Mortal Kombat tops the very short list of video games that have cemented themselves as permanent staples of pop culture. Whether it’s pro wrestlers, Wreck-It Ralph, Zayn Malik’s Met Gala outfit, or Lil Wayne and Skrillex tracks, its influence far exceeds the confines of a fighting game.

You’d think after nearly three decades, it’d get old. But the hype for Mortal Kombat 11 is still just as fatal.

On Jan. 16, security research Troy Hunt uploaded a massive cache of leaked emails and passwords to his invaluable website have i been pwned. The 87GB dataset, dubbed “Collection #1,” was admittedly years old, and had been passed around by hackers for some time now. Still, the sheer scale of it — containing over 772 million email addresses — turned heads. Hold onto your digital butts, because as Krebs on Security reports, you ain’t seen nothing yet. 

According to Krebs, the Collection #1 data breach is, unsurprisingly, part of a much larger collection of stolen online credentials being sold online. And, taken as a whole, it dwarfs Collection #1’s size.  Read more…

Could yet another Elon Musk project in Australia have blossomed on Twitter? 

Probably not, but he’s quoted $1 billion AUD for it anyway.

The Tesla CEO responded to a tweet from Australian politician Jeremy Buckingham, who reached out to Musk about solving traffic congestion in Sydney with a tunnel possibly similar to the test unveiled by The Boring Company in Los Angeles.

Currently home to several multi-billion-dollar tunnel projects, Sydney is Australia’s most congested city, according to a 2018 report by the National Roads and Motorists’ Association (NRMA). Read more…

Cardi B’s viral Instagram rant about the government shutdown is a song now, and it’s an absolute banger. 

In the original video, which was been retweeted by stans and lawmakers alike, the rapper angrily complains about how ridiculous it is that Trump ordered federal employees to return to work without pay. 

“I don’t want to hear y’all motherfuckers talking about ‘Oh, but Obama shut down the government for 17 days’ …” she said. “Yeah, bitch! For healthcare! Our country is in a hellhole right now. All for a fucking wall.”

But an autonomous vehicle company is taking our extreme laziness one step further: bringing the grocery store to our door. 

Instead of ordering some carrots, eggs, and almond milk from an app, the San Francisco startup Robomart is bringing Stop & Shop groceries to Boston-area customers. You summon the self-driving vehicle and a selection of grocery items are brought to you. Now you can squeeze every avocado and pick the one that’s just right. Read more…

TikTok users are having an eggcellent time. 

Since a photo of a normal, everyday egg broke Kylie Jenner’s world record for the most liked photo on Instagram, the Youths have been obsessed with eggs. 

TikTok users are coming up with eggstraordinarily creative videos in honor of the simple brown egg that broke the internet. 

According to TikTok, videos with the hashtag #EggGang gained 14 million views in just two days — it’s no surprise, considering how much they can crack you up.

As a queer person, it’s long been my dream to see my community represented in the lowest form of entertainment: The Bachelor.

On Wednesday, comedian Billy Eichner decided to rise to the challenge and offer himself up as fresh meat. “I actually do think it would be cool to do a gay season of The Bachelor,” Eichner wrote, “and hey @BachelorABC, I’m single.”

Eichner’s tweet was met with non-ironic enthusiasm on Twitter. FYI, haters: The LGBTQ community likes trash corporate television like the rest of y’all. Netflix just keeps on growing.

The streaming media company posted its Q4 earnings for 2018 on Thursday. Netflix shared that it added 29 million paid subscribers for the entirety of the year. That’s 33 percent higher than what the company added the previous year. 

In 2017, Netflix added 22 million paid subscribers. This put its total subscriber count at more than 117.5 million. One year later, the service now boasts about 146.5 million subscribers.

When broken down for the fourth quarter alone, Netflix blew past its own projections. The company added 8.8 million total paid memberships worldwide. U.S. subscribers accounted for 1.5 million of them. International subscribers made up the other 7.3 million. Netflix previously estimated it would add 7.6 million new subscribers total last quarter.
