‘Mortal Kombat 11’ is so much more than just a fighting game

TwitterFacebook

Mortal Kombat tops the very short list of video games that have cemented themselves as permanent staples of pop culture. Whether it’s pro wrestlers, Wreck-It Ralph, Zayn Malik’s Met Gala outfit, or Lil Wayne and Skrillex tracks, its influence far exceeds the confines of a fighting game.

You’d think after nearly three decades, it’d get old. But the hype for Mortal Kombat 11 is still just as fatal.

“We’re all just honored the game’s still going,” said Chris Chapman, who’s been working on the franchise since 1994 and is now director of art at NetherRealm Studios. “I’m honored to see how we’re stitched into culture now.” Read more…

OkCupid review: A fun, hip dating site that’s way less lame than the competition

TwitterFacebook

Let’s just cut the mushy bullshit and get straight to the point: Online dating can truly suck. Don’t get me wrong — the help is seriously great when you start to feel like you’re #ForeverAlone, but the entire process of creating a dating profile and dealing with less than ideal matches can be cumbersome.

You’re forced to answer fake “deep” questions that everyone lies about anyway, deal with creepy dudes and girls who think it’s cute to terrorize your inbox, and navigate sites that just do not have what you’re looking for.

Here’s the thing though: OkCupid is about to be your new best friend.

EliteSingles review: A dating site with curated matches, meant for a more mature crowd

TwitterFacebook

There are a *lot* of online dating options these days, particularly dating apps. They all try to stand out in their own way, whether it be catering to a certain niche or type of person, or offering a special feature or service. But the one thing they all have in common: the promise to up your chances of finding that special someone.

EliteSingles is one of those options that claims to have found the online formula for love, particularly for working professionals looking for real relationships. We’ll see about that.

EliteSingles is pretty easy to operate. The site matches singles mainly based on a personality assessment modeled after the Five Factor Model theory. Based on your personality and other factors (like age, occupation, and location), the site then sets you up with 3-7 compatible matches per day. This means that unlike sites like OkCupid and Match, you can’t peruse the pool for potential love interests but instead have to wait until EliteSingles delivers matches to you. Read more…

The huge ‘Collection #1’ data breach is only a small part of much larger hacker dataset

TwitterFacebook

I guess they wouldn’t have numbered it if it was the only one.

On Jan. 16, security research Troy Hunt uploaded a massive cache of leaked emails and passwords to his invaluable website have i been pwned. The 87GB dataset, dubbed “Collection #1,” was admittedly years old, and had been passed around by hackers for some time now. Still, the sheer scale of it — containing over 772 million email addresses — turned heads. Hold onto your digital butts, because as Krebs on Security reports, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

According to Krebs, the Collection #1 data breach is, unsurprisingly, part of a much larger collection of stolen online credentials being sold online. And, taken as a whole, it dwarfs Collection #1’s size.  Read more…

Elon Musk does the math on another massive tunnel

TwitterFacebook

Could yet another Elon Musk project in Australia have blossomed on Twitter?

Probably not, but he’s quoted $1 billion AUD for it anyway.

The Tesla CEO responded to a tweet from Australian politician Jeremy Buckingham, who reached out to Musk about solving traffic congestion in Sydney with a tunnel possibly similar to the test unveiled by The Boring Company in Los Angeles.

Someone turned Cardi B’s government shutdown rant into a song and it slaps

TwitterFacebook

Honestly, blast this song until the government shutdown ends.

Cardi B’s viral Instagram rant about the government shutdown is a song now, and it’s an absolute banger.

In the original video, which was been retweeted by stans and lawmakers alike, the rapper angrily complains about how ridiculous it is that Trump ordered federal employees to return to work without pay.

“I don’t want to hear y’all motherfuckers talking about ‘Oh, but Obama shut down the government for 17 days’ …” she said. “Yeah, bitch! For healthcare! Our country is in a hellhole right now. All for a fucking wall.”

Then The Gregory Brothers, a group of artists who make “songs out of things that were previously not songs” set it to “Bodak Yellow.”  Read more…

Too lazy to get groceries? This self-driving car will bring a tiny supermarket to you.

TwitterFacebook

We’re delivery obsessed. It’s OK, we can admit it.

Between Amazon Prime, Postmates, Grubhub, Uber Eats, on-campus “snackbots,” and all the self-driving grocery delivery vans bringing us pizza, Walmart orders, and more, you rarely have to go to the store. But an autonomous vehicle company is taking our extreme laziness one step further: bringing the grocery store to our door.

Instead of ordering some carrots, eggs, and almond milk from an app, the San Francisco startup Robomart is bringing Stop & Shop groceries to Boston-area customers. You summon the self-driving vehicle and a selection of grocery items are brought to you. Now you can squeeze every avocado and pick the one that’s just right. Read more…

The 12 best LGBTQ candidates for ‘The Bachelor’

TwitterFacebook

As a queer person, it’s long been my dream to see my community represented in the lowest form of entertainment: The Bachelor.

On Wednesday, comedian Billy Eichner decided to rise to the challenge and offer himself up as fresh meat. “I actually do think it would be cool to do a gay season of The Bachelor,” Eichner wrote, “and hey @BachelorABC, I’m single.”

Eichner’s tweet was met with non-ironic enthusiasm on Twitter. FYI, haters: The LGBTQ community likes trash corporate television like the rest of y’all. Just because it’s heteronormative poison doesn’t mean we’re not on board! We, too, love passing fauxmances and manufactured drama between morons.  Read more…

Netflix just keeps on adding new subscribers

TwitterFacebook

Netflix just keeps on growing.

The streaming media company posted its Q4 earnings for 2018 on Thursday. Netflix shared that it added 29 million paid subscribers for the entirety of the year. That’s 33 percent higher than what the company added the previous year.

In 2017, Netflix added 22 million paid subscribers. This put its total subscriber count at more than 117.5 million. One year later, the service now boasts about 146.5 million subscribers.
