international phenomenon, with thousands of people around the globe playing every day. Alternate Wordle versions created by fans also sprang up, including battle royale Squabble, music identification game Heardle, and variations like Dordle and Quordle that make you guess multiple words at once.

Wordle eventually became so popular that it was purchased by the New York Times, and TikTok creators even livestream themselves playing.

Not the day you’re after? Here’s the Wordle answer for Aug 15.

What’s the best Wordle starting word?

The best Wordle starting word is the one that brings you the most joy. But if you like being strategic in your approach, we have a few ideas to help you pick a word that might help you find the solution faster. One tip is to select a word that includes at least two different vowels, plus some common consonants like S, T, R, or N.

What happened to the Wordle archive?

The entire archive of past Wordle puzzles used to be available for anyone to enjoy whenever they felt like it. Unfortunately, it has since been taken down, with the website’s creator stating it was done at the request of the New York Times.

Is Wordle getting harder?

It might feel like Wordle is getting harder, but it actually isn’t any more difficult than when it first began. You can turn on Wordle‘s Hard Mode if you’re after more of a challenge, though.

Why are there two different Wordle answers some days?

Though usually Wordle will only accept one correct solution per day, occasionally it has rebelled against the norm and deem two different answers acceptable. This is due to changes the New York Times made to Wordle after it acquired the puzzle game.

The Times has since added its own updated word list, so this should happen even less frequently than before. To avoid any confusion, it’s a good idea to refresh your browser before getting stuck into a new puzzle.
