Satellites in space see lava pouring from Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano

TwitterFacebook

From the ground, lava pouring from Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano can look terrifying.

Over the past few weeks, newly cracked fissures in the ground have allowed fountains and pools of molten rocket to well up to the surface, destroying homes and other structures in the area surrounding the active volcano.

The Good

Alexa tells great jokes (for kids) • Voice-driven kids games are entertaining • Works just like a regular Echo Dot

The Bad

Teaching manners not effective for Echo veterans • Value of bundle is questionable

The Bottom Line

Alexa is quite good at catering to an underage audience in the Echo Dot Kids Edition, but since you can enable FreeTime for Alexa on any Echo Dot, there’s not much reason to buy this bundle.

6 minor ‘Game of Thrones’ characters who might be super important in Season 8

TwitterFacebook

In a just world, Season 8 of Game of Thrones would be airing right now, but because large scale television productions “take time to create” especially when the expectations are “earth-shatteringly high,” it’s not. Boo.

However, just because Season 8 isn’t coming out this year doesn’t mean that fans aren’t hungry for sweet, sweet speculation when it comes to the hit show’s anticipated ending. To serve that need, here’s how some of Game of Thrones‘s minor characters might impact the final season.

1. Kinvara

Anyone would be forgiven for forgetting poor Kinvara, the High Priestess of R’hllor who had one scene with Tyrion and Varys in Season 6, but Melisandre’s banishment may bring this fiery lady back with a vengeance. She was introduced as a High Priestess of the Red Temple of Volantis, and her brief conversation with Tyrion showed that the priests of her temple are huge fans of Daenerys. She believes that Daenerys and her dragons were “sent to lead the people against the darkness in this war and in the great war still to come,” which happens to be the war Daenerys is fighting right now. Apple wins $539 million in damages in patent battle with Samsung

TwitterFacebook

Samsung has been ordered to pay Apple Inc. $539 million in damages, following a seven-year clash over patents which ended in a retrial.

As reported by Bloomberg, Apple sought $1 billion in the retrial, an amount it was awarded back in 2012 over several patent infringements relating to the iPhone.

That amount has whittled down as the years have gone by, and Samsung argued that it should only pay $28 million this time around.

The damages were decided by jurors at a federal court in San Jose, California on Thursday, who were figuring out if Samsung should pay damages based on its smartphone sales, or just components that infringed on Apple’s patents. Read more…

Harley-Davidson designed this obscene, $1.8 million motorcycle with a Swiss jeweler

TwitterFacebook

Go big or go extravagant.

That’s the philosophy behind the Harley-Davidson jewel-encrusted motorcycle from Swiss watch maker and jeweler Bucherer. The custom-built Blue Edition bike took 2,500 hours to put together. It’s basically an extreme version of the company’s Blue Edition watch series.

It’s truly almost too much to take in. It has 360 diamonds throughout. It features a diamond ring — a diamond band encircling a 5.40-carat diamond — and watch on display under glass domes. And every screw is plated with rose gold. The cowhide saddle is handmade. On top of all that, the engine compartment lights up in blue. The frame, rims, and gearbox match with an iridescent blue coat of paint. Read more…

But after CNN’s story broke, TransLink put a pause on Freeman’s voice announcements, according to the Vancouver Sun.

Someone put a real engine in a Barbie car and it’s glorious

TwitterFacebook

Barbie’s toy cars were pretty cool for kids, but the mini cars aren’t that much fun. After all, they can only go a whopping 2.5 miles per hour, according to their product specs.

But one group of car enthusiasts took the toy cars to a whole new level.

Grind Hard Plumbing Co, a YouTube channel for building “crazy contraptions and cars” customized a bright pink Barbie Ford Mustang with a 240cc engine from a dirt bike.

The result: an incredibly fast, very dangerous toy. In the video — which includes some gorgeous shots of a lake at sunset — one of the car’s creators, Ethan, nearly spin off the side of a cliff.  Read more…
