Anyone can be the killer on ‘Sharp Objects,’ except the guy they’ll probably arrest

TwitterFacebook

There are only two episodes of Sharp Objects to go and many watchers still don’t have a solid idea on who the Wind Gap killer actually is.

At the end of Episode 6, “Cherry,” the chief of police informs Detective Willis that a worker at the pig farm identified teen weirdo John Keene as the person who dumped a bike belonging to Natalie, the second victim and John Keene’s little sister, into a river of pig feces around the farm…but something about that bicycle and the case against John Keene still seems wrong.

If Keene is arrested in the seventh episode, the Wind Gap authorities will likely have napped the wrong person.  Read more…

How cryptocurrency brings oppression and hope to Venezuela

TwitterFacebook

Daily life in Venezuela begins and ends with one question: What is my money worth today?

Venezuela has the world’s worst inflation rate at more than 40,000 percent annually and rising, according to John’s Hopkins University. The country’s almost worthless bolivar currency is breaking deli scales and credit card readers as the more than 30 million people of Venezuela struggle to buy basic necessities in a starving economy. Citizens are trapped in an ever-worsening cycle of stagnant income and empty store shelves, their money worth less each day. All the while, the authoritarian government of President Nicolás Maduro maintains a tight grip on power through propaganda, strongman tactics, and increasingly desperate economic ploys. Read more…

Farmers are now using literal lasers to scare birds away from their crops

TwitterFacebook

Scarecrows might make for a nice aesthetic, but the latest trend in keeping pests away from crops sounds like something straight out of Star Wars.

Lasers are now the newest trend helping blueberry and raspberry growers in the Pacific Northwest protect their crops from birds this seasonNPR recently published a report on this new technology created by Netherlands-based company Bird Control Group.

SEE ALSO: The ocean is cooking off the Southern California coast. Here’s why.

As strange as it sounds, the owner of a large blueberry farm, Justin Meduri, said he’d tried much crazier things in the past. Last year, he even hired a falconer for the job, which proved to be both expensive and unpredictable. Read more…

Dozens of Vegas slots went offline simultaneously during a hacker convention

TwitterFacebook

The casino is “pretty certain” it wasn’t hacked.

The annual DEF CON hacking convention returned once again to Las Vegas this weekend, and with it came the typical good-natured mischief that’s bound to happen when thousands of cybersecurity professionals congregate in one spot. Early Saturday morning at the Linq casino, however, looked to be something else entirely.

SEE ALSO: The hackers just arrived, and they’re already breaking Vegas

It was around 1:00 or 2:00 a.m. and DEF CON attendee Matt Anderson was hanging out at the Linq — a casino just across the street from Caesars Palace, the convention’s host — when it happened: Dozens of slot machines went down, all at once.  Read more…

Robots ruin the fun of ‘Where’s Waldo?’ with facial recognition

TwitterFacebook

Where do we draw the line with robots? When they become murderous blind dogs? Autonomous Peeping Toms that watch your children? Or movie stars that make us cry over Transformers trailers?

Maybe the final straw is when they start ruining our childhoods, as the There’s Waldo robot seems determined to do.

SEE ALSO: 5 times Boston Dynamics robots scared the hell out of us

Built by the creative ad agency Redpepper, the Google machine learning-driven robot utilizes facial recognition to absolutely dominate the classic, analog hidden image game. And honestly, it’s kind of rude.

In a video that seems to mock the pathetic ineptitude of all humanity, There’s Waldo finds the sneaky bespectacled cartoon man in a whopping 4.5 seconds. When it finishes scanning each face on the page, its silicon hand points to Waldo with an implied attitude of, “You morons.” Read more…

A new protest is organizing to get Alex Jones booted off of Twitter

TwitterFacebook

Alex Jones is still on Twitter, despite the fact that he repeatedly violated the platform’s rules of conduct. But this is 2018, and Twitter users are ready to protest.

Before we go any further, let’s be clear about some terminology: Jones supporters would have you believe that his recent removal from other platforms is an act of censorship and a violation of First Amendment rights. That’s simply untrue.

SEE ALSO: How the dominoes in Alex Jones’ social media empire all fell at once

The First Amendment’s free speech protections apply to all citizens, including the people behind the social media companies that gave him the boot. If these private interests decided they didn’t want Jones peddling his conspiracy theories on their platforms, that’s their right. Read more…

Please enjoy a beautiful snail’s journey to safety, courtesy of Chrissy Teigen

TwitterFacebook

I know Chrissy Teigen is sick of her tweets becoming articles. Understandable. But Chrissy, while I love you, I am not writing this for you. I am writing this for a gorgeous snail.

In an Instagram story that was apparently viewed by 3 million people, Teigen documented a snail’s slow glide across a wooden deck. (Spoiler, in case you don’t like horror films: he made it to the other side.) The snail, with its pleasant chartreuse shell, looked like a little banana pepper, and moved at a slow, fairly steady pace.

Aspirational!

Reader, I was unbelievably transfixed by the snail. When the snail reached safety, I whispered, “Great job.” I briefly understood the appeal of televised sports. I wished the Homeward Bound music was playing. All surefire signs of a good film. Read more…

It’s impossible not to cry over the last song for the ‘Adventure Time’ finale

TwitterFacebook

In the immortal words of BMO: Sometimes life is scary and dark. That is why we must find the light.

After 10 seasons, the Adventure Time finale is upon us. And Rebecca Sugar, one of its Emmy-nominated directors, artists, and composers returned from her work as the creator of Steven Universe to sing her final piece for it.

“Time Adventure” focuses on the time-stopping, everlasting power of friendship — a perfect send off for the show and its tight-knit family. Sugar performed the song at San Diego Comic-Con (now viewable in a newly shared video from Cartoon Network), leaving no dry eyes on stage and in the audience. Read more…
